SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health officials have confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 at an assisted living center in the College Area.On Wednesday, 10News tried to get answers from Stellar Care Center, located just south of the College Area. On Tuesday night, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten revealed that they were looking into a patient at the home who may have tested positive. “Our staff [is] investigating this situation and once it's determined if there's individuals or patients with influenza-like illnesses, the staff there will collect specimen and send them to our lab for testing,” she stated.Across the country, concerns over the spread of the virus in nursing homes continues to grow. In Kirkland, Wash., an outbreak of the virus at the Life Care assisted living center lead to at least 35 reported deaths, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In Louisiana, seven deaths have been linked to a retirement community out of New Orleans. 10News reached out to Stellar Care Center and San Diego County for additional information. Skilled nursing facilities throughout the County have amplified their protocols to address the COVID-19 pandemic using strategies similar to those recommended by the County of San Diego in responding to an influenza outbreak. These protocols include limiting the amount of people in congregant settings (including meals, activities and visitors) while amplifying cleaning and sanitation measures and providing additional training for staff."The State Department of Social Services writes, “In order to protect confidentiality, we are not able confirm or provide details regarding specific individuals or locations.” 1835

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite criticism, a spokesperson for the California Republican Party told ABC 10News on Tuesday that the party will continue placing unofficial ballot drop boxes around communities.They've popped up in Orange, Los Angeles, and Fresno counties, but so far none have been reported in San Diego. Several have been labeled "official", as confirmed by CA GOP spokesperson Hector Barajas. “We could've had better wording on the ballot boxes and so we changed some of the wording around already on the ballot boxes but the important thing to remember is that these ballot boxes are inside our campaign headquarters or inside of businesses or other organizations. It's not as though they're outside in front of a mailbox or outside a library or a secondhand store or another place of business,” he told ABC 10News.On Monday, California's Secretary of State and the State Attorney General sent a cease and desist to the GOP, calling the boxes illegal. Some argue that the boxes are deceptive and could lead to tampering. “These boxes are not the same as county election drop boxes that are required to meet state security standards,” said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.Barajas told ABC 10News, “What is happening right now is the Secretary of State -- with this cease and desist -- is basically looking to engage in voter suppression [by] eliminating more options for individuals to be able to drop off their ballot.”Barajas said that "ballot harvesting" is a practice that allows a third party to collect voters' completed ballots and was legalized four years ago in a bill authored by San Diego Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.A tweet Tuesday from one of Gonzalez’s accounts reads, "Apparently, Republicans in our legislature think that when I wrote that a voter could designate a 'person' to turn in their ballot, they thought I meant a fraudulently labeled box. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Every Thursday afternoon in Logan Heights, people line up to get food.Angela Brannon-Baptiste is the woman who started the pantry and the organization that supplies it, called "It's All About the Kids".The non-profit has been serving local families since 2004, handing out more than 1.5 million meals and counting."They tell us that for many of them this is the only food they're receiving because there's just no money to buy food," said Baptiste.When the pandemic hit the group saw the need grow almost overnight."We saw hundreds of additional families come to see us each week and it was a bit frightening," Baptiste explained.Although they'd like to help everyone, they're restricted by their own means.Unlike some other food distribution programs that operate on a first come first serve basis, It's All About the Kids takes a more targeted approach."We decided we needed to narrow that down and really work with the schools to identify who was most in need, so that's who we help now," Baptiste said.At this point, that help is going to about 2,200 families currently on the program.Those who show up get boxes of not just something to eat, but something good to eat.Batiste says it's important they provide as much fresh food as possible, " I think that food is so important and that is our responsibility as successful adults to give back to those that are less fortunate and to help them, so that's just always been my mantra." 1463

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From birthdays to barbecues, there have been five community outbreaks linked to private parties at homes.A spokesperson for the County of San Diego said the outbreaks happened just after Easter through mid-June, and 33 people tested positive for COVID-19.Three of the residential outbreaks are still active, while two have expired. The outbreaks at private residences have caused health officials to worry, especially with the 4th of July quickly approaching."People who wanted to get together with friends after a period of not being able to do so are having gatherings of maybe 10 to 25 people," said Dr. Eric Mcdonald, director of the county’s epidemiology and immunization department. It is imperative the public does their part and takes responsibility to limit the spread of the virus.”ABC 10News heard from several law enforcement agencies across the county, including the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, Chula Vista, Coronado, La Mesa, and El Cajon Police Departments.Many said they have been focusing on education first or giving warnings when they see violations.
