BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke said here Monday clean energy technology is one of the most beneficial areas for U.S.-China cooperation and also the only way for the two countries to keep sustained economic growth and combat global climate change. Locke, who accompanied U.S. President Barack Obama's visit to China, made the remarks at the Sino-U.S. clean energy round table conference held here Monday. It has been Locke's third trip to China since becoming Commerce Secretary in March. "The United States and China have the power and indeed an obligation to alter history for the benefit of all people on the planet," he said. As the world's most productive and innovative economies, the U.S. and China are uniquely positioned to create the solar, wind, biofuel and renewable technologies that the world wants and needs, Locke said. "We can do it by making clean energy the prime engine of the economic growth in the 21st century," he said. Locke said he plans to lead an energy and trade mission to China next March, which would include U.S. firms from new energy technology sectors and make stops in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities. U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu also attended the conference, who expressed optimism about U.S.-China cooperation in the deployment and development of clean energy technology. The conference was co-hosted by China's State Energy Bureau, U.S. Department of Commerce and Department of Energy, in a bid to advance mutual pragmatic cooperation in clean energy and promote the development of clean energy technology and industry.
LIMA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin met with the president of Peru's Congress, Luis Alva, here on Monday to discuss bilateral ties. Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said China views Peru, one of the first Latin American nations that recognized the People's Republic of China, as a good friend and partner in the region. Jia said China and Peru have set up a strategic partnership, signed a free trade agreement, enhanced political mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation and carried out fruitful cultural exchanges. The two countries have also coordinated closely on international and regional issues, he added. China and Peru are facing the common task of boosting economic growth and improving people's living standards, Jia said, noting that deepening their friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation serves the fundamental interests of both countries. Luis Alva (R), president of the Congress of Peru, meets with Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, in Lima, capital of Peru, Nov. 23, 2009Jia proposed that the two countries should further enhance political mutual trust, expand pragmatic cooperation and boost exchanges between political parties, parliaments, local governments, media organizations and non-governmental groups. He appreciated the efforts by Peruvian legislators in promoting bilateral ties. The Peruvian Congress passed two bills to express condolences to the Chinese people following the devastating earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan province last year, and it recently passed another bill to extend congratulations on the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, he said. "All of these demonstrated the deep friendship between China and Peru, and we appreciate that very much," Jia said. Alva thanked China for its support to Peru and spoke highly of China's contributions to the world, saying the sound, close relationship between the two nations has benefited the two peoples. Peru hopes to strengthen its cooperation with China in the high-tech sector and welcomes investment by Chinese companies in the country, he said. CHENGDU, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China will send two giant pandas to Australia Friday for a cooperative research program. The four-year-old male panda "Wang Wang" and three-year-old female panda "Fu Ni" will stay in Australia for 10 years, said Zhang Hemin, chief of the Wolong Nature Reserve Administration in southwest China's Sichuan Province. "Wang Wang", which means "net" in Chinese, is 119 kg and "Fu Ni", which means "lucky girl", is 90 kg. They were quarantined on Oct. 21 for their trip to Australia. "Wang Wang" and "Fu Ni" were transferred to the Bifengxia Giant Panda Breeding Center in Ya'an City after the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center where they were living were destroyed in the May 12 massive earthquake in 2008. The Australian side had sent veterinaries and feeders of the two pandas to China for training. It had also set up a 10 hectares bamboo planting base, Zhang said. The two pandas will receive a body check Tuesday before their departure. China and Australia made an agreement in 2007 on the cooperative research. Giant pandas, known for being sexually inactive, are among the world's most endangered animals due to shrinking habitat. There are about 1,590 pandas living in China's wild, mostly in Sichuan and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu.
BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Beijing saw smooth flow of traffic Monday, the first workday of 2010, after a snow storm Sunday caused traffic breakdown in the national capital. The city's bus and subway services went smoothly on Monday, with no gridlock and serious traffic accidents reported, according to the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau. During the peak hours on Monday morning, the Beijing Subway Operating Company dispatched 20 additional subway trains to ease the passenger flow. The early bus of all routes started off on time in the morning, according to the Beijing Public Transport Holdings. Most of the bus services ran smoothly, while only 19 lines leading suburban mountainous areas were suspended, it said. From 9:00 p.m. Saturday to 8:00 a.m. Monday, more than 20,000 sanitation workers were dispatched to clean the snow in the city's main roads with 15,710 tonnes of snow-dissolving agent, said Zhang Zhiqiang, an official with the Beijing Environmental Sanitation Group Co., Ltd. By 9:00 a.m., all expressways in Beijing reopened to traffic, while some national and municipal highways were shut down due to the slippery road conditions. The vehicle flow in Beijing was reduced Monday after authorities announced on Sunday that classes in primary and middle schools would be suspended on Monday, and urged institutions and companies to stagger their work time. However, transportation in eastern Shandong Province and northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was seriously affected by the heavy snow. By 9:30 a.m. Monday, many expressways in Shangdong were closed and 19 flights cancelled in the Yantai International Airport. In Inner Mongolia, 13 trains were delayed Monday in Hohhot, the regional capital, said the Hohhot railway authorities. The No. 1820 train, carrying more than 800 passengers, started off at 5:10 p.m. after being stranded for 12 hours, they said.
