KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Missouri Health Department is speaking out after it poured bleach on food intended to be given to homeless people.Nellie McCool, who helps run Free Hot Soup Kansas City, has been helping the homeless for years until Sunday."Officers and health inspectors demanded we destroy our food and we were violating health code violations by sharing meals with our friends," said McCool.The department said the group wasn't following the law about serving the homeless."They were notified back in a meeting in September that they needed to get a permit and they just outright said they refused to do that," said Dr. Rex Archer, director of health for KCMO.But McCool said she never heard from the department."That is incorrect," McCool said. "We never had any kind of government official ever come and speak with anybody at any of the public parks."According to the health department, the permit is free and all organizations that want to serve food to homeless people (or anyone) needs this permit. Archer said the food was also not being handled correctly and could put others at risk."Preparing food in all these individuals homes when people haven't been trained, prepare food safely. Then, they are taking it and transporting it in trunks of cars when its cool. It's supposed to be warm food but they have no insulation or a way to keep the food warm," Archer said. 1424

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Schlitterbahn Waterpark co-owner Jeff Henry has been arrested on charges related to the death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab. Henry is charged with murder, 12 counts of aggravated battery and five counts of aggravated child endangerment.Henry was taken into custody in Texas and is currently being held by the U.S. Marshal Service.In a statement Monday afternoon, the company said it was not surprised at the charges against Henry."We as a company and as a family will fight these allegations and have confidence that once the facts are presented it will be clear that what happened on the ride was an unforeseeable accident," the statement read.Last week, several criminal charges were filed against Tyler A. Miles, a former assistant park manager, and the company itself. Those included felony involuntary manslaughter, 12 counts of aggravated battery and five counts of aggravated child endangerment.Schlitterbahn and attorneys for Miles released separate statements saying they intended to fight the charges.  1072

JOHNSON COUNTY, Kansas — Roughly 5,000 mail-in ballots will be tabulated in Johnson County Friday.The results from the mail-in ballots will be released beginning at 8 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m.The ballots could widen the margin between the two leading Republican primary candidates for governor: Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Gov. Jeff Colyer.When polls closed on Tuesday, slow reporting in Johnson County delayed results. Once the numbers came out the following morning, Kobach led by fewer than 200 votes.Since then, the numbers have been contested, but a 41 Action News county-by-county tally shows Kobach still in the lead.The Secretary of State’s office said it should have all the advance ballots that were mailed in, and any other unofficial election results that were not previously reported on election day.Provisional ballots will be reviewed and counted next week by individual counties. They must certify the results between Monday, Aug. 13 and Monday, Aug. 20.Colyer has asked Kobach to recuse himself from giving local election officials advice. 1081

JULIAN, Calif. (KGTV) -- The threat of wildfires in Julian may be going down. SDG&E is installing underground power lines to help mitigate the fire risk. The project is also expected to keep critical facilities open during pre-emptive power outages. Not only will the work help prevent fires, it may also help keep power running when Santa Ana winds start picking up. Crews were hard at work Tuesday putting underground power lines near State Route 78 in Julian. RELATED: City of San Diego moves forward with undergrounding more power linesThe project is part of SDG&E’s effort to reduce the risk of wildfires and shutting down power during windy weather. It will help keep the power running to places like Julian’s schools, post office, library and their Cal Fire station. Phase one of the project is being done along Cape Horn Avenue. Many homes and facilities have lost power there during shutoffs in the past. While residents in Julian were happy about the changes, they know it won’t happen overnight. KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The oldest living U.S. Marine celebrated her 107th birthday over the weekend.The U.S. Marine Corps wished Sgt. Dorothy “Dot” Cole a happy birthday in a special video posted on Facebook on Saturday.The USMC says Cole was born on Sept. 19, 1913 in Warren, Pennsylvania, and enlisted in the Marine Corps after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.“Everyone was out doing something, the women helping The Red Cross or even in churches, they were knitting things, so I decided that I wanted to do something and I would go into the Marine Corps,” said Cole in the video.Cole was part of a female integration into what were considered male-dominated career fields within the Marine Corps during World War II, according to the USMC. That allowed the Marines to free up personnel to fight the war in the Pacific.Cole now lives in Kannapolis, North Carolina, according to the city.Happy 107th Birthday to Dot Cole! Sgt.
