CHICAGO, Ill. -- Karate is well-known for teaching discipline, but its focus on core strength, balance and confidence-building could be effective for something else – helping people living with brain disorders such as Parkinson’s. Twice a week, inside a karate dojo in Chicago, students learn the fundamental movements of Kihon technique. “We did something called KoGo Kumite which is partner work, working on rhythm, working on distancing, working on timing and working on technique.” But for Fonseca Martial Arts head instructor Brian Ramrup this is a class like none other he’s taught before. “These guys all have Parkinson's,” said Ramrup. More than 1 million Americans have Parkinson’s disease. The progressive neurological disorder affects balance and movement. Tremors and stiffness are common symptoms, but the disease can also lead to depression and anxiety. For Sonia Vargas, diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005, it started with tingling in her legs. “It felt like I was carrying some piece of some heavy equipment on my legs,” said Vargas. A year ago, on the recommendation of her neurologist, Vargas joined the Chicago-area martial arts academy.“These guys are learning how to go to the ground safely, how to break falls,” said Ramrup. It’s a skill that can help avoid injuries for patients who begin to lose balance and fall frequently. It’s part of a program studying the potential for karate to slow the progression of the disorder. “When I went to the first class, the next day, I felt a difference. It was so remarkable,” said Vargas. Dr. Jori Fleisher is the principal investigator of the study and a neurologist at Rush University Medical Center. She says initial results are promising. “We found clinically significant changes in quality of life which is huge,” said Fleisher. “It's a great exercise covering a lot of the areas: balance, core strength, big large amplitude movements when people are kind of tiny or smaller, stiffer. They're sort of fighting back actively against that.” Camaraderie is also a key component. The group now competes together, cheering for one another on good days and bad. “The exercises help tremendously the competitions. I mean really gets you going. I mean my first competition I got I got the orange belt,” said Vargas. The year-long randomized program concludes next month, and Dr. Fleisher remains cautiously optimistic about the outcome.“I don't think karate will be the end all be all. TAMPA, Fla. — Three generations of one Tampa Bay family say they wound up in oncoming traffic after a blowout involving a newer tire.Steve Nelson says he purchased four new tires last November, but they had just 300 miles on them when he hit the road with his son and grandson in June. The trio left Tampa for a cross country camping trip to Yosemite in California — an adventure that took a scary turn on the drive back home.Steve said he lost control of the truck after the front driver's side tire blew out on I-40 near Gallup New Mexico. “We wound up in the oncoming lane dodging semi-trucks,” he said. Steve a retired insurance manager showed us the invoice for over 0 that he paid to replace the two front tires in New Mexico. The paperwork indicates the tires he bought new last November had about 4,200 miles on them. Normally tires don't need replacing before 30,000 miles or more.During the trip home, Steve stopped at a tire shop in Irvin, Texas and asked that they check the back tires. That Dodge dealer replaced the rear tires and wrote on the invoice that those tires had broken cords. Steve made a call for action after he says Mavis, the shop where he bought the tires, denied his claim for a refund. ABC Action News asked Chris Brazzeal, the owner of Brazzeal Tire in Tampa, to examine the original tires that came off the pickup. Chris showed us bubbling and rubber separation on two of the tires. “That is a clear indication the tire is now coming apart,” said Brazzeal. We contacted both Mavis and the tire manufacturer Vee Rubber. “Mavis is committed to providing safe and high-quality services to our customers. We have been in contact with the customer regarding this issue and have reached out to the tire manufacturer on his behalf to facilitate a resolution,” the company wrote.After we got involved a representative from Vee Rubber flew to Tampa, examined the tires and admitted one of them was defective. CINCINNATI -- The man who told police he was a missing boy from Illinois when he was found in Newport, Kentucky on Wednesday, is now being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center in Ohio on an FBI detainer, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office. President Donald Trump said tonight that he has signed an executive order to shut down the use of Chinese-based social media applications TikTok and WeChat in 45 days.The order specifically prohibits any U.S. transactions with TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, starting on Sept. 20.Trump cited privacy concerns for taking the action against the social media networks.TikTok in particular has gained popularity among younger Americans in recent months for its short, entertaining video clips. The TikTok community has often been critical of Trump. Earlier in the summer, users of TikTok organized by reserving tickets to Trump’s rally in Tulsa, which failed to draw the type of crowds the Trump campaign expected.Trump said in his order that WeChat and TikTok “automatically captures vast swaths of information from its users -- threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday the state's formula that will determine which school districts can reopen to students in September.The formula will be implemented between August 1 and August 7, based on COVID-19 data in each region. Schools in regions in Phase Four of their reopening at that time will be able to reopen to students if the region's daily infection rate remains 5% or lower over a 14-day average.After August 1, schools will close if their regional infection rate is greater than 9% over a seven-day average.Once reopening, schools must follow guidelines specific to their districts. The New York State Health Department has released its own guidelines, which will be used by districts to develop plans.The health department's guidelines include masks and PPE whenever students or staff cannot maintain social distancing (six feet of separation).
