The endless hum of the hive calls to Chuck Pressler. Each day, he visits the thousands of bees living in his backyard. It’s an appointment he hasn’t missed in years.“It slows you down,” said Pressler.The Navy veteran served four years during the Cold War. Pressler worked in a submarine unit, and now, he works as an EMT. He’s been called to help others in both his careers, but both have come with a price.“It is a sacrifice,” said Pressler. “Whether it's coming back from war, or whether it's dealing with things at home: police, paramedics, firemen, EMT, dispatchers. There is a lot of things that weigh on people after dealing with this for so long. There are humans behind these shields in uniform.”But Pressler found a unique way to take his mind away from the stress: tending several beehives in his backyard and harvesting the honey they produce.“You find yourself talking to them a little bit, and you forget about everything around you while you're doing it, and you're just paying attention to the bees,” said Pressler.He knew the calm he found had to be shared. “From my own experience of how I enjoy it, I discovered that it could be a tool, an actual tool for those that have either experienced PTSD, or just something to take them from their past experiences or their current everyday job.”Pressler started the non-profit Honeybees for Heroes to give other veterans and first responders a chance to ease the traumas they live with every day.“You know it's a brotherhood, sisterhood. It’s all a big family in the end, and everybody sticks together, and I think being around each other and talking, even in general, and dealing with honeybees is, is working towards getting past it,” said Pressler.For so many veterans, talking about mental health and PTSD can be a tough thing to do. That’s why coming out here and focusing on the honeybees can be so healing.“Generally, we don't talk about it unless they bring it up. I try not to revisit any ghosts or bring up any memories. The object is just to let them find their pace.”Pressler now works with a handful of veterans in his own neighborhood one-on-one, even setting them up with their own hives.He says many veterans feel misunderstood and alone, and he wants to be there to help.“Let's be honest, there is a stigma behind it, and people start to look at you like, you know, you're crazy. It's important for the community to know, on a bigger broad scale, that it's OK to deal with these issues and that the people that do these jobs are human and that it requires a human to make these sacrifices to do it,” said Pressler.Pressler said the call to serve is worth every sacrifice, and it’s a mission that doesn’t end when you leave the military.“All of us first responders, veterans all that, that's what we do. We help protect people,” he said.He hopes more will soon realize: fulfilling that promise can come from the most unexpected places.“When you have a beehive with 60,000 honeybees in it, you're their guardian,” said Pressler. “I always say I'm the keeper of the bees or the protector of the bees, but we are their guardian. The CDC is recommending restaurants, cafes and places where people eat and drink, and likely are not wearing a mask while they do so, should consider all efforts to limit possible COVID-19 exposure and community spread, following the publication of a study looking at where coronavirus patients visited.Adults in the study with positive COVID-19 test results were "twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant than those with negative test results", according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The study looked at people who had coronavirus symptoms and sought testing and care from 11 health care facilities around the country. It found two situations were connected to a higher rate of positive COVID-19 test results compared to negative results; going to locations offering on-site eating and drinking options, and having close contact with persons known to have COVID-19.“Exposures and activities where mask use and social distancing are difficult to maintain, including going to places that offer on-site eating or drinking, might be important risk factors for acquiring COVID-19. As communities reopen, efforts to reduce possible exposures at locations that offer on-site eating and drinking options should be considered to protect customers, employees, and communities,” the study states.CDC personnel conducted interviews with more than 300 study participants, asking them about their mask-wearing habits, attending community gatherings, and activities in the last two weeks; including going to an office, salon, gym, bar/coffee shop, church, eating at a restaurant, or using public transportation. Participants answered using a five-point scale to indicate how often they did these activities.“Reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation. Direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance. Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use,” the report says.The responses indicated around 42 percent of those who had positive COVID-19 test results had close contact with one or more people with known positive cases. The majority of those “close contacts” were family members. Only 14 percent of those who had symptoms but had negative COVID-19 test results reported having close contact with a person known to have the virus.The CDC recommends that if a family member or member of a household becomes sick and it is possibly COVID-19, additional prevention measures should be taken. This includes isolating the sick person as much as possible in the home, reducing shared meals and common spaces, wearing gloves and masks inside the home, and cleaning and disinfecting the home often.The study was completed during July and the results were released September 10. 2952

The coronavirus pandemic and the renewed focus on systemic economic inequality in our country are bringing new attention and support to community-based nonprofit lenders.Community development financial institutions, or CDFIs, focus on rural, low-income and minority communities.Around 300 CDFIs made more than billion in Paycheck Protection Program loans to help small businesses, many of which had been left out previously.By comparison, JPMorgan Chase, which is nine times the size of the entire CDFI industry, made only four times the amount of PPP loans.“Many CDFIs we are in many ways like small businesses, we didn't come into this situation strong in terms of our capital,” said Luz Urrutia, CEO of Opportunity Fund. “Now more than ever, during the rebuilding, we've got to have the balance sheet strength because we are supporting these low-income communities, small businesses and communities of color.”Opportunity Fund is one of those CDFIs. It's been raising millions of dollars since March, specifically to help minority, immigrant and women-owned businesses.Serena Williams and MacKenzie Scott have both donated recently. But there are questions about how long all the support these nonprofit lenders have been getting will last.“What I would say for the minority-owned businesses right now, timing is perfect and when timing is perfect, you need to strike while the iron is hot,” said Maurice Brewster, CEO of Mosaic Global Transportation. “And right now, there's a lot of support, a lot of ground swelling with dealing with small and minority-owned businesses.”Maurice Brewster’s business received loan payment deferral from Opportunity Fund during the pandemic.
