SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When the pandemic forced San Diego's breweries to close, many turned to canning in order to continue selling their brews.Virginia Morrison, CEO and co-founder of Second Chance Beer Company, told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena canned beers is now the majority of their revenue."For us, that's really our only revenue stream now," Morrison said, adding that there was already a shift in popularity from glass to cans. "We've been putting out more cans since COVID than we've ever done before. We used to have maybe three or four releases, now I think at one point we had 14 cause that's all we can do. Every bit of beer we're making we're putting in cans."Now, the aluminum supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Morrison said a couple of weeks ago, the Brewers Association warned members of an aluminum can shortage.Morrison said the manufacturers her brewery works with are still able to fulfill orders, but she's unsure for how much longer."We need to know and plan and also work with them really closely to figure out how to minimally impact both our businesses," said Morrison. The Aluminum Association said in a statement, "The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally-friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."But according to the Can Manufacturer's Institute, aluminum isn't in short supply, but can makers are struggling to keep up with the demand. To make matters worse for Second Chance and other local companies, they're competing for the same supply big beverage makers use. Leading Morrison to believe that at a certain point, one of their last viable options for making money during the pandemic will disappear."I'm afraid that there are some breweries that won't make it just because of this," Morrison said. 1851

San Diego (KGTV)- Another section of the bluff has collapsed in Encinitas. This comes almost exactly one year after the deadly collapse that killed three women on the beach.Large mounds of rock sit at the foot of the cliffs on Stonesteps Beach, in Encinitas, after the bluffs gave way early Sunday morning. Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles tells ABC 10News the collapse stretches 40 feet along the beach. The block failure sits just over a mile and a half from Grandview Beach in Encinitas. Julie Davis, her daughter Annie Clave and sister Elizabeth Charles were tragically killed at the site a year ago after the bluffs came crashing down.10News spoke with Davis' husband, Dr. Pat Davis, last week on the anniversary of the collapse. He says more needs to be done to keep Encinitas beach-goers safe."There's very few new signs warning people about these cliffs," says Davis. "There's very little coordination by the lifeguard service to warn people about how dangerous these cliffs are."Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles says no one was hurt in this weekend's collapse. The block failure was caused by natural erosion.Giles says there is a small area on the cliff that is still causing some concern. Lifeguards and the City of Encinitas are monitoring the area.Dr. Pat Davis says that as his family mourns the loss of their loved ones, he can't help but think about beach-goers."I think we're looking at a situation where what happened to my family could easily happen again."Davis has been working with local and state leaders to stabilize the bluffs. He hopes a new bill will help. It offers solutions like sand replenishment. That bill is currently moving through the state Senate. 1685

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Whether you're into cars, fashion, history, or current events, you could find it in a magazine at Paras News. Now the beloved North Park newsstand is closing down after 70 years."For a lot of people, they're here every day. It's their mainstay," said Ken Gabbara, owner of Paras News for the last 11 years. Health concerns are just one of the reasons he's letting the iconic shop go. RELATED: Several popular San Diego restaurants to close after CEO accused in 0 million fraud scheme"The Internet has worn us down because they're bigger and stronger than us. You can't compete with something they give away for free for the most part," said Gabbara. At one time, they sold over 4,000 types of magazines, but with less published nowadays, that number dropped to 2,500.Longtime customers are sad to see the neighborhood establishment go. "It's going to be missed, it's really going to be missed," said Sharon Maynard, a customer of 35 years.Maynard fell in love with the literary and poetry magazines. "Now they just go online, but for me, there's nothing better than having it in your hand in print," said Maynard. Also sad to see the newsstand go is manager Kent Snyder, who's worked at Paras for 33 years. RELATED: Restaurant closures highlight industry struggles in San Diego"We made an effort to bring stuff into the store that other places don't carry, when they asked for it I ordered it," Snyder.Employees invite the community to buy one more magazine, so they have something of Paras News to hold onto. "We're one of a kind," said Gabbara. Paras News will remain open until the end of December. 1630
