SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The fight over the future of short-term vacation rentals in San Diego is now targeting paid signature gatherers hired by the largely Airbnb-funded campaign.The campaign, called "Stand for Jobs, Stop the Vacation Rental Ban," needs to raise about 35,000 signatures to overturn the City Council's recent vote to limit short-term vacation rentals essentially to primary residences. A group of residents called the San Diego Community Working Group on Short-Term Vacation Rentals is now drafting a letter to multiple city officials alleging that the signature gatherers are misleading voters with false information about the regulations. RELATED: Airbnb: San Diego teachers made .7M renting out their home last year"You won't be able to do bed and breakfast, and then there's a huge emphasis on the amount of money on the fee. There is no fee for home sharing," said Gary Wonacott, a member of the group, giving examples of what he's heard.There are now upwards of 200 signature gatherers around San Diego. On Friday, there were five of them spread across the Target shopping center on Sports Arena Boulevard.LaKeisha Weaver says she is being paid more than for every signature she gets. "It's just like a traveling position."Weaver says she tries to engage voters with a very brief verbal pitch and has official literature for them to read. But that strategy, employed by many signature gatherers, is leading to the concerns of inaccurate pitches to voters.But it's unclear how common that is. Outside Target, one signature gatherer was calling to people by saying "Good morning, Sir," or "Good morning, ma'am." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The former head of the Poway Unified School District appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing on five felony charges.Officials charged John Collins with misappropriating and misuse of public money.The complaint accuses Collins of misappropriation of public money dealing with vacation time and sick leave. Poway Unified fired Collins in 2017 after a scathing audit had alleged he received more than 0,000 in overpayments and unauthorized payments.The audit also claims there were an additional ,000 in other transactions that violated district policy and some questionable purchases for airline tickets, dinners and hotel fees.Collins attorney did not respond to 10News request for a comment, but in the past, Collins denied engaging in conduct that was dishonest.If convicted on all charges, Collins could face more than seven years behind bars. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The first round of artists for San Diego’s Wonderfront music festival, supported by the star power of Tony Hawk, Trevor Hoffman, and Rob Machado, was announced Monday. The event will take place on seven stages in parks and on piers along the Port of San Diego, from South Embarcadero up to Broadway Pier. Wonderfront is scheduled for Nov. 22-24, 2019, the weekend before Thanksgiving. Wonderfront organizers plan to mix well-known stars with local favorites and emerging artists. “Our goal with this lineup was to have it stacked from start to finish each day with great artists. It’s hard to really call any certain bands our so-called headliners as so many lines of bands on this festival are all headliners in their own right,” said Wonderfront co-founder Paul Thornton. The first round of artists, announced Monday, include Miguel, Slightly Stoopid, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, MGMT, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Nicky Jam, Don Omar, Vince Staples, Tyga, Los Angeles Azules, Tucanes de Tijuana, Walk the Moon, Phantogram, X Ambassadors, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Lil Dicky, Big Gigantic, and Pennywise. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man killed in 2013 is pleading with the community for new leads as the case has now been left unsolved for more than half a decade.Ralph Green was killed on October 20, 2013.  He was murdered on Jewell Street in the Mountain View neighborhood, on the porch of his daughter’s home while at her 32nd birthday party.His daughter, Chanel Green, says the shooting happened suddenly, catching everyone by surprise.“My mother was on her way outside, so it was a blessing I didn't lose both my parents that day,” Chanel said. “I remember (my mother) shrieking, ‘oh my god, Ralph’s been shot.’ And I ran to the door to see my dad walk holding his neck.”Green says he was shot three times, once through this throat.“My brother catches him, and I moved my brother out of the way, and I laid (my father) down on the ground, and I start screaming, “oh my god, my dad’s been shot, call the police,’” she said. “My dad bled out on the floor, and all I could hope was that he heard me when I told him I loved him.” Channel’s aunt, Jennetta Pierce, was also shot.  Pierce is Ralph’s cousin-in-law.Pierce says she was inside the house, by the window, when the bullets started flying. One of them hit her on the lower back.“I got hit, but I didn’t let anyone know I got hit because my kids were there, and I just told them to get up under the table,” Pierce recalled.  After that, emergency crews came inside the house and took her to the hospital, where she spent two weeks.  She says she spent the next five years focused on moving forward.Police have said the shooting was random.  Chanel says there have been tips, and potentially leads given to the police but none have panned out.  But she’s convinced that there are people out there that know something, that can give her and her family the closure they need.“For anybody who knows somebody that knows something to come forward, now is the time, to tell the truth,” Chanel said. Anyone with information can contact San Diego Police or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2087
