BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's drug watchdog has launched a campaign to expose and crack down on illegal spread and selling of drugs on the Internet."Food and drug administration departments at all levels should explore effective methods to stop the sale of fake or inferior-quality drugs, especially those advertised and sold on the Internet," said Shao Mingli, head of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), Tuesday at a meeting.According to SFDA's monitoring on six major search engines including Google and Yahoo, after typing the key words of "medicine" plus a type of common disease, such as "diabetes" or "high blood pressure," 10 to 30 percent of search results contained illegal drug-related information.Figures show that, among 196 web pages being monitored, 96 percent did not have or failed to show certificates for drug-related trades or other services. Some 39 percent have no Internet Content Provider (ICP) records in the database of telecommunication management departments.ICP is a permit to run web sites in China.According to the SFDA, these illegal sites usually advertise or sell drug products in the name of large hospitals or research institutes. Some even forged pages of the SFDA drug database to fool buyers that their drugs had been approved by the administration.The campaign is part of a nationwide crackdown on the violation of intellectual property rights and the production and distribution of fake and shoddy products, which began earlier this month.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its hope that parties in the north and south Sudan will make continuous efforts for a peaceful, free, transparent and just referenda in Sudan in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and called for international efforts to create favorable conditions for the January referenda.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counsellor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was addressing an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."We hope the north and south Sudan will keep up the momentum, speed up the preparation for the referenda and ensure that the referenda are conducted in a peaceful, free, transparent and just manner in accordance with the CPA," Yang said.A referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan is scheduled to be conducted on Jan. 9, 2011, as it was stipulated in the CPA inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, which ended a two-decade civil war between the two sides."We call on the international community to create a favorable condition for the referenda and refrain from prejudging the outcome," he said. "No party should take unilateral action. No matter what outcome of the referenda might be, peace and stability in Sudan and the region must be ensured."Inhabitants of the south will vote on Jan. 9, 2011 on whether to secede from Sudan or remain united with the rest of the country. On the same day, residents of Abyei, located in the center of the country, will vote separately on whether to retain Abyei's special administrative status in the north or become part of Bahr el- Ghazal state in the south.Since the Security Council held the high-level open meeting on Sudan last month, the peace process in Sudan continues to register positive progress, Yang noted."Voter registration for the referenda for southern Sudan has been concluded smoothly, we commend the north and south Sudan, the African Union and the UN Secretariat for the efforts to this end," he said."Maintaining the peace, stability and development in Sudan is in the interest of the Sudanese people, and it is also conducive to the peace and development in the region and in the African continent," Yang said."China hopes that the north and south will cherish the peace that was hard to come by, and continue their equal dialogue and consultation in order to reach an early agreement on the border demarcation, Abyei and wealth sharing and other outstanding issues, " he said. "This is of great significance to the maintenance of the long-term peace and stability in Sudan and the region."

BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Wednesday pledged to cement legislative ties.The pledge came out of talks in Beijing between Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China Wu Bangguo and Chairman of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) Choe Tae Bok.In his opening remarks, Wu said the meeting was his third with Choe this year.The first meeting took place when DPRK leader Kim Jong Il visited China in May. Choe was then a part of Kim's entourage.Wu and Choe then met on the sidelines of an international parliamentary leaders' meeting in Geneva in July."Three meetings in one year reflects our special relationship," Wu said, adding that he expects Choe's visit to boost bilateral relations and ties between the two nations' legislatures.Saying China and DPRK are good neighbors, Wu noted that China-DPRK relations have withstood the tests of changes in the international arena.China-DPRK relations have witnessed significant progress this year, Wu said, citing DPRK leader Kim Jong Il's two visits to China during which Chinese President Hu and Kim reached a number of important agreements.Wu said it is the unswerving principle of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to cement and develop friendly ties with the DPRK.China hopes to work with the DPRK to carry out the consensus of their leaders while maintaining high-level exchanges and stepping up strategic consultation, Wu said.Choe hailed China's remarkable achievements of the reform and opening-up and China's modernization drive, expressing hope the Chinese people will make further progress in building socialism with Chinese characteristics.On legislative ties, Wu said the NPC and the SPA play crucial roles in their countries' politics.The NPC hopes to work closely with the SPA on state governance and legal system building while boosting communication and consultation on international and regional parliamentary organizations, Wu said.Choe began a five-day visit to China Tuesday. BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's urban fixed asset investment rose 24.9 percent in the first 11 months year on year to hit 21.07 trillion yuan (3.19 trillion U.S. dollars), China's statistics authority said Saturday.The growth rate was 0.5 percentage points higher than that during the first ten months, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The urban investment in the primary, secondary and tertiary industries rose by 16.6 percent, 22.7 percent and 26.9 percent respectively.During the first 11 months, investment in central government projects rose 10.2 percent year on year to 1.68 trillion yuan, while investment in local government projects was up 26.4 percent to reach 19.39 trillion yuan, according to the NBS figures.Property development investment was up 36.5 percent year on year to reach 4.27 trillion yuan, the figures showed.During the same period, state-owned and state-controlled investment reached 8.75 trillion yuan, up 19 percent from a year earlier.Investment in railway constructions and transportation jumped 25.3 percent to 582.2 billion yuan, while investment in petroleum and gas exploration climbed 5.8 percent to 219.4 billion yuan for the first 11 months.
