SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time since mid-July, several San Diego County businesses were allowed to resume indoor operations.Under Gov. Gavin Newsom's new tiered system for businesses reopening during the pandemic, several more industries can welcome customers inside, but with modifications and or capacity limits.Danny Daniels owns Barbers Den in Chula Vista. He was thrilled to have customers back inside Monday afternoon."This is my passion, I love barbering, I love everything about barbering," said Daniels, who has been cutting hair for nearly 20 years."I truly believe something as simple as a haircut can go a long way in making someone feel good," he added.Austin Campbell is the managing partner of Sola Salons Studios in San Diego. He owns and helps run 15 locations.Campbell is among the owners who traveled to the state capitol to protest the governor's second shut down back in July."On the first shut down everybody said, this is going to be tough, but it's the right thing to do, everyone just hunkered down and said we gotta get through it, but the second shut down, people took it; personally, they thought this was uncalled for, unfair, completely arbitrary and not researched," said Campbell.Many stylists said the governor's decision to allow salons to move services outside made no sense."The whole offer of outside hair, to be honest with you, was kind of a slap in the face of our industry," said Campbell, adding that inside was safer and more sanitary.Everything that the state recommended we could do, really pretty much was in complete contradiction to what everyone has been taught and been practicing for their entire careers," said Campbell. Salons don't have capacity limits, but social distancing and mask mandates must still be followed. Campbell said the impact of the shutdowns has been far more than just financial."A lot of people are not just financially struggling, but mentally, emotionally, professionally, the beauty industry is more than just a job; it's a true career and identity," said Campbell.Campbell said his salons employ roughly 600 people. Many have already moved out of state.He has a message for the governor."Our industry has been prepared for this long before covid existed, and we take it very seriously. We ask that before you shut down 550 thousand women, first generation immigrants, single mothers, you do a little more research," said Campbell. 2424

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of people packed the stands at the Coronado High School football field Friday, for a celebration of life in honor of Justin Meek.The Coronado High School graduate was one of the 12 people killed at the Thousand Oaks shooting on Nov. 7.The 23-year-old is remembered as a hometown hero, as he died helping protect others from the gunman’s bullets.RELATED: Coronado native among victims of the Thousand Oaks bar shootingMeek moved to Thousand Oaks to attend California Lutheran University. He worked at the Borderline Bar and Grill. Though he often worked as a security guard, the night of the shooting, he and his sister were working as promoters for ‘College Night’ events. When the gunshots started, Justin began helping people get out of harm's way. He was shielding them from gunfire when he was shot and killed. His sister made it out of the bar. The Meek family released a written statement that described Justin’s strong interest in the safety of others since Sept. 11. After college, Meek's family said he wanted to join the Coast Guard and then go on to become a U.S. Marshall. Meek’s mother served in the Air Force, his father served in the Navy, and he too felt a strong call to service.“Justin was a genuine, kind, loving, caring, compassionate, hardworking, talented man and a friend to everyone he met,” the statement reads. “He was a loving son, protective brother, and hero to all.”There is a paddle out for Meek on Saturday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High surf is creating dangerous conditions for swimmers hitting the beach throughout San Diego County. A High Surf Advisory is in effect San Diego coastal cities from Monday morning at 8 A.M. until Tuesday night at 10 P.M.Just before 10 A.M. Monday, SDFD Lifeguards shut down the Ocean Beach Pier.They are also cautioning any swimmers and surfers who are not advanced to stay out of the water until the advisory expires.Many advanced surfers tell 10News they have been looking forward to this day for a long time. Those who hit the water Monday took advantage of the seven to 11 foot waves along the coast, saying it’s not just the swell and the direction but the time between the waves and the decreased winds that make for great surf conditions. "The quality and the length its just a great day a great day for everybody,” one surfer tells 10 News.One group of surfers found out first-hand how dangerous these conditions are. They were taking a boat to surf off of Point Loma when the waves flipped in Monday afternoon. The surfers escaped without injury, but the boat had to be towed back to shore. 1130

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hate crimes throughout San Diego County and across the state are rising at an alarming rate, according to new reports.Hate crimes between 2015 and 2017 rose 27 percent in San Diego County alone, a new report published in Law Enforcement Quarterly states.Statewide, hate crimes rose 44 percent between 2014 and 2017.A report from California’s Attorney General shows that San Diego County saw 95 hate crime incidents in 2017. That compared with 84 hate crimes countywide in 2016 and 72 in 2015.According to documents, anti-Semitic hate crime rose nearly 27 percent from 2016 to 2017 statewide. Hate crimes involving racial bias increased 16 percent within the same amount of time.The statistics come amid recent tragedies around the country, including a shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh Saturday that left 11 people dead. RELATED: Sign outside UCSD Jewish student center defacedThe rise in hate crimes also coincide with recent events in San Diego. In June of 2018, a sign celebrating the Hillel Jewish center was defaced with an anti-Semitic message. The message painted on the sign, which included the F-word, had lettering resembling the Nazi swastika. The sign, which sat at the corner of La Jolla Village Drive and Torrey Pines Road, announced the Glickman Hillel Center, a million project the City Council approved in 2017 after more than a decade of legal opposition. RELATED: Swastikas, rude slurs carved into vandalized Ocean Beach carAlso this year, an Ocean Beach woman made a shocking discovery when she found her can vandalized and covered rude speech, including swastikas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Former KUSI anchor Sandra Maas is suing the station for million, alleging retaliatory termination and violation of the Equal Pay Act. Maas’ attorneys claim McKinnon Broadcasting Company and the company's actions “have caused, and will continue to cause, Maas emotional distress and loss of earnings."Maas was hired by KUSI in 2004 as a morning news co-anchor. In 2010, she was promoted to evening co-anchor. The lawsuit states Maas initiated additional duties for herself in 2016 when she started writing, producing and anchoring a weekly segment called “Healthy Living.” In 2017, court documents say Maas suspected she was underpaid compared to her male peers. The lawsuit claims her suspicions were confirmed when a former manager told her a male co-anchor was being paid ,000 more than her per year. The lawsuit states that in December of 2017, Maas brought up the issue of pay inequity during contract negotiations and “was given the runaround.” After sending a written complaint to her manager and the station’s general manager, Mike McKinnon Jr., the lawsuit says McKinnon told Maas he “did not like the tone of [her] email.”The last few paragraphs of the lawsuit claim failure to provide equal pay to women, gender and/or age discrimination, failure to prevent discrimination, and retaliation.
