(KGTV) -- A South Bay woman is mourning the death from COVID-19 of her boyfriend and her 'second chance' at love.Derik Williams started feeling sick in early July."Felt very fatigued, no cough," said Carol Althoff.Five days later, Althoff, his girlfriend of four years, brought him to the ER."Outside, they took his temperature and it was 101°.Williams was admitted and put on a sleep apnea CPAP device to help him breathe. A few days later, she got a call."He called home and he was his old self. 'Hi, babe, how are you?'" said Althoff.She was expecting a call the next day about him coming home.Instead, a doctor called about Williams needing to be placed on a ventilator. She talked to Willliams on the phone."We cried together. We said our 'I love you.' It was extremely emotional," said Althoff.A few days later, William - a father of 4 and a grandfather - passed away, days before his 55th birthday. Althoff, whose first husband died of cancer, says she didn't think she would find love again until she met Williams a few years later."Derek was loving. He was happy and so giving," said Althoff.She says the Air Force veteran was always volunteering, whether it was for The Rock Church, Stand Down, or soup kitchens."It was part of who he was. He wanted to be a better person, better than the person he was yesterday," said Althoff.As for where the coronavirus came from, Althoff isn't sure. She says Williams was diligent about masks and mostly went to the grocery store and his work, an aerospace company where he worked as a forklift operator. Althoff is making an urgent plea to COVID-19 seriously."Please, wear your mask. If not for you, then for the person you may be encounter," said Althoff.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with expenses.Williams did suffer from underlying conditions, including a heart condition and diabetes.The Rock Church issued the following statement:"We are deeply saddened at the loss of Derik Williams. From serving on our hospitality team to greeting guests Derik was known for his infectious smile, joyful spirit and desire to help others know Christ. As people shared their thoughts and memories of Derik, one thing was clear Derik had a huge heart in being intentional about checking in on his friends/team members. (KGTV) -- A small plane believed to be heading to San Diego crashed in southwest Las Vegas Thursday morning.KTNV, ABC 10News' Scripps sister station in Las Vegas, reported the Clark County Fire Department and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of a small plane going down at around 9:30 a.m. local time near Raven Avenue and Hinson Street, several miles southwest of the Las Vegas Strip.The plane burst into flames following the crash.The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told KTNV there were two people in the twin-engine Cessna 310 at the time of the crash. KTVN, citing the Clark County Fire Department (CCFD), reported the two unidentified occupants died.An FAA official told ABC 10News the plane departed North Las Vegas Airport and its end destination was listed as Gillespie Field in San Diego. The plane had reportedly taken off from the North Las Vegas airport at 9:29 a.m. and crashed at 9:38 a.m.CCFD said witnesses reported the plane flying low before hearing a crash after it disappeared from sight.Bruce Langston, who was nearby at the time of the crash, described hearing an "awful" sound and a giant "fireball" when the plane struck the wall of a construction site.The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and FAA are investigating the incident. (KGTV) -- A Marine with a Camp Pendleton-based unit died and a search is underway for eight others from that group following a training accident off the coast of San Clemente Island, U.S. Marine officials said.Officials said the incident happened around 5:45 p.m. Thursday during a routine training exercise involving the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, I Marine Expeditionary Force, and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, according to officials.An amphibious assault vehicle with 15 Marines and one sailor inside reported taking water during the exercise, officials said.Seven members of the group were rescued and taken to the hospital, but officials confirmed another -- a Marine -- died at Scripps La Jolla Hospital. Two individuals, both Marines, were in critical and stable conditions, respectively.The five other members have returned to their assigned ship.The eight members — seven Marines and one sailor — remained missing as of Friday afternoon and were being searched for by the Navy's USS John Finn, three Navy helicopters, several smaller Navy vessels and a U.S. Coast Guard ship and helicopter, Marine officials said.Officials say that all families of the Marines and the sailor involved have been notified."We have not moved into a recovery operation," Gen. (KGTV) - A Pennsylvania groom is accused of sexually assaulting one of his wife’s bridesmaids days before his wedding, which occurred as scheduled. Daniel Carney, 28, is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of an unconscious person and indecent assault at the Smithfield resort Aug. 30. Police said the assault reportedly happened after Carney and the bridesmaid were drinking alcohol. The bridesmaid told officers she blacked out, and when she regained consciousness her clothes were removed and Carney was fondling her. Surveillance video shows Carney pulling the woman into the men’s locker room, police said. According to police, the assault stopped when the bride caught him, but the wedding went on as planned Sept. 1. Court documents show investigators listened in on a call between Carney and his accuser, KABC reported.
