(KGTV) - Hundreds of La Mesa neighbors came out to clean up and board up businesses Sunday morning.Albert's Fresh Mexican Food owner Albert Garzon said he saw his business get destroyed Saturday night, "there's nothing you can do about it but just watch, it was just so much chaos and just people running left and right."He said when he came back his business was being boarded up by volunteers. "Under the circumstances with the COVID to make matters worse for all these poor business owners that are barely making ends meet before this even started," Garzon said.The entire La Mesa Springs Shopping Center was covered in boards, provided by a local construction company, Meram Building."Before I even got here my business was clean, it was so many volunteers and I was, literally I had tears in my eyes," Chintu Patel, Owner of Menchie's, said.Both Patel and Garzon were thankful to see support, their heartbreak replaced with gratitude and a sense of perseverance."What the people of La Mesa have come out to do for their community is priceless and that's why we're keeping strong and we're La Mesa strong," Garzon said.Neighbors swept up glass, threw out trash and did anything that was needed. About a dozen formed a human assembly line moving merchandise so Play It Again Sports could secure their building."Yesterday there were signs there was rock throwing there was vulgarity, there was accusations against the police, look at today, today there's brooms, there's shovels." Volunteer Mike Raleigh said.An officer said he saw off duty officers in plain clothes helping in the clean up.One neighbor said the reason people became violent Saturday was because that is the only way they felt their message could be heard or inflicting as much pain as they've felt through racism in their lives. 1822
Let the "Hey girl, let me take you to the moon" memes commence.Blue Steel-flashing heartthrob Ryan Gosling reteams with his "La La Land" director, Damien Chazelle, for "First Man," an intense and blistering biopic of Neil Armstrong in his grueling, often lonely drive to become the first man to set foot on the satellite that has coaxed humankind to visit since the first caveman looked upward in the night sky.If the movie's intent is to show just how difficult and arduous the voyage was, it succeeds. Far from the smooth, fast-paced rides of the Oscar darling Chezelle's previous work, including "Whiplash," "First Man" is a meticulous, visually stunning 360-degree look at the space race, honing in on Armstrong's personal perspective, as well as that of his dutiful yet understandably resentful wife, Janet Shearon (Claire Foy). The upshot: To accomplish great things, great sacrifices must be made. This is no hagiography. Gosling's portrait of Armstrong is that of an often callous, unfeeling workaholic who often shunted off the affections of his family in favor of other needs -- sometimes work, other times petulant solitude. The same indifference distanced him from colleagues and superiors. Gosling's smoldering intensity is an unnervingly convincing a replication of Armstrong's demeanor.The movie soars when it lifts off the ground, allowing the talented visual effects team to flex their muscles and show off bar-raising shots of test pilots screaming at Mach 3, rocket launches piercing the stratosphere and especially in the climactic payoff, as man takes his small step and mankind his great leap.Chezelle sometimes loses grip on his narrative momentum as his story meanders among the numerous test missions, bureaucratic disputes and training missions Armstrong and his colleagues had to endure in order to reach toward the heights their collective obsession drove them toward.A ruthless edit could have trimmed away some of the ancillary material and reshaped "First Man" into a leaner, more economical story flow that would have been truer to the spirit of the journey rather than wallowing in documentarian style detail. More story and less history would have made "First Man" seem like more of a thrill ride than homework. LAS VEGAS, Nevada — In the era of the "Me Too" movement and against a backdrop of sexual misconduct in the school district, a YouTube video has some wondering whether a candidate for the Board of Trustees is sending the wrong message on social media. Her video is called "How to Be Sexy."It's been viewed more than a million times, but now it's getting serious scrutiny as the self-described non-traditional candidate is running for school board trustee. Watch the full interview with Danielle Ford in the video player at the end of this story."I initially searched for the videos because I started hearing other employees discussing it and saying they were kind of concerned," said Elena Rodriguez, CCSD Student Services Division. Elena Rodriguez has worked for the district for decades. She's an outspoken advocate for change and accountability and regularly attends and speaks at school board meetings."As difficult as it is for women to climb the ladder of administration and so