The Wallace's giant bee is as big as a human thumb. That might be frightening to most people, but scientists were delighted when a team of researchers recently found it in Indonesia. It's the largest bee in the world, and scientists feared it might be extinct -- until now.A group of researchers made a stunning "rediscovery" of the elusive critter and took the first photos and video of a living Wallace's giant bee on January 25.The team -- composed of natural history photographer Clay Bolt, entomologist Eli Wyman, behavioral ecologist Simon Robson and ornithologist Glenn Chilton -- spent years studying the bee and slogged around in humid Indonesia forests for days before stumbling upon one.The rediscovery has renewed hope that more of the region's forests are home to the rare species. Three people were killed and nine injured when a vehicle was struck Tuesday by two Long Island Rail Road trains going in opposite directions, according to MTA Long Island Rail Road president Phillip Eng.The vehicle reportedly drove around railroad crossing gates in Westbury, New York, Eng said. The three dead were in the vehicle, Eng said, and the injured included seven train passengers, a conductor, and an engineer. The injured were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries, Eng said."This is a ... very tragic cautionary tale that you just don't try to beat the train. It's not, it's not going to work," Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said. The first strike came from an eastbound train leaving the Westbury station and carrying about 100 people, Eng said. Then a westbound train, traveling at a higher speed and carrying about 800 people, struck the vehicle. According to Eng, the front two train cars of that train derailed and struck the platform at Westbury station.About 200 feet of track has been damaged, along with the third rail, and the Westbury platform, Eng said."We're gonna work through the night and we're gonna work to restore service as soon as possible," Eng said, adding that he expected morning service to be impacted. 1268

The Trump administration announced Monday that it will being formally withdrawing the US from the Paris climate accord, the first step in a year-long process to leave the landmark agreement to reduce emissions of planet-warming gases."Today the United States began the process to withdraw from the Paris Agreement," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement. "Per the terms of the Agreement, the United States submitted formal notification of its withdrawal to the United Nations. The withdrawal will take effect one year from delivery of the notification." 578

The White House has flatly rejected the House Judiciary Committee's request for documents in its sweeping investigation into possible obstruction of justice and abuses of power, accusing the Democratically-controlled committee of seeking to recreate the special counsel investigation to harass the President.White House Counsel Pat Cipollone sent a letter Wednesday to House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler arguing that the committee's request for documents was illegitimate."It appears that the Committee's inquiry is designed, not to further a legitimate legislative purpose, but rather to conduct a pseudo law enforcement investigation on matters that were already the subject of the Special Counsel's long-running investigation and are outside the constitutional authority of the legislative branch," Cipollone wrote."Congressional investigations are intended to obtain information to aid in evaluating potential legislation, not to harass political opponents or to pursue an unauthorized 'do-over' of exhaustive law enforcement investigations conducted by the Department of Justice," he added. The letter adds yet another layer to the escalating feud between the White House and House Democrats over their numerous investigations into the Trump administration and President Donald Trump's businesses and finances.Trump has already declared that his administration will fight all of the House subpoenas — several of which are now being fought in court. The Judiciary Committee voted last week to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt for not providing the full Mueller report and evidence and the Ways and Means Committee has issued a subpoena for Trump's personal and business tax returns.Nadler and other House Democratic leaders are now raising the prospect they will hold numerous administration officials in contempt at the same time as part of a package to highlight the Trump administration's stonewalling of Congress. Some Democrats are also talking about invoking Congress' so-called inherent contempt powers to fine or jail those who defy congressional subpoenas.Cipollone's letter, which was first 2133
