EMERSON, Iowa — While many in Southwest Iowa saw the strongest of Friday's thunderstorm, one Emerson couple watched a funnel cloud spin from the cloud outside their home.Larry and Marlene Skalberg, who live right just east of Emerson, have lived in their house for 39 years. They've experienced storms throughout the years but never saw one up close like Friday's storm that created a funnel cloud right outside their front door. "It was just neat to watch it and how it formed and then how it started to get smaller and then it just disappeared," said Marlene. Marlene said she got an alert on her phone about a tornado warning that advised people in the area to take cover, as northeastern Mills County was under tornado warning for part of the afternoon. She started heading towards the basement, but her husband Larry grabbed a chair, a beer and headed for the front lawn."He was like, 'look! A tornado! Go out on the lawn and take pictures!' So there I am out on the lawn just taking pictures and I'm like, 'what if the tail just comes down and takes?' " said Marlene.Larry wasn't worried. He said he enjoys watching storms brew and has experienced several tornadoes in Iowa, Oklahoma and Kansas. "I like to watch storms coming in and the clouds forming. I always have since I was a little kid," said Larry. "I enjoy storms. But if the funnel cloud had touched the hill...well that's a different story." 1436

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Surveillance video shows a thief going shopping overnight at a trailer company in Escondido."It's heartbreaking," said Alea Barreto, manager at Norco Trailers.Barreto says on Saturday night, video shows a pickup truck parked outside their fence. Nearby, a man appears to be scoping things out. The next night, just before midnight, he's back. He retrieves something from the truck and uses it to cut a hole in the fence. Once that happens, he backs his truck through the hole and onto the property, before he begins hauling away trailers. On the video, a man in a hoodie is seen browsing the lot. He hitches a landscaping trailer, but before he can get it out, the trailer becomes detached. He attaches it and drives off."Every time I watch it, it's more painful," said Barreto. The pain is felt over and over. Not long after the truck is seen leaving, the truck is back and hauling away another trailer. Within a few hours, four trailers are stolen. Three of the thefts are caught on video. The total loss is about ,000. The company is insured, but a possible hike in insurance rates is not worth it. They've decided to eat the cost. The business is a family-owned shop. "Just trying to put food on the family table, and nope, someone else feels like they deserve it instead," said Barreto. The truck is believed to be a silver GMC or Chevy pickup. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- Firefighters have stopped the forward rate of spread after a fire, dubbed the Fallsbrea Fire, sparked in Fallbrook Sunday afternoon. “Too many times, man” Chris Beucler sighed. He could not believe he was witnessing yet another wildfire approaching his home. "I looked out the window, and just beyond our lots down here I see a huge flame up in the air,” Beucler said. Early Sunday afternoon, Beucler and his wife were putting up artwork in his home, when the flickers brought back memories. It seemed like just yesterday, he experienced the Lilac Fire, which destroyed many of his neighbor's houses. The Lilac Fire started on December 7, 2017. The 4,100-acre blaze destroyed 157 and damaged 64 structures. "I've been up here 16 years, and this is probably the sixth time these things have happened. So it's just high alert all the time,” Beucler said. Cal Fire and North County Fire responded to the scene of the Fallbrea fire that sparked near Highway 76 and Ramona Drive around 12:30 p.m. When they arrived, the fire was only about a half-acre. But it quickly spread up the slope to about five acres. While the region is under a Red Flag warning, flames spread before gusts took over North County, Cal Fire said. "Make no mistake about it, while we are expecting a red flag condition to take hold of the county, we are not under those conditions as we speak,” Cal Fire San Diego Captain, Issac Sanchez said. “This was absolutely slope and fuel driven. Mostly burning in grass, which burns very quickly and very hot.”Firefighters are expecting conditions to worsen and to work overtime. But for now, veteran wildfire survivor Beucler is relieved. The walking trail that he created six years ago and preps twice a year saved his home once again. "We got a natural firebreak that we built for a trail to go around our house, and they're saying that's what saved our part,” Beucler said. According to Cal Fire, several structures were threatened, but the forward rate of spread has been stopped. The fire was 100 percent contained by about 4 p.m. The cause is under investigation.  2216

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (CNS) - Nearly three-dozen cats were taken in by the San Diego Humane Society after they were left behind inside a condominium in Escondido last month, the agency announced Wednesday. The property manager of a condominium complex in the 1000 block of East Washington Avenue called the group on Oct. 22 to report that one of the condo's tenants had abandoned the cats after being evicted, according to the SDHS.Officers from the SDHS' law enforcement division responded to the home and found 31 cats living in "unsanitary conditions" inside the unit, SDHS spokeswoman Nina Thompson said. The cats were taken to SDHS campuses in Escondido and Oceanside for extensive medical exams, Thompson said. One cat had to be euthanized and a majority of the cats were found to be suffering from numerous medical conditions, including upper respiratory infections, diarrhea, ear infections and heart murmurs. The remaining 30 cats underwent more than three weeks of intensive medical care and were in the process of being transferred to SDHS' rescue partner Love Your Feral Felines for recovery, Thompson said. The Humane Society encourages the public to report animal emergencies, cruelty or neglect by calling 619-299-7012. 1234
