SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police are investigating after a man died in custody after reportedly breaking down a fence and walking into someone’s home Tuesday afternoon. Police were called to the 2900 block of Hornet Way around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon after receiving a call from someone saying a man, later identified as Buddie Thomas Nichols, 40, had entered his home through a rear door. According to police, the man broke down a fence and walked into the home through an open back door. Two of the residents were upstairs while their 9-year-old daughter was asleep downstairs, according to police. Police say one of the residents came downstairs when he heard commotion and confronted Nichols, punching him twice in the face and rendering him unconscious. Police say the suspect woke up and ran out of the house displaying bizarre behavior after the resident kicked him. Witnesses told police they believed the man was on drugs. When police arrived and tried to take the Nichols into custody, officers say he resisted, forcing them to use physical force to get him into handcuffs. After paramedics arrived, police say Nichols became unresponsive and later died after being taken to the hospital. 1215

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County homebuyers could be gaining an upper hand in negotiations as the region's housing market slows.A new report from real-estate tracker CoreLogic says 2,936 homes changed hands in San Diego County in November, an 11 percent drop from November 2017. Meanwhile, the rate of home-price appreciation slowed to 4.6 percent year-over-year. The median home price was 5,000 in November."It's a good time to get in there," said Mark Goldman, a San Diego loan officer with C-2 Financial. "There's more selection of homes to purchase, and there's probably sellers who are more willing to consider offers maybe a little bit below their list price, and so forth."CoreLogic says Southern California as a whole has seen its biggest sales drop in three years. The company says higher interest rates and the volatile stock market could be contributing to buyer pullback. The average rate for a 30-year-fixed is now 4.55 percent, up about a half percent from a year ago. Goldman said qualifying families, even with a few percent cash down, should be able to get an offer accepted in this market."Be cautious, make an offer at a good price, work with a professional realtor who can guide you to a reasonable price, but if you're going to be in that house five years or so, I think you'll be happy," Goldman said.Goldman said the market is coasting at a rate of appreciation that is more sustainable. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County officials urged people across the county to cooperate with the latest public health orders and purple tier restrictions Monday.The county broke its record for the highest single-day COVID-19 cases reported on Sunday at 1,087. The second highest day was reported Monday with 833 new cases.During an emergency briefing, county officials said too many people fail to take the proper measures to slow the spread.“It is really about wearing facial coverings, and the social distancing, and staying home when you are sick,” said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer.“As we go into the Thanksgiving holiday, we know that people want to get together, but I encourage you to follow the guidance that we have posted on our website, that the state, as well as the CDC, are recommending. Really limit your engagements or gatherings over the holidays. Follow the guidance from the state, no more than three households. I would strongly encourage you not to travel out of state.”County Supervisor Greg Cox said cease and desist letters were sent to several businesses and entities that refused to follow the purple tier closure orders over the weekend.Wooten recently asked law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts in their jurisdictions; Supervisor Cox sent similar letters Friday.“On Friday, I sent a letter to all the mayors in our region to have them step up enforcement of state and local public health orders. And our regional compliance team is moving forward on complaints we are receiving, we need your cooperation, and we certainly need your compliance,” said Cox. “If not, we are fully prepared to enforce compliance with our local law enforcement agencies and other jurisdictions.”“You can be open, and you can be safe. Most of California, however, remains abnormally dry, according to the report. While we may enjoy the sparkle and booms, your pets may run for their lives.“You don’t want to have them outside where all those loud fireworks are going off,” said San Diego Humane Society spokeswoman Dariel Walker. The organization sees a sudden spike in stray animals around this time of year, she said.Just like on July 4th, many pets who are terrified of loud noises run off in a panic. Walker suggested that owners prevent that by creating a calming environment for animals. “You can even even play music or have the TV on or have some noise in the background to drown out that loud sound of the fireworks,” Walker said. Walker advised pet owners to be prepared with a microchip in case they do run away.