forth, and the issues that we've had in the past with employees being accused of sexual harassment and discrimination and so forth, I think it sends the wrong message," Rodriguez said.Danielle Ford isn't shying away from her videos, but she does want to explain them. "As far as that particular video and the messaging of sexiness, I very much believe in empowering women to love their bodies and to be proud of who they are."Danielle dropped out of high school when she became pregnant at age 17 and got her G.E.D. She says this video and others posted on her Young Moms Club website are designed to reach out to other teen moms who face the same stigma and challenges she did when she was a CCSD student.Getting that message out is a serious effort for Ford. Drawing from her own personal experience she takes on the meaning of teen motherhood in the TedX talk from 2013."If we can offer support and encouragement to these girls rather than criticism and judgment, then we can all positively affect the lives of over 10 million people."Drawing from her marketing experience, Danielle says she has to be creative to ensure teen moms get her message. "And although I wouldn't use that same tagline and picture if I'm talking to different people, it worked! Because that video itself has over a million views. And it brought you here," Ford added.Danielle's message to feel confident and powerful at any age as a woman is strong. But the context of that video ("How to Be Sexy") is how to get and keep a man. Some are questioning if that's a good message to send to young girls. According to Ford, "Girls do want that! We all do! We all want a partner."Though she posted these videos years before knowing she'd run for public office, she stands behind them all. Including a video entitled "Why I Let My 10-Year-Old Daughter Date." But as you'll hear in the video below, that "date" was really just a family outing to Chuck E. Cheese.Ford said, "I feel like it's a really good thing to teach her now what a date is and how to be treated by boys."She also has a video on "How to Get a Boyfriend... It's Seriously Just Like Shopping.""When you watch the videos, the common theme is that we need to empower kids instead of criticizing them for having thoughts or whatever it is," Ford added.But Rodriguez says there's a better way to empower young women. "For example, towards education--higher education--technical schools. There are many other ways to empower women versus just talking about how you can be sexy."Long-time Trustee Carolyn Edwards, who's terming out of the spot Ford is running for, says trustees must live up to a higher standard and that includes social media.Regarding her "How to Be Sexy" video, Danielle told us, "I wouldn't make that video--based on what I've heard--again, but I'm also not going to take it down."In fact, she's got a link to her Young Moms Club videos on her candidate website. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - New research at UC San Diego has found that breast milk does not spread the Coronavirus."I think it's safe to say that breast milk is safe, that donor milk is safe, and that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks," says Dr. Lars Bode, the Director of the UC San Diego Mommy’s Milk Human Milk Research Biorepository, which conducted the study. "We don't have any risks identified at this point."A preliminary research letter, published in August in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found "No replication-competent virus was detectable in any sample."The study analyzed multiple breast milk samples from women who had recently given birth and been infected with SARS-COVID-2, the disease that causes coronavirus. Among 64 samples from 18 different women, they found nothing that could transmit the virus.READ THE REPORTThe Center now has around 400 women enrolled in the study to ensure the results play out over extensive scale testing."Having the information and knowing what the risks are and what you might expect and being prepared for that, it certainly can help reduce anxieties related to having these types of infections," says Dr. Christina Chambers, a pediatrician at UC San Diego.In addition to looking for virus transmission, the researchers are also looking into whether breast milk can transfer antibodies from mother to baby and help the child gain immunity without a vaccine."When mom gets infected, she produces the antibodies," says Dr. Bode. "It's not just in her plasma. It also gets handed over to the milk, and we've seen this for many other diseases as well. There's some act of protection to antibodies and other components in human milk that protect the infant directly."Dr. Bode says they may be able to find a way to synthesize the compounds containing the antibodies so other adults can get their benefit without having to take breast milk away from infants.UC San Diego's MotherToBaby Pregnancy Studies is also running a research project on Coronavirus's effects on pregnant women and babies still in the womb.
