SAN DIEGO — A University City rabbi says a teenager on a bicycle hit him over the head and yelled a racial slur Saturday, steps from his synagogue.Rabbi Yonatan Halevy, of the Shiviti Congregation, says this was the latest in a series of incidents by a group of teenagers targeting his congregation that has increasingly escalated. "Everyday they come by here, taunt us, throwing bottles at us, sitting on our roof blasting music, and then breaking a window to my van," Halevy said. "Last but not least, what happened on Saturday."Halevy moved the congregation of 44 families into a 3,300 square-foot space on the southwest corner of the UC Marketplace shopping center to allow for enough social distancing to celebrate the High Holy Days amid the Coronavirus outbreak. He says the group of teenagers routinely causes a nuisance on the property, but seems to single out his congregation, formally called Kahillet Shaar HaShamayim. On Saturday, Halevy says he was walking to synagogue with his father on Governor Drive, when one of the teens recognized them. He says the teen biked over, hit the rabbi over the head with a closed fist, called him the N-word and yelled a variation of white power before biking away. "I felt very scared, definitely unsafe for the first time in my life in this neighborhood," he said. Halevy called 9-1-1 and said police officers arrived 45 minutes later. They did not make an arrest, but he told them about the series of incidents. The congregation has also designated some of its members as security guards. The incident comes amid an increase in anti-Semitism in the United States. Last year, a 19-year-old allegedly entered the Chabad of Poway Synagogue, killed one congregant and injured three others, including a child. On Monday, Halevy said he met with four officers, including a San Diego Police detective and a community relations officer. He says they pledged to increase resources to the case and are going to search for the teens, getting school police involved. A police spokesman said it would be investigated as a hate crime. SAN DIEGO — NFL quarterback Drew Brees and his wife say a San Diego jeweler lied and falsely represented the value of the jewelry sold to them.That's according to a lawsuit in which Brees and his wife are seeking million in damages and court costs from Vahid Moaradi, the founder of CJ Charles Jewlers, for fraud, a breach of an oral contract, and violations of business professions code.The lawsuit accuses Moradi of making friends with the Breeses and then using his "relationship and position to induce" Brees to rely "on his false representations as to the investment quality and market value" of numerous diamonds, a lawsuit filed in San Diego said.In the lawsuit, Brees says he has spent millions of dollars in business with Moradi, purchasing jewelry as gifts and as investments."In total, [the Brees] invested approximately million in investment quality diamonds recommended by Moradi," the suit states. "The independent appraiser determined the true market value of the diamonds ... was approximately million less than the prices the [Brees] paid."Brees also claims that Moradi "confessed he charged Plaintiffs a substantial markup," in one case charging a 550 percent markup. (KGTV) -- The California Assembly has voted to ban the manufacture and sale of new fur products.Animal welfare groups have rallied around the bill, arguing the fur industry is inhumane and pointing to alternatives like faux fur.But opponents of the bill have countered that the proposed law would devastate fur retailers and manufacturers.Some California cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and Berkeley, have already passed ordinances banning the sale of fur.The New York City council has also considered banning fur sales in America's biggest city.The bill would not include used fur products or furs used for traditional purposes. SAN DIEGO — One of San Diego's biggest restaurant chains will reopen Friday, with plans to hire up to 250 new people by summer.Each of the Brigantine's 14 restaurants will begin hosting guests at the end of the week with spaced out tables, employee temperature checks and increased hand sanitizing stations, chief executive Mike Morton said in an interview Tuesday. Morton added that tables will be spaced out, but that outdoor event space at some locations will be converted to main dining to increase capacity. "It's a hard business when the economy is at full strength and there's not this silent enemy out there," he said. "Now it's just another element to deal with."The chain includes Brigantine, Miguel's Cocina, and Ketch Tap and Grill. Morton said the organization has been able to bring back most of its 1,100 furloughed workers, though some have declined because of unemployment boosts. He cautioned that decision as short sighted, given the tight job market that will persist after the extra benefits have gone away. Meanwhile, Brigantine is advertising 134 openings on its website at locations across the county. Additionally, Morton said Brigantine plans to hire as many as 250 additional for its Portside Pier complex, which is scheduled to open in July along the Embarcadero, on the site of the former Anthony's Fish Grotto. The facility will include three restaurants, two bars and a gelato and coffee shop. "We're always looking for good people," Morton said. "There might not be a spot available today but there might be three tomorrow."Brigantine closed its chain of restaurants two days after the governor's stay-at-home order went into effect in mid March.
