SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local doctor says even though a COVID-19 vaccine will be available soon, it will still be several months before we see the impact.Dr. Mark Sawyer, an infectious disease specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital, is on the State Advisory Board that reviews COVID-19 vaccines. He spoke to ABC 10News about the importance of getting this vaccine.“The vaccine is safe, and it works, and we absolutely need this vaccine to deal with the pandemic,” Sawyer said.However, Sawyer added a warning: “If people suddenly think that we’re out of the woods now, and stop wearing masks and distancing from each other, then we’re going to still see the kinds of numbers that we’re seeing right now.”Despite intense discussions among the FDA advisory panel regarding whether Pfizer’s vaccine is safe to use on 16- and 17-year-olds, Sawyer points to the research that was done, saying the drug was tested on individuals from that age group.“There’s no reason to think that a 16-year-old or 17-year-old is going to have a reaction that an 18-year-old is going to have. I think it’s perfectly safe,” Sawyer told ABC 10News.Sawyer also described the side effects one may feel after getting the vaccine. Sawyer said a recipient’s arm may hurt and he or she may feel under the weather. The symptoms can last up to 24 hours after you get the vaccine, but Sawyer said, “There’s no long-term consequences.”As San Diego waits for the county to announce their vaccination plan, informing people when and where they can get it, Sawyer said the bottom line is “everyone can feel comfortable in going out to get the vaccine when it’s their turn.” 1641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A massive water main break in North Park Tuesday morning flooded streets as the neighborhood continues to cope with issues related to the breaks. According to the city, a 30-inch cast iron water main transmission line broke around 6 a.m. on Ray Street at Capps Street. Currently, the City of San Diego is in the process of replacing all cast iron pipes. After that process is complete, the city says it will assess concrete mains. Crews hope to have all cast iron pipes removed by 2023. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new technology platform launched this week is making it easier for restaurants, hotels, and caterers to donate food to those facing hunger in San Diego County.The new platform, MealConnect, was unveiled by Feeding San Diego. CEO Vince Hall says the free platform will help rescue the more than 14 million pounds of food going into San Diego landfills every year. "This is an issue that is compelling, it is serious, and it is urgent because hunger is debilitating," said Hall. Restaurants and food service providers use the MealConnect app to submit a food donation. It's then picked up by a volunteer and delivered to a nearby charity. Nancy Kane is one of the first San Diego volunteers to take part in the program. "It's flexible, it's not that hard to do, I can do it on my own time. I love it; it's one more thing I can do to make a difference," said Kane.Volunteers receive training and equipment to ensure food is delivered safely. They can choose their delivery hours and can accept or decline requests via text message. MealConnect enables food donors of all sizes, such as hotels, meeting and event planners, restaurants, farmers market vendors, and convenience stores to post surplus food to the system.Feeding San Diego received a ,500 grant from the Walmart Foundation to support the launch of MealConnect in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of recent restaurant closures are highlighting some of the struggles owners are facing as the industry grapples with major shifts in the way it does business.Last month, Brooklyn Girl in Mission Hills and Urban Solace in North Park both closed their doors. Facebook posts thanked long-time customers but gave few answers as to why.Industry experts think it's a sign of bigger problems in the hospitality sector, as rising costs and changes in people's behavior are combining in a "perfect storm" of problems.RELATED: El Pollo Grill to open new location in Chula Vista"These are seasoned operators, people who have been in business for a long time. And for one reason or another they're just stumped," says Stephen Zolezzi, the President and CEO of the Food and Beverage Association of San Diego.His association tracks the total number of licenses given out in San Diego to food and beverage vendors. Zolezzi says over the last three years, there's been an increase of 300 licenses. The prices of rent, insurance, and goods have all gone up in the past year. His members say diners now would rather go to multiple places once than become regular, dependable customers at a few spots."You could be doing everything right," he says. Zolezzi says these apps can charge restaurants as much as 30% of the total bill, plus delivery fees, to carry their food. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A priest in the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego was suspended Tuesday as church officials investigate allegations of sexual misconduct with a girl in the 1990s.Father Justin Langille, 65, initially faced the claim in the mid-1990s for an act which allegedly occurred with a female teenager earlier in the decade, according to a news release from the diocese.The case was examined in 1995 and 2002, but the diocese concluded that the allegation was unsubstantiated after Langille passed a polygraph test, church officials said.Last month, the case was brought before the diocese’s Independent Review Board as part of its process to review files about the sexual abuse of minors by clergy.“I felt strongly that even older, previously decided cases involving currently serving priests would benefit from being examined by the Independent Review Board,” said Bp. McElroy. “The voice of the laity needs to be heard on these matters and the independent board, with members that include attorneys, criminal investigators, psychologists and a clergy abuse victim, provides the diocese with exceptionally valuable guidance and expertise.”An investigator revealed significant new information that substantially undermined the credibility of Langille’s denials, the diocese said. Church officials did not provide details about the information.The diocese spokesperson did not have information about whether San Diego Police had been contacted.If the Independent Review Board determines the accusation is not credible, Langille may be returned to ministry, according to the diocese.Langille has not had a full-time assignment in the diocese since 2013, officials said.
