SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police officers babysat for a man who needed to go to the hospital Friday night but didn't have anyone to watch his two young daughters. According to the department, officers received a radio call from a young father living in the Alpha apartments. The man reportedly told authorities he was in need of hospital care. “Unfortunately, he had no family or friends to help watch the girls,” the department said. After the man was taken to the hospital, two officers stayed behind to watch the 2-year-old and 4-year-old before taking them to the hospital where they were reunited with their dad.“Dad was emotional and grateful for the support. If someone needs help, we'll be there to respond,” the department continued in the Facebook post.No emergency is too small for our officers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that the San Diego Padres will oversee the creation of an all-new, mixed-use district outside of Petco Park.Moving forward with plans to revitalize the neighborhood adjacent to the downtown ballpark, Faulconer announced the winning proposal to transform the space in the East Village known as Tailgate Park into the East Village Quarter -- a project consisting of retail, housing, open space, parking, and more, with the Padres as a partner. The area is bordered by 12th and Imperial avenues and K and 14th streets. The City of San Diego has owned the four blocks since the ballpark district was developed.Last December, the city formalized its intent to sell or lease the space, and on Wednesday, Faulconer said the Padres came up with the best proposal to revitalize the area. The city also held a virtual open house to get public input on the top two proposals and the community’s priorities for the development.Padres President Erik Gruepner said they want the space to embody the “live, work, play” vision of the East Village, so much of which is already influenced by the team’s presence.Gruepner spoke about holding neighborhood festivals and farmers markets to help create a feeling of community, turning a parking lot into a neighborhood. When it comes to parking, the Padres plan to add 600 more spaces than what currently exists in a multi-level structure. The cost for the project is expected to exceed billion. The proposal will go to the City Council for a review and vote, and if approved, the goal is to have a final plan in place by next year. 1637

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego coffee drinkers plenty to be buzzed about with the local java scene.Recently, Mostra Coffee in Carmel Mountain was named Micro Coffee Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine. The company, led by Filipino-American friends Jelynn Malone, Beverly Magtanong, Sam Magtanong, and Mike Arquines, has operated in San Diego since 2013 and gained a reputation for their creative drinks."We dreamt up this company and wanted our Filipino culture to be a part of it, but we didn't know anything about coffee or where to begin to source Philippine coffee," said Malone. "All we had was a dream to give back and help people."RELATED: San Diego coffee houses to grab a cup of coffeeWhile Mostra's efforts are finding national acclaim, it's become part of the local trend in coffee that's starting to turn heads."Seven-10 years ago the San Diego coffee scene was simple with only a handful of coffee roasters in town that roasted good, solid coffee," said Arquines. "Traditional lattes, cappuccinos and a sprinkle of a few manual pour over methods. Maybe even a few shops carried something called 'cold brew' ... if you were lucky of course. Much simpler times."Today, the scene is brewing some delicious offerings.RELATED: City Heights coffee shop owner brings community closer to nature, one another"Fast forward to 2019. You now have more than a couple dozen talented roasters (with 2-3 opening every couple months), each with a varying range of eclectic menu offerings, roast styles and gorgeous interiors worthy of any [Instagram] post or lifestyle blog," Arquines added.Mraz Family Farms grew the first geisha coffee bean in San Diego recently, putting America's Finest City on the coffee growing map. The farm, developed by Grammy-winning musician Jason Mraz, grows about 2,800 coffee trees with several other varieties. The farm partnered with Frinj Coffee to offer the beans. Frinj CEO Jay Ruskey says Southern California is ripe to become a powerhouse for coffee growers.RELATED: San Diego businesses put the planet ahead of profits to go green“We would love to see another 50,000 coffee plants here in Southern California this year, and expand to millions in the next ten years,” Ruskey told 10News back in March. “I see a rapid expansion I think it's going to be huge [in San Diego]."The rare coffee is generally grown in Panama, but made its way into Bird Rock Coffee Roasters — which was Roast Magazine's 2009 and 2012 Roaster of the Year.Jeff Taylor, with Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, says it's not the quantity of roasters in San Diego but the quality that is putting the region on the map."Beginning with craft beer, wines and now coffees. Taste makers and brew masters get the craft of what we are doing," Taylor said. "It's not so much the number of roasters, but the quality of roasters in the market."RELATED: Coffee grown in San Diego? Local farm preps for first-ever harvestTo put it in enthusiasts terms, he says coffee is treated similar to California wines."We share flavor notes and coffee like wine ranges in price from low to high. You can find anything you are looking for," Taylor said. "And I believe since we were early adapters to the 'direct trade movement,' or sourcing at coffee origins and relationship coffee, we resonate with those that were interested in transparency, fair wages for farmers, and sustainability."The number of coffee houses around San Diego advertises just how strong the market is for something new and flavorful that tabs into those passionate drinkers."San Diego is becoming one of the most exciting and forward thinking, progressive coffee destinations in the nation," Arquines says. "Exciting times!" 3680

