BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- China strongly opposes a declaration issued by the European Union on a Chinese human rights case, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here Sunday.Qin made the remarks in response to a question on China's attitude towards the EU declaration.The EU said in its declaration that it regrets the decision of the higher people's court of Sichuan Province to confirm the sentence of Tan Zuoren to five years in prison for "subversion of state power."It also appeals to the Chinese government to release Tan unconditionally.Tan Zuoren, a former magazine editor, was sentenced in February on the charge of inciting subversion of state power. This week, the Sichuan provincial higher people's court upheld Tan's five-year prison term.Qin said, China's justice department handled the case independently according to the Chinese law.The EU declaration has interfered in China's judicial affairs," Qin said. "China firmly opposes and is strongly dissatisfied over it."Qin hoped the EU would respect China's judicial sovereignty and safeguard the overall situation of Sino-EU relations.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 19 (Xinhua)-- More than 1,700 mudslide evacuees presently residing at schools in Zhouqu county of northwest China's Gansu Province are to be relocated as students will start the new semester soon, local authorities said Thursday.More than 400 households, altogether over 1,700 people, will be moved to Shachuan Village, in western of the mudslides-leveled county, said Yang Jianguo, head of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.The people are now living in dormitories and classrooms of three local schools, namely No.1 High School, No.1 Junior High and No. 3 Junior High. With students coming back from their summer vacation, the schools could no longer be used as settlement areas.More than one thousand tents will be erected at the new settlement zone covering an area of 67 mu (4.5 hectares), with three tents for each family, said Yang."They probably will have to spend the winter there so winter tents will be used," said Yang.The devastating mudslides which hit on Aug. 8 have claimed 1,364 lives with 401 people still missing as of 4 p.m. Thursday.Work crews will level the ground, ensure water and electricity supply and build lavatories from Aug. 21 to 23. They will start setting up tents on Aug. 24, said Yang.The new semester for junior school students and pupils will begin on Aug. 25 and senior high students will be transferred to other cities in the province, and start the new semester in early September.

BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Public Security has vowed to crack down on domestic and foreign online gambling organizations as a number of football gambling web sites were discovered online following the start of the World Cup in South Africa."Currently, police departments at all levels should focus on the World Cup and keep close watch on domestic and foreign online gambling groups. Dig deep for the violators behind them, seize evidence and give a hard blow to online football gambling," urged vice minister Huang Ming at a meeting Tuesday.Figures from the ministry show that Chinese police shut down 1,461 foreign gambling web sites in less than one week after the start of the 2010 World Cup."Gambling, drugs and prostitution are still rampant in some areas, causing civilians to issue strong complaints... NANNING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Six people were killed and eleven others injured in an explosion at an illegal private firecracker factory in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local police said Sunday.The blast hit the factory in a village in Lingshan County, Qinzhou City at about 6 p.m. Sunday, the police said. The cause of the explosion is being investigated.Two people were killed on the spot while four injured died in the hospital after treatments failed.Police said they have arrested a suspect surnamed Lao.Authorities have ordered a city-wide crackdown on unlicensed firecracker factories following the incident.
