School districts across the country are developing their plans to welcome back students this fall. From mandatory mask-wearing to lunch in the classrooms, students who return will likely be faced with a whole new learning environment."There will be a transition. The pandemic has been, in a sense, a chronic trauma almost for all of us and everyone has experienced it differently," says Dr. Christina Conolly, with the National Association of School Psychologists.Dr. Conolly says parents should vary how they talk to their children about the pandemic and attending school, according to their age."For myself, I have a rising 6th grader, 11-year-old, so in talking to her, she understands what’s going on and I want to be honest and truthful but I may not share with her every single detail of what’s going on just because of the fear and anxiety that can come about," says Dr. Conolly.Details to omit include death tolls and what's happening worldwide. Instead, focus on what's happening in your community. For teenagers, many will already have an idea of all the ups and downs of the COVID-19 pandemic, because of their access to cellphones and the internet. Dr. Conolly advises making sure the content they're watching is factual. Younger kids will need reassurance and transparency of what school will look like and what's expected of them."For little kids, it's okay to share with them what’s going on with the pandemic but talk to them in terms of we are here to make sure you stay safe. The school and the staff in your school are making sure you stay safe," says Dr. Conolly."I wanted to see how Trent, my youngest, was when I went out. When I saw how he looked behind the mask and how he kind of retreated I thought, 'OK, I need to be more sensitive with him.' He doesn’t need all the details, he needs the facts, what we do when we go out now, what you’re going to expect when you see," says Beth Middleton, a former elementary school teacher and mom of four.Middleton is hoping her local school district provides parents with specific details of what children can expect when they head back to class."If we don’t prepare them for what the classrooms are going to look like and the counties don't prepare us as parents for what it's going to specifically look like when they enter at all different levels, then we’re not going to know. Then we’re not going to prepare them well enough," says Middleton.Plus, there are some families who have been directly affected by COVID-19. Schools will be focusing on the health, safety and mental health for those students and staff, too. Then, there's the wearing of masks by teachers and some kids who may or may not be wearing them."You might have to explain, 'Well, maybe some kids aren’t wearing masks because they have a health condition and they can’t wear a mask. Or maybe because of other things that are going on.' So just try to make sure you’re educating your kids about best practices and you’re talking to them about if someone isn’t maybe why that’s occurring to help them understand, to try and eliminate anxiety that might exist," says Dr. Conolly. The key is to remain calm. Kids will react to the pandemic the same way you do. Give them the safety tips and reassurance they need to start off school in the healthiest way possible. 3304

SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of San Marcos is turning to crowdfunding to make up for budget shortfalls in their 4th of July plans. For the second straight year, the city set up a GoFundMe website to raise money for fireworks. This year's goal is ,500.City officials tell 10News the city already pitches in ,000 to pay for entertainment, security, permits and other costs associated with their annual Fireworks Extravaganza. They also say traditional donations have brought in about ,000 for fireworks. But the fireworks show costs K."I can tell you, it's the best show in North County," says San Marcos Recreations Programs Manager Andrea Gonzalez. "It's a real show-stopper."Last year's GoFundMe brought in more than ,000. Gonzalez says the city still solicits donations from past donors through the mail and phone calls, but those have been down over the last few years. They decided to get creative and make it easier for people to chip in."It's a lot easier to get on your Facebook page and contribute to a GoFundMe with one click than having to write a check," says Gonzalez.Other 4th of July celebrations have done the same thing. The Lake Murray fireworks show raised ,000 last year through GoFundMe. This year they're up to ,000 in donations.Meanwhile, La Jolla cancelled their show in 2018 because of a lack of funding.Gonzalez says this year's fireworks party will go on as planned, no matter how much money they can raise. But falling short of their goal could put next year's show in jeopardy. 1539

Say goodbye to emotional-support animals in airplane cabins. The Transportation Department issued a final rule Wednesday covering service animals. The rule says only dogs can qualify, and they have to be specially trained to help a person with disabilities. "This final rule defines a service animal as a dog, regardless of breed or type, that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. It allows airlines to recognize emotional support animals as pets, rather than service animals, and permits airlines to limit the number of service animals that one passenger can bring onboard an aircraft to two service animals," the final rule states. Those traveling with a service dog will be required to fill out a form from the DOT "attesting to the animal’s training and good behavior, and certifying the animal’s good health" before flying. For years, some travelers have been bringing untrained dogs and all kinds of other animals on board by claiming they need the animal for emotional support. Airlines believe some passengers were avoiding pet fees by calling their pets emotional-support animals. The DOT proposed the change earlier this year and received more than 15,000 comments on the proposal, they said in a press release. The new rules take effect in 30 days. 1430

Sears is swinging the ax again. The struggling retailer announced plans to close another 46 Sears and Kmart stores. The company has already closed more than 100 stores this year -- including the last remaining Sears in its hometown of Chicago -- as it attempts to stem losses.Employees at 13 Kmart stores and 33 Sears stores were notified that their locations would close by November. When Sears and Kmart merged in 2005, they had about 3,500 US stores between them. About 900 US stores remain, and more closings are likely."We continue to evaluate our network of stores, which is a critical component to our integrated retail transformation, and will make further adjustments as needed," the company said in a statement.Liquidation sales at some of the stores will start as soon as August 30.Sears has lost .2 billion since 2010, its last profitable year and sales have plunged 60% in that time. The company has been looking at selling assets as a way to raise money. In August, CEO and majority shareholder Eddie Lampert offered to buy the company's Kenmore appliance brand for 0 million, and its Sears Home Services division for between million and million.Lampert said he also plans to negotiate with lenders to try to extend the repayment schedule for some of Sears' debt.Shares of Sears plunged 35% in the week since Lampert's bid was disclosed, and hit an all-time low of .15 a share Wednesday. The stock closed trading at .18, still down 5% for the day.Stores set to close:Kmarts:Spring Valley, California,Clovis, California,Antioch, CaliforniaLos Angeles, California (at 6310 W. 3rd Street)Milford, ConnecticutNewark, DelawareSteger, IllinoisCape Girardeau, MissouriColumbus, MississippiRiverhead, New YorkGresham, OregonScott Depot, West VirginiaGillette, WyomingSears:Flagstaff, ArizonaSanta Cruz, CaliforniaGrand Junction, ColoradoTampa, Florida (at University Square Mall)Doral, FloridaNaples, FloridaSavannah, GeorgiaAtlanta, GeorgiaBrunswick, GeorgiaBloomington, IllinoisFort Wayne, IndianaFlorence, KentuckyHammond, LouisianaHolyoke, MassachusettsTaunton, MassachusettsJackson, MichiganCrabtree, North CarolinaSalem, New HampshireManchester, New HampshireMays Landing, New JerseyVictor, New YorkGlen Falls, New YorkNew Hyde Park, New YorkDayton, OhioCincinnati, Ohio (at Northgate Mall)Happy Valley, OregonHouston, Texas (at Memorial City Mall)Bryan, TexasWest Jordan, UtahFairfax, VirginiaVancouver, WashingtonEau Claire, WisconsinLa Crosse, WisconsinThe-CNN-Wire 2503
