Florida is known by many for its beaches. But in politics, it sometimes is known for being the butt of a joke. With many counties in Florida reporting record number of vote-by-mail requests, some are wondering will more controversy emerge in 2020? Tuesday's primary may provide clues. TUESDAY'S PRIMARYWhile Tuesday's primary does not involve presidential politics in Florida, a number of races impacting the state legislature, Congress and local governments are taking place. HISTORY OF ISSUESFlorida's issues with elections goes all the way back to 1876. The presidential election was still undecided with Florida being unsure how to award its 4 Electoral College votes. Florida wasn't alone. South Carolina and Louisiana were also unsure. As a result, Congress had to step in and resolve the issue with Rutherford B. Hayes eventually becoming President. Most Americans know Florida because of the issues in 2000. With another presidential election hanging in the balance, Al Gore and George W. Bush battled for votes during a 36-day recount. Palm Beach County's butterfly ballot, with confusing placement of names for some voters, likely resulted in 2,800 votes for Pat Buchanan instead of Gore. "Hanging Chads" in the state became a household phrase nationwide to describe ballots with paper fragments still hanging from them. Ballots that year were hole punch style for many voters. Like in 2000 and 2016, Florida has long been an important state for nominees to win. It has helped choose the winning presidential candidate every election since 1992.RECENT ISSUESIssues in Florida's Elections have continued in recent years. In Broward County, nearly 1,000 uncounted ballots were found in a warehouse in 2012. In 2018, 22 ballots were counted that were supposed to be rejected. Former "The Price is Right" host Bob Barker, 94, was hospitalized on Monday with non-life threatening injuries, Hollywood Reporter confirmed. Hollywood Reporter said that ambulances were dispatched to Barker's Los Angeles residence at 1 p.m. PT.Barker's manager told TMZ that the 94-year-old woke up to severe back pain. TMZ captured photos of Barker being loaded onto the back of an ambulance. He was then transported to Cedars-Sinai hospital.Barker was a fixture of daytime TV since the early days of television. Barker spent 35 years as host of The Price is Right until his retirement in 2007. Before The Price Is Right, Barker hosted "Truth or Consequences" for 18 years. Barker will celebrate his 95th birthday on Dec. 12. 765

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on Monday gave up his effort to challenge special counsel Robert Mueller in civil court.Manafort has withdrawn his appeal of a judge's decision to throw out his civil lawsuit against Mueller, according to court filings."It is hereby stipulated and agreed by and between the parties that the (case) be voluntarily dismissed," the new filing said.Manafort filed the initial lawsuit in January against Mueller, the Justice Department and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein,?who appointed Mueller as special counsel. A federal judge?dismissed the case in April, saying that the civil proceedings were "not the appropriate vehicle" for Manafort to try to chip away at Mueller's authority.In her ruling, federal Judge Amy Berman Jackson told Manafort to pursue his grievances against Mueller during his criminal proceedings. Manafort then asked the federal appeals court in Washington, DC, to review her decision.The decision to drop the appeal comes one day before Manafort's criminal trial is scheduled to begin in Virginia federal court. Manafort is accused of financial crimes, including bank fraud and tax evasion, relating to his lobbying work for the government of Ukraine. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Jury selection begins Tuesday.The unsuccessful civil lawsuit sought, among other things, to prevent Mueller from bringing additional charges in the future, including potential charges relating to Manafort's work on the Trump campaign. Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election, including potential coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. President Donald Trump and Manafort have both said there was no collusion.Manafort has used similar arguments to challenge his indictments in Virginia and Washington. But federal judges overseeing both cases have upheld Mueller's authority to investigate and prosecute Manafort. One of the judges, T.S. Ellis, said prosecutors rightfully "followed the money paid by pro-Russian officials" to Manafort.Manafort is also charged in federal court in Washington with undisclosed foreign lobbying and money laundering. He pleaded not guilty to these allegations, and the case is scheduled to go to trial in mid-September.The judge overseeing that trial, Berman Jackson, revoked Manafort's bail last month and ordered him to await trial from a jail cell. For parents preparing to start this school year with their children at home, there are concerns about children adapting mentally and emotionally to another semester away from their schoolmates and teachers.“I am a parent myself, so I can relate to the anxiety,” said Janine Domingues, a clinical psychologist with the Child Mind Institute.Domingues says parents have very good reason to be concerned.“For children or adolescents who were already prone to anxiety or social anxiety or depression, certainly this time, as you are more isolated and can’t interact with others, it can heighten anxiety and depression symptoms,” said Domingues.There are warning signs parents can look for to recognize if the isolation and social distancing are getting to their child.“Further isolation in their room, not getting out of bed, not engaging in activity that they normally would’ve engaged in,” said Domingues. “And honestly, if they are expressing sadness every day and in intense levels of that.”If a parent sees some of those warning signs, they are strongly encouraged to take action.“The number one step is reaching out for mental health services,” said Domingues. “Whether it is reaching out to a previous psychologist or therapist that you worked with or a new psychologist.”Organizations like the Child Mind Institute provide telehealth services for children struggling mentally and emotionally right now, and they even provide financial assistance for families concerned about affording the sessions.However, before it gets to the point where a child may need help, Domingues said there are steps parents can take to help their child adjust better to this start of the school year at home.“Really talking about it, honestly,” said Domingues. “Helping them understand that there might be another time where we are doing this at home.”She said parents should ask their children about their concerns, ask what worked well at the end of last semester and what did not, and ask the child about what they think they will feel at the start of this semester.“It can feel very overwhelming and anxiety-provoking, but again, it’s just taking one step at a time and talking through it,” said Domingues.Domingues, and most psychologists, believe kids are resilient and with the proper guidance, they can adapt to whatever schooling situation they’ll be in this fall. 2363
