ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Rare succulents grown along California's coastlines are under attack from poachers. Last week three South Korean nationals were charged with attempting to illegally export to Asia more than 0,000 in live Dudleya succulent plants. Federal authorities say the men pulled the plants out of the ground at remote state parks in Northern California and then brought them to a Vista nursery operated by one of the men. "What your seeing now, which is really detrimental, is that people are actually making so much money off of this stuff in some cases, that they're going out to habitat and just wholesale taking everything, just wreaking havoc," said Tony Gurnoe, Director of Horticulture at San Diego Botanic Garden.Part of the mission at San Diego Botanic Garden is to conserve rare and endangered plants and their ecosystems to preserve biodiversity."The natural world is under a lot of stress right now," says Ari Novy, President & CEO of San Diego Botanic Garden. Novy says the rare California succulents are a coveted treasure in several Asian countries. "Unfortunately in Asia there are a lot of really wonderful plant collectors, but there's a small minority that will go to any length to get plants they don't have, including imperiling plants in the wild and violating the law," said Novy. Two of the defendants have since fled the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. If convicted on all counts, the defendants face up to 10 years in federal prison. The stolen succulents are now being reestablished in their habitat by California Plant Rescue. 1609

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - An Encinitas woman was caught off guard when an intruder squeezed through a doggy door at her home.Just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, Lexie Linberg was in her upstairs bedroom, located just off Coast Highway 101, when she got an alert from her Ring doorbell camera. A man was knocking at her door. Thinking it was a delivery, Linberg didn't answer. Moments later, she got another alert: someone was in her back yard."I heard the doggy door flap. My dog was next to me, so I knew I had a problem. I ran over to the balcony, dropped down, and saw feet going through my doggie door and I started screaming," said Linberg.Surveillance video shows same man at her door walk into her back yard. He took off his jacket before squeezing through her 10-inch-wide, 20-inch-tall doggy door. "Complete panic actually," said Linberg. Linberg's panic was quickly pushed aside by adrenaline. "I yelled a lot of profanities, told him to get out of my house," said Linberg.Linberg, who has taken self defense classes, then armed herself. She declined to tell us what that weapon was."Anger. I was mad. I wanted to get the person that was coming to hurt me," said Linberg.Next to her was Stella, her 6-year-old Poodle, trained as a guard dog."Racing down the stairs with my dog, absolutely going for him at this point," said Linberg.Linberg raced into a downstairs room, just in time to see the man's feet in the dog door. This time, he was on his way out. She gave chase down the street. He got away, but not before cameras caught a good look."He needs to be caught. It was obvious he knew what he was doing. He has done this before and will do it again," said Linberg. If you have any information on the case, you're asked to call the Encinitas sheriff's station at 760-966-3500. 1789

ESTERO, Fla. — A Florida man saved his dog from certain death after he wrestled an alligator that snatched the puppy and dragged the pooch into a pond."He just came out like a missile," 74-year-old Richard Wilbanks of Estero said of the gator that attacked Gunner, his cavalier King Charles spaniel.Wilbanks jumped into the water, pried open the gator's mouth and freed Gunner from the gator's jaws. The rescue was caught on camera by the Florida Wildlife Federation.Wilbanks told CNN that his hands were "just chewed up," but Gunner is doing OK."We live on a shared landscape," Florida Wildlife Federation spokeswoman Meredith Budd told WINK-TV in Fort Myers. "We don't just want to tolerate wildlife, but, rather, we want to thrive with wildlife on a shared landscape."Gunner now takes walks on a leash and away from the water's edge. This story was originally published by Peter Burke on WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida 929

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County’s largest ice-skating facility is closing for good.Officials with Ice-Plex Escondido announced Thursday that the facility, located on 555 N. Tulip St., is shutting down effective immediately.Since 1995, Ice-Plex was a destination for San Diegans looking for a place to ice skate or play hockey. The facility, with its two Olympic-sized ice rinks, offered classes and public ice skating sessions that ran 7 days a week.In a statement on their website, Ice-Plex officials said, “This was not an easy decision. Our hockey and skating communities have been strong partners to us throughout the years, and we have worked hard over the last few months to find an alternative way to keep the facility open. Unfortunately, that solution has not emerged.”Officials said the facility has been operating “at a substantial loss” in the past few years, and they’ve struggled to maintain the equipment and other systems needed to keep the facility running. The pandemic-related closure also affected the facility’s ability to stay afloat, and despite numerous efforts, officials could not find ways to keep the Ice-Plex open.“We close our doors with a heavy heart and would like to extend our deepest thanks to our athletes, customers, staff and volunteers, who have been responsible for creating a welcome and competitive environment at Ice-Plex. You have brought joy to our lives. Your dedication to sport, community and individual achievement will not end with Ice-Plex,” officials said.Read the full Ice-Plex statement 1560
