LA MESA (KGTV) -- East County residents are worried about thousands of parolees flocking to their community. The state wants to add a parole office in the city of La Mesa but residents are not happy about the proposed location, saying it's too close to their schools and homes. “I’m very uncomfortable with the prospect of violent and sexual offenders routinely coming into my neighborhood,” says Susan Nichols with the Grossmont- Mt. Helix Improvement Association. The new building sits at the end of Grossmont Summit Drive, directly behind homes on Mt. Helix. The location is in close proximity to local schools, less than a mile from Grossmont High School and Mt. Helix Academy. “The bus stop that would service this facility is directly in front of Grossmont High School, the same stop that the students will be using,” says Nichols.Supervisor Dianne Jacob sent her community a letter the Department of Corrections addressed to the La Mesa City Clerk. Parent Wendy Tinsley Becker says she’s extremely concerned about the children in this area. Her family made copies of the letter and hand-delivered them to neighbors living close to the site. Supervisor Jacob sent 10News a statement that says in part: “I’m deeply troubled by the state proposal and I share the residents’ concerns about the impact on public safety. Allowing convicted criminals to frequent an area that close to thousands of Grossmont High School students and quiet neighborhoods is a terrible idea.”The La Mesa City Clerk says they are doing what they can to prevent the parole office from coming to the city. 10News reached out to the State Department of Corrections about the location. They responded in part:“The men and women who will be served at this office lived there before they were incarcerated and have returned to the community. (KGTV) - An Uber driver says she was physically assaulted by a passenger Sunday night in La Mesa after a dispute over a mask."This is definitely the most insane experience driving with Uber that I've ever had," said Tia.Just past 6 p.m. Sunday, Tia, who first started driving for Uber last summer, arrived for a pickup outside the Echo Pointe apartments.Tia says a man and the passenger's sister ushered the passenger into the car with a warning for Tia: the passenger was drunk."She didn't have a mask on ... so I asked her if she could please put on a spare mask, which I had in the back seat. Took her awhile to put it on, but she did," said Tia.As the ride got started, Tia says her passenger wouldn't let it go."She said in a very snarky tone, 'Are you more comfortable now that I have a mask on?' She was very drunk, very belligerent, yelling," said Tia.Tia say she decided to end the ride."I was fed up with the disrespect," said Tia.Tia says she returned to the pickup spot and asked her to get out repeatedly, but the woman refused. Tia recorded some of it on her phone. Tia, who eventually called 911, says when she got out of the car and reached in to remove the woman's belongings, the passenger grabbed her neck from behind.According to Tia, the passenger became violent, chasing her around the car for several minutes, at one point hitting in the right eye. Tia says the passenger's sister and the man came out and subdued the woman, allowing Tia to drive away, and meet police and file a report."I was dumbfounded. I couldn’t believe I was assaulted for essentially wearing a mask ... People need to treat each other with respect. Wear a mask ... We're just trying to keep everybody safe," said Tia.Tia says she's still feeling pain in her eye but she's feeling better. She's hoping an arrest is made so a message is sent: this behavior is not acceptable.A La Mesa Police spokesperson says they are awaiting the report to be turned in by the officer before it is assigned to an investigator. 2030

LA MESA (CNS) - One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 8 in La Mesa and lanes of the freeway were blocked this morning until further notice.The crash occurred near state Route 125 at 9:55 p.m. Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.A witness told officers one vehicle was being driven recklessly just before hitting the center divider wall.The crash blocked three westbound lanes of the freeway and a SigAlert was issued at 10:30 p.m., the CHP said.The age, gender, and name of the victim was not disclosed. 557

LEMON GROVE (KGTV) - Fire crews snuffed out a brush fire near Imperial Avenue and San Altos Place in Lemon Grove Sunday evening. Heartland Fire said the blaze started shortly after 5 p.m. when a palm tree caught fire near trolley tracks. Trolley service was disrupted near the Massachusetts Avenue station and busses were used to transport passengers.The fire threatened about 20 homes, and no one was evacuated. Some power lines were damaged, along with railroad ties to the trolley. The fire also damaged a residential fence and the eaves of a few homes.Nobody was injured in the fire, which was contained in about 40 minutes by several fire crews, including a water-dropping helicopter.The San Diego Sheriff's Bomb and Arson Unit is investigating the cause of the fire. 815

LAKESIDE (CNS) - A blaze burned roughly a half-acre of vegetation in a remote area north of Lakeside Friday morning before crews were able to get a handle on the flames.The fire was reported around 4:15 a.m. off state Route 67 about a mile north of Slaughterhouse Canyon Road, according to Cal Fire San Diego.Within 10 minutes the blaze had grown to about a half-acre, but crews were able to halt the forward rate of spread by 4:35 a.m., the state agency reported.No structures were threatened and no injuries were immediately reported. 544
