SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three six-month-old wallaby joeys are being hand-raised at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park before they are old enough to be welcomed into the park’s mob of wallabies.Photos released by the zoo show the wallaby joeys spending time in their pouches where the zoo says they are most comfortable.The wallaby joeys, which currently weigh between two and three pounds each, are being bottle-fed.Once fully grown, wallaby females can weigh between 26 to 35 pounds.The wallabies will join numerous other red-necked wallabies and gray kangaroos in an exhibit at the soon-to-open Walkabout Australia. 616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Padres kept their season alive Thursday with a come from behind win against the St. Louis Cardinals.The Padres lost the first game of the wild card series, but Thursday’s win forces a third game against the Cardinals.“Feeling incredible,” Padres fan Chris Pekos said after the game. “As a native San Diegan, I’ve loved The Pardes forever. We’ve waited a long time for a huge win like this.”Pekos was one of many Padres fans that watched the game in one of the downtown restaurants near Petco Park. However, large crowds, typically expected during a make-or-break game, were noticeably absent, likely due to the pandemic and social distancing rules.The Padres play the Cardinals in game three on Friday. 743

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week, Team 10 was given an exclusive look inside a controversial nonprofit North County horse rescue, after it announced in April it was shutting down. 10News Investigative Reporter Jennifer Kastner interviewed the founder, who claims that both she and the horses are victims in this tragic ending.“I've always said I thought this should be a movie or a show because it's more dramatic than anything you see on television,” says Michelle Cochran of HiCaliber Horse Rescue in Valley Center.RELATED: Questions of fraud and abuse at prominent horse rescue in San Diego CountyWith her “f-bombs”, tattoos and piercings, Cochran is the black sheep of horse rescue. Yet beneath the tough exterior, she feels crippled over the fate of her highly criticized nonprofit. Even after announcing its closure in April, Cochran says she is still overwhelmed by cyberbullies who track her every move.“[They want to know] where I'm going, what I'm doing, how I’m doing it and what I'm dressed like. Did I gain weight? Did I lose weight? What does my makeup look like? My teeth? Did I get a nose job? A boob job? Nothing is off limits," she explains.Just this Thursday, 10News saw a meme posted on Facebook, attacking Cochran.10News’ first visit to HiCaliber Horse Rescue was in February when Cochran was embroiled in accusations of fraud and abuse. She would post videos at horse auctions, begging for money to buy sickly livestock that she said would otherwise ship to slaughterhouses in Mexico. After collecting donations, horses would come home with her. Some would be rehabilitated. Others were shot.“You're accused of buying horses that can't be saved, raising money to save them and then shooting them,” we told her in February. She replied, “It costs money to save them. It costs money to diagnose them. It costs money to haul them. It costs money to get their body removed."Gunshot euthanasia is legal in California. Cochran claims it's cheap, quick, easiest on horses, and more compassionate than sending them to slaughter. However, her critics have ripped her apart for her practices and the property's conditions.In February, horse trainer Abby Kogler told us, “We’re against getting horses from the abusers and then taking trusting people's money who think they're saving horses from this nonexistent slaughter pipeline and then they're just put down.”Despite arguments from some people that Cochran was stealing donor money, tax records appear to reveal that 96% of the ,017,523 brought in over a year, went to operational expenses.Even though a county investigation came up mostly clean, HiCaliber's reputation was still ruined from the social media frenzy.“There was really no option but to close down because we were assumed to be guilty before anyone gave us the chance to be innocent,” says Cochran.She tells us that donations dropped by more than 65 percent and volunteers dropped by 85 percent. While she’s managed to adopt out more than 50 horses, she still has more than 100 horses to find homes for. The problem is that there are reportedly very few takers.“It's a struggle but it's what I signed up for,” she adds.San Diego County Code Enforcement will continue to fine HiCaliber Horse Rescue if it doesn't keep reducing its horse population. The next milestone placed on the rescue is to reduce to 113 horses by the end of July.Cochran adds,” The real enemy here is slaughter. If you're trying to fight the battle of keeping America's horses out of the slaughter pipeline, you have to consider euthanasia as one of the answers to the problem.”The California Veterinary Medical Board is still conducting an investigation into the practices at HiCaliber Horse Rescue.Cochran says she’ll reconsider keeping the rescue open if she can find a donor to buy the ranch or help the nonprofit find a more affordable location.Correction: An earlier version of this article reported that San Diego County Animal Services will implement the fines. