SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego leaders are asking the state to provide guidance on how the city can reopen the convention center safely during the pandemic.Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmember Chris Cate signed on to the letter requesting that Gov. Gavin Newsom provide rules to reopen the convention center, which has been shuttered since March.According to the city, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the convention center has lost out on more than 100 events between March and December of this year. That factors out to a loss of about 7.8 million in direct attendee spending and .2 billion regional impact.Cate says guidelines to safely reopen convention centers have been awaiting Newsom's approval since June, and must be approved by November in order to host events in 2021 — many events that are already in jeopardy."We are respectfully requesting that the Governor approves the Safe Reopening Guidelines for convention centers statewide. These guidelines were submitted to his office in June. When conventions can reopen is just as critical as how they will be allowed to resume, and the state should be proactive in approving these guidelines well in advance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County reported 634 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the highest number of new cases reported over one day thus far.The new cases were out of 9,224 tests reported to the county on Friday — a 7% positive result — and bring the region's COVID-19 case total to 22,489 cases.County health leaders also reported seven more deaths due to the virus on Friday. The victims died between July 7 and July 15 and include three women and four men, whose ages ranged from early 50s to mid-90s. All had existing chronic conditions. The county's death toll is now at 472 deaths.Two new community setting outbreaks were also reported, both traced to restaurants, the county says. The county does not name the businesses that community outbreaks are traced to, officials have previously said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego authorities are investigating a string of robberies involving thieves wielding hammers.San Diego police and sheriff’s department officials confirmed four incidents are being investigated, and they are trying to determine if the robberies are connected.At around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to a Circle K store on Tierrasanta Boulevard due to a robbery carried out by multiple males armed with hammers. It is unknown what the thieves took in the robbery.About an hour later, a man told police that several men with hammers confronted him at a convenience store near Black Mountain Road and ransacked his car before fleeing.Several minutes later, police responded to a 911 call from a driver who reported being flagged down on Maya Linda Road by a man who said he was robbed by a group of people with hammers.A fourth robbery involving a group armed with hammers was reported at a 7-Eleven in Mira Mesa, authorities said.No injuries were reported in any of the incidents, ABC 10News learned.Authorities do not have detailed descriptions of the assailants. 1100
