BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- With a series of measures being adopted to curb price spikes, the Chinese government is confident of keeping prices at a reasonable level, Premier Wen Jiabao said Sunday morning."Inflation expectations are more dire than inflation itself," Wen said, urging people to remain confident and government agencies to act to stabilize prices.The premier made the remarks while answering a listener's question during a radio broadcast by China National Radio.The consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose to a 28-month high of 5.1 percent year on year in November, according to government statistics.Food price rises contributed to 74 percent of the CPI growth for the month.Wen said the country had a good agricultural supply base which gave the government confidence that it could stabilize prices.In a bid to control inflation, the government has also increased the bank reserve requirement ratio six times and lifted interest rates twice this year, he added.Further, authorities have introduced a package of measures including cutting fees for transportation of agriculture products and intensifying the crackdown on food price speculation.The overall price level, especially of major consumer goods, has now begun to drop, Wen said.

CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will not compromise on issues of principle at the ongoing UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, the country's chief negotiator said on Saturday.Su Wei, the chief Chinese negotiator and head of the climate change department of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks in response to some parties' call for "compromise to make achievements.""All the parties want to reach substantial achievements at the Cancun conference, which can lay a solid foundation for the completion of 'Bali Roadmap' negotiations," Su told Xinhua in an exclusive interview."I think we can cooperate with other parties and even make compromises on some non-principle issues, but we will not compromise on the issues of principle, such as the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is the basis for a package of agreements to be made in Cancun," Su said.The negotiator stressed that the developing countries have reached consensus on the principle issues. "We are keeping solidarity and trying to play a constructive role," he added.Su said some country's opposition to the Kyoto Protocol is no good news to the developing countries, and has exerted negative influence on the conference.Negotiators at the Cancun conference are trying to establish a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges rich nations except the United States to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012."At the end of the first week of the Cancun conference, there are some progresses in adaptation, finance, technology and mitigation for the developing countries, but it is hard to say if the progresses are final ones," Su observed.As for the rumors about a secret Mexican text, Su said that the president of COP16 has told the delegations from every country including China that Mexico will not put forward a secret text."As I know, Mexico, the host country of COP16, is always pursuing the principles of 'open, transparent and widening participation' for the climate negotiations this year. I believe Mexico will continue to keep the principles to try to get the results of balance at the Cancun Conference," he said.Su noted that the ministers will arrive in Cancun in the second week of the conference. He hopes the ministers can play an active role in promoting the progress of the conference.A 70-strong-member delegation of the Chinese government, headed by Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, is cooperating with other parties to seek a solution to global warming in Cancun.The Cancun talks, from Nov. 29 to Dec. 10, are aimed at finding solutions to global climate change. BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will pay official visits to India and Pakistan from Dec. 15 to 19 at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu announced Sunday.Wen will meet and exchange views with leaders of the two countries during the visits on bilateral relations and cooperation as well as international and regional issues of common concern, Jiang said.During his visit to India, Wen will attend activities marking the 60th anniversary of the China-India diplomatic ties with Prime Minister Singh, and meet with Indian people from all circles, Jiang said.In Pakistan, Wen will attend the China-Pakistan business summit and meet friends who have contributed to the friendship of the two countries."I believe Premier Wen's visits will help further China's relations with the two countries and promote regional peace, development and stability," said Jiang.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for a peaceful and comprehensive settlement of the Darfur issue, saying that efforts should be made to remove the root causes that resulted in such an issue.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counselor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."Currently, it is very important to maintain security and stability in Darfur," Yang said. "It is hoped that all parties to the Darfur conflict can solve their differences in a peaceful manner through political dialogue, and reconciliation should be achieved and violence avoided.""Achieving substantial result at an early date of the Darfur peace process and reaching a comprehensive political agreement represents a basic guarantee for the long-term peace and stability in Darfur," he said."Without a robust political process, there would be no peace and stability in Darfur, neither would there be the protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and reconstruction," he said."We once again urged the armed groups which have not yet joined the Doha political process to do so immediately without any conditions," he said.As a mediator of the Darfur peace process, Doha has brokered several rounds of talks between Khartoum and rebel groups over the past years.The Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur, he said. "We will continue to work with the international community to contribute to the peace, stability and development in Sudan."