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego County District Attorney’s office on Friday released body camera, surveillance, and cell phone video connected with two officer-involved shootings and three in-custody death incidents. The video is being released now as part of the DA's review of the incident.In each of the encounters, DA’s office investigators cleared the law enforcement parties of criminal wrongdoing. Lemon Grove One of the officer-involved shootings occurred at Del Taco at 7060 Broadway in Lemon Grove on Jan. 5. A witness said Adolfo Gonzalez pointed a gun at customers inside. When deputies arrived, they told Gonzalez to put his hands up but he immediately pulled a handgun from under the table and pointed it at deputies, the district attorney’s office said. All three deputies on the scene opened fire, killing Gonzalez. Investigators later determined that Gonzalez suffered from mental illness and had recently purchased a handgun. The day of the shooting, Gonzalez told a family member he wanted to get in a shoot-out with police, according to investigators. Gonzalez had a blood alcohol level of .25 at the time of his death. City Heights San Diego Police received calls in February about a partially nude man walking in traffic and falling down, possibly being struck by a vehicle. Officers arrived to find Lawayne Horne, 44, disoriented. A friend said Horne was under the influence of PCP. During their assessment, Horne fell on the pavement and struck his head, then began rolling around and screaming, investigators said. Horne began biting the flesh from his hands and fingers, according to the report. Officers placed Horne in handcuffs which were replaced by soft restraints when paramedics arrived. Horne went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance and died at the hospital a week later. The Medical Examiner determined Horne died of meth and PCP intoxication with hypertensive cardiovascular disease as a contributing factor. Little Italy The struggle between a man who ran naked through Little Italy in Oct. 2018 and San Diego Police was also reviewed. Witnesses reported seeing 39-year-old Vito Vitale running naked in the street. Police said Vitale was sweating profusely, very animated, and disoriented. An officer handcuffed him, at which point Vitale began struggling and the two fell to the sidewalk. Witnesses attempted to hold Vitale’s legs in place as two additional officers arrived. Vitale “exhibited significant strength, pushing one officer up with his legs,” investigators said. Vitale’s pulse weakened and his breathing became shallow as paramedics arrived. Vitale died later that night at UCSD Medical Center. Toxicology tests showed Vitale had cocaine and cannabinoids in his blood. The Medical Examiner determined his causes of death were the effects of cocaine and physiologic stress of restraint was a contributing factor. Del Mar Also reviewed by district attorney’s office investigators was the shooting of a man who fired into the air during the Ice Cube concert at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Sept. 2, 2018. Prosecutors said Daniel Elizarraras was upset he could not get tickets to the sold-out concert and fired two rounds into the air near a ticket booth. The deputy deployed his Taser on Elizarraras with little effect, investigators said. After Elizarraras refused to drop his gun, a deputy saw him lower his weapon, at which point the deputy shot Elizarraras in the torso and shoulder, the district attorney’s office said. Elizarraras survived the shooting and later pleaded guilty, receiving a three-year prison term. Fallbrook Investigators examined evidence in the case of Marco Napoles-Rosales, 29, after he trespassed on the property of a Fallbrook Circle K in August 2018. A deputy who tried to remove Napoles-Rosales said he became combative, biting down on the deputy’s thumb and not letting go. A deputy used a Taser on Napoles-Rosales without effect. He was placed in a safety restraint known as a wrap. Paramedics arrived and said Napoles-Rosales was showing signs of excited delirium and extreme strength, investigators said. Napoles-Rosales became unresponsive in the ambulance and died the next day at the hospital. An autopsy showed he died due to sudden cardiopulmonary arrest associated with meth intoxication and physical exertion during restraint. 4325

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This year, the Drug Enforcement Administration is adding vaping products to the list of what they’ll accept on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The agency will be accepting prescriptions and vaping products on October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. According to the agency, nearly 10 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs in 2018. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there have been 33 deaths in 24 states and nearly 1,500 lung injuries from vaping in 2019.The agency is treating the events like an outbreak, saying the best advice is to avoid using all forms of E-Cigarettes. The DEA decided to add vaping products to their drug take back event to make sure they're safely removed."If people throw them away, if people dump them down the toilet, if people store them in a drawer, they're still not safe," says DEA Special Agent in Charge Colin Roane."