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Real estate company Zillow launched a new service in San Diego Monday that gives homeowners another option for selling their property. The service, called Zillow Offers, will present a cash offer to homeowners who want to sell their home as-is, without the need for open houses or renovations. This is the second market in California that Zillow has offered the service. In the last quarter, Zillow charged an average fee of 7.5% on transactions in the cities it currently operates.“Are they going to get top dollar? No, they are not,” said Mark Goldman, a loan officer and a former real estate professor. On the flip side, Goldman realizes the advantage comes in the form of convenience.“What they are getting is turning the house into cash very quickly and with the least amount of hassle,” said Goldman. In San Diego, realtor Kyle Whissel will be working with Zillow on the ground to act as Zillow’s buying agent as well as their selling agent once the home is market-ready.“We’ll give [Zillow] our opinion of value, they’ll punch that into their algorithm and that will spit it out a price to the homeowner,” Whissel said. The homeowner will then decide if they want to sell at that price, after which they can set a close date within as little as 5 days.“Zillows goal is to come in at market value, make a little bit of improvements, similar to improvements someone would make to put their home on the market,” said Whissel. “Once those are made, we’ll put it back on market at the new market value.” 1527

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County avoided being on the state's monitoring list for the third consecutive day on Friday, which should allow the county to be removed from the list.Friday, the county reported a calculated case rate of 96.3, below the state's threshold of 100 coronavirus cases per 100,000 people over 14 days. Despite this, the county said Friday, "the state said today that it will review its data before removing San Diego County from the list."San Diego County has remained within the necessary thresholds of California's other five monitoring metrics:The county could be placed back on the list if it posts three straight days over the state thresholds once again. If or when the county is removed from the list, officials say the region shouldn't expect an immediate return to normal. California is not planning on issuing any further business reopening guidance and county officials have said that no new business sectors are scheduled to reopen if the county gets off the list."The goal of our exercise is not to get off the state's monitoring list and get our case count below that, the goal is to have it remain below that," Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Thursday. "And we have to avoid the temptation or mindset that if tomorrow's numbers are under 100 that somehow we feel like we've made it, that we're done, we can go back to normal ... we want to avoid the seesaw of up and down, opened or closed."But part of the uncertainty is the state hasn't clearly outlined what happens after a county falls off the watch list. Mayor Kevin Faulconer sent a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom requesting guidance on how counties proceed after they fulfill the requirements to get off the list."No process currently exists for restarting other activities, such as gyms and fitness centers, places of worship, non-essential office workplaces, personal care services, barber shops and salons, shopping malls, and higher education, all of which have been restricted to outdoor operations," Faulconer's letter read. "The lack of a consistent process for these businesses, with logical, data-driven triggers, exacerbates an increasingly difficult economic situation, and undermines the credibility of and compliance with the State's public health order."Schools, however, would be the next sector to see some sort of reopening. In-person classes at schools 7th- through 12th-grade can resume after San Diego County stays off the state watch list for another 14 consecutive days — depending on school district plans. This could mean students are able to return to the classroom before the end of the month. So far, 56 local elementary schools have also filed waivers with the county to return to classrooms early.Last month, California released guidance on how schools can resume in-person this fall if approved, including measures regarding face coverings, physical and distance learning requirements, testing needs and contact tracing, and physical distancing. Those guidelines also included when schools would be required to go back to distance learning:Schools should consult public health officer first if a classroom needs to go home because of a positive caseA classroom goes to distance learning if there is a confirmed caseA school goes to distance learning if multiple classrooms have cases or more than 5% of a school is positiveA district goes to distance learning if 25% of a district's schools are closed within two weeksSchools that have already reopened for in-person instruction would not be required to close again if the county is placed back on the watch list. That decision will be made on a school by school basis.Friday, the county reported 406 new coronavirus cases out of 9,508 reported tests, bringing the region's total to 34,065 cases, and seven new deaths. There have also been four new community outbreaks in the county: two in businesses, one in a restaurant-bar, and one in a food processing setting. The county is currently at 24 community outbreaks in the last seven days — far beyond the trigger of seven outbreaks in seven days. 4074
