SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dozens of San Diego short-term vacation rental hosts sounded off Wednesday against a bill that could limit how much they're able to rent out some of their properties on sites like Airbnb and VRBO.The hosts implored the California Coastal Commission to oppose the bill at its meeting on Shelter Island.The bill, by North County Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner Horvath, is specific to San Diego County's coastal zone and would sunset in five years. It would limit how much hosts can rent out their non-primary residences on sites like Airbnb and VRBO to 30 days a year. "I can't believe this has even come up as an actual bill," Airbnb host John Wilson told the commission.Hosts also said they are using the income to put their kids through college, and that their rentals provide families affordable, large accommodations near the coast, allowing visitors to avoid renting multiple hotel rooms and resort fees. But Boerner Horvath said the bill is needed because short-term rentals are adding to the region's housing supply crunch."When the upper level of housing stock is removed for short-term vacation rentals, the folks that would have actually lived there move down the market; they usually want to live in a certain area," she said. The bill passed the Assembly and is now scheduled for state Senate committee hearings. The legislation comes after an Airbnb-led signature drive essentially blocked restrictions the San Diego City Council approved in 2018. The commission heard 90 minutes of testimony, overwhelmingly opposed to the bill. Still, it remained neutral on the legislation. His wife does not have that luxury. “My wife has been a nurse for about 12 years now,” Williams said. He is helping to make face masks to send to health care workers. “It is personal,” Williams said. “I would want to make sure my wife is protected when she was trying to help save others’ lives. I believe most people in the world would feel the same way as our health care workers.Williams, who works for Craft Bot, makes the headbands for the masks. Others help put it together. Others have one because they're a consumer that owns a 3D printer and they can print three or four a day. He’s made five so far, with each one taking several hours to print. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Holiday light displays are one of the best aspects of the holiday season.Thousands upon thousands of lights in some cases dress up homes and businesses throughout San Diego County, bringing out families and friends to enjoy the sights and sounds of the season.Throughout the county, San Diegans have numerous displays to drive to and admire. Lights are on display from Dec. 2 to Dec. 31, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. (closed rain days.) "Christmas on Knob Hill" is located at Knob Hill Road in San Marcos. Lights are displayed from Nov. 22 to Dec. 30, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Santa will make an appearance from Dec. 14 to Dec. 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. "Candy Cane Lane" covers Hickory Ct., Hickory St., Butterwood Ct., and Rockrose Ct. in Poway. "Christmas Card Lane" is located on Oviedo St. off Black Mountain Rd. in Rancho Penasquitos. "Belardo Lights" runs on Belardo Dr. through Dec. 27. The park will be decked out in lights as well as holiday music, vendors, and food. "Jungle Bells" welcomes the holidays to San Diego Zoo from Dec. 14 - Jan. 6. The park will run daily light shows and entertainment with zoo staff and animals. "San Diego Bay Parade of Lights" brings out boats dressed in hundreds of lights to the bay, as they parade on the water Dec. 9 and 16. "Garden of Lights" at San Diego Botanic Gardens showers the garden in more than 125,000 lights, and hosts marshmallow roasting, a musical light show, and more. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High surf is creating dangerous conditions for swimmers hitting the beach throughout San Diego County. A High Surf Advisory is in effect San Diego coastal cities from Monday morning at 8 A.M. until Tuesday night at 10 P.M.Just before 10 A.M. Monday, SDFD Lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier.They are also cautioning any swimmers and surfers who are not advanced to stay out of the water until the advisory expires.Many advanced surfers tell 10News they have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Those who hit the water Monday took advantage of the seven to 11 foot waves along the coast, saying it’s not just the swell and the direction but the time between the waves and the decreased winds that make for great surf conditions. "The quality and the length its just a great day a great day for everybody,” one surfer tells 10 News.One group of surfers found out first-hand how dangerous these conditions are. They were taking a boat to surf off of Point Loma when the waves flipped in Monday afternoon. The surfers escaped without injury, but the boat had to be towed back to shore. 1130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of protesters gathered in Balboa Park Monday evening, the third day of protests in the San Diego region. A large group began coalescing near the San Diego Police Department headquarters near Broadway and 13th St in the afternoon. As night fell, the group marched up Park Boulevard past San Diego City College and into Balboa Park. Law enforcement officers followed closely. Freeway on-ramps and off-ramp were blocked by CHP officers in tactical gear along the route, preventing protesters from accessing the freeways. After marching through the park, the group stopped near El Prado and Sixth Ave. Many in the group laid down on their stomachs with their arms behind their backs, chanting “I can’t breathe,” in honor of George Floyd, the unarmed black man killed in police custody in Minnesota on May 25, 2020. Afterwards, they held a moment of silence for those killed at the hands of police. Many demonstrators dispersed after, though a group began forming again outside SDPD headquarters. At 10:25, SDPD tweeted that “bottles, fireworks and other objects” were being thrown at officers near their headquarters. Several minutes later, police declared the protest an unlawful assembly and began clearing the area, tweeting, “those who remain or return against this lawful order may be cited/arrested and risk exposure to chemical agents & less-lethal force applications.” As of 11 p.m. SDPD had announced they made one arrest for vandalism. 1481
