SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As President Trump and Democratic lawmakers battle over funding for the president's border wall project, construction at the border is already slated to begin early this year.Texas-based construction company SLSCO was awarded 7 million last month for a series of wall projects along the U.S.-Mexico border in California beginning in February. The contracts include up to 14 miles of secondary wall and 15 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall in the San Diego, Yuma, and El Centro sectors.A Border Patrol spokesperson said construction of a primary pedestrian wall was already approved, though could not comment as to whether secondary wall construction was previously approved or tied directly to President Trump's Executive Order for a continuous border wall.RELATED: Roughly 150 migrants attempt to climb border fence, throw rocks at Border Patrol agentsIn February 2019, construction on 14 miles of secondary wall will start adjacent to San Diego's primary fence replacement project that is currently underway. SLSCO is also in charge of that project.Then in July 2019, construction on 15 miles of pedestrian replacement wall will start, with 11 miles in Calexico, three miles in Tecate, and one mile in Andrade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Back to school looked different for everyone according to Misty Jones, who helped run Career Online High School, a free program put on by the San Diego Public Library."It's geared towards people who have disengaged from the educational system for some type of reason and did not graduate."The program allowed them to finish where they left off through online courses."They get their high school diploma and career certificate by the end of it," Jones described.The program was around for 5 years and had gained popularity in the Spring."People are at home and they have more time. It's difficult to go to school and try to work at the same time," Jones said.They typically saw 50 students a year but since March the number doubled."I know a lot of people are out of of jobs and they're thinking of their future, 'what can I do to ensure success moving forward'."Genevieve Redondo is a mother of two and dropped out of high school her senior year. "I have ADHD and dyslexia. Being in school was difficult because of the attention, I couldn't focus all that well," Redondo described.She received her diploma through COHS then went on to nursing school and eventually got her master's degree."The opportunity they gave me to graduate, ever since then everything has change, my entire life has changed and it's been incredible."Jones said the average age was 28 to 35, but that was just the average."We have people in their 60's that are going back and getting their high school diploma and that shows its never too late to get your education."They even held graduation ceremonies like any other high school did."I cry at every graduation," said Jones. "It's really fulfilling to help people be their best self and help them achieve goals they never thought they'd achieve." 1798

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol investigators are correcting their initial findings of a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 5 in February.In March, CHP said 35-year-old Justin Callahan was at fault for the fatal collision on the northbound I-5 transition ramp to westbound I-8 on Feb. 26 just before 2 a.m.Investigators had believed Callahan, driving in a Volkswagen Jetta, was traveling eastbound in the westbound I-8 lanes when he collided with a Toyota Camry on the transition ramp — a finding Callahan's family had contested.RELATED: Family disputes CHP's details of I-5 wrong-way crashCallahan died at the scene while two female occupants inside the Toyota suffered major injuries.Friday, CHP said they've now concluded the Toyota was traveling in the wrong direction when it collided with Callahan's vehicle on the ramp.Investigators also said the driver of the Toyota, 22-year-old Lauren Freeman, was found to be under the influence at the time of the crash.Freeman turned herself into San Diego Superior Court Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Around 400,000 people in San Diego County face hunger, including one in six children. To fight and end hunger in our county, programs like Feeding San Diego bridge the gap for those facing food insecurity and getting access to donations. "We were faced with so many decisions of its either food or paying the bills," said Gabriela Sanchez. Sanchez, a mom of four with a baby on the way, struggled to put food on the table after her husband got sick. "It was hard to even explain to the kids," Sanchez said. Now, she is getting the help she needs through Feeding San Diego's program in Oceanside. The program sets up at San Luis Rey Elementary school, one of their distribution sites, so the community can get access to free healthy food. "It's been a big difference between eating fruit from the cans to eating the fresh fruit and vegetables," Sanchez said. Donate to Month of a Million MealsAccording to Matthew Jennings, Director of Communications at Oceanside Unified School District, access to fresh, healthy food, will help students succeed in the classroom. "When a child shows up for school in the morning, and their belly isn't hungry and they're not worried about what they are going to each for lunch, students and families are able to focus on their education and on their time together," Jennings said. Gabriela Sanchez says the food has made a positive impact in her kids' lives. "With Ivan and Jacob, we've seen so much improvement. They have actually been able to exceed their reading levels, their math levels. They have been able to concentrate more," Sanchez said. The impact Feeding San Diego's program has had on this family is life-changing. "They go, mom, you're always crying, and I'm like it's just a blessing," Sanchez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — At least one person was injured and another person was trapped following a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 on Wednesday.San Diego Police said three vehicles were involved in a collision on southbound I-5 at SR-905 just before 4:30 p.m.An officer received minor injuries in the crash, according to SDPD. At least one driver was trapped in a vehicle, requiring crews to try and extract the person.It was unclear how the collision happened or whether there were any other injuries.Sky10 showed traffic backing up for miles behind the collision:ABC 10News is monitoring this breaking news. 616
