ANAHEIM, Calif. (CNS) -- An online petition urging a delay of the scheduled reopening of the Disneyland Resort due to the risk of guests contracting coronavirus has acquired more than 26,000 signatures as of this weekend. The change.org petition was started by a user called "We Are Anonymous" and states that because COVID-19 cases are rising, Disneyland Resort is "endangering cast members and guests to be exposed to (coronavirus)" with its planned reopening of Disneyland and California Adventure on July 17. The Downtown Disney shopping district is scheduled to reopen July 9."There are more cases now than when the parks closed on March 13th, 2020," the petition said. "Health Officials have stated that the 2nd wave of Covid-19 will be worse. So reopening before the 2nd wave even hits us is irresponsible and greedy."RELATED: Disneyland announces plans to begin phased openingIn a blog post on the Disney parks web site, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pamela Hymel said on May 5, "...our focus remains on the health and safety of the entire Disney community -- including the wellbeing of the cast members who are caring for and securing our parks and resorts during the closure."We have already implemented a number of enhanced health and safety measures, such as increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfection in work areas, adjusting practices to promote physical distancing, and providing cast with access to necessary PPE, including face coverings."Hymel also said physical distancing and a reduction in the number of guests allowed in the parks and guests undergoing temperature screenings before entry are among the safety measures being implemented.UC Irvine associate professor of population health and disease prevention, Andrew Noymer, told the Los Angeles Times the risk of spreading the virus at Disneyland can be reduced by following these measures.RELATED: When your favorite San Diego theme parks, attractions plan to reopen"I don't think Disneyland reopening is an absolute catastrophe, but it's all in the execution, Noymer said. "It won't be, verbatim, the Disneyland we knew last summer."Noymer did acknowledge there are still risks, even with safety protocols in effect.Even assuming everyone masks, how do you eat cotton candy or a snowcone through a mask?" Noymer told The Times. "There will be some unmasking, at least partly."The petition, which was started June 11, calls for Disneyland to reschedule any park opening to an undisclosed later date "when cases of Covid-19 drop and health officials state it is safer for everyone but to still practice social distancing." 2611
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – President Donald Trump is projected to win the state of Alaska, according to The Associated Press.Winning the state gives Trump three additional electoral votes, bringing him to a total of 217, still far behind Joe Biden. The AP still projects Biden will win the presidency, since he is on track to finish with at least 290 electoral votes. A candidate needs 270 to win. With the contest in Alaska called, the only two states that remain up in the air in the presidential race are Georgia and North Carolina, based on AP projections. Regardless of which way they sway, it likely won’t alter who takes the White House.Along with the presidency being called, the AP also projects that Alaska’s Republican senator, Dan Sullivan, will win reelection to the U.S. Senate.Sullivan's win brings to the GOP to 50 seats in the Senate, while the Democrats have 48. The Senate majority will all come down to who wins the two runoff races in Georgia. Residents in the state will vote on Jan. 5.Additionally, the AP projects Republican Don Young will win reelection to U.S. House in Alaska's at-large congressional district. 1136
Army officials at Fort Hood confirmed the identity of a soldier who was a suspect in the disappearance of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday morning during a confrontation with police.Officials with the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) confirmed the suspect who died Wednesday morning was Aaron Robinson. They also confirmed a second suspect — the estranged wife of a Fort Hood soldier — is also in custody in the Bell County Jail.CID declined to identify the name of the civilian suspect because it was "not in their jurisdiction."CID officials said Robinson and the civilian suspect are currently the only two suspects connected with the case. Officials said social media reports of a third suspect in the case were "irresponsible."The press conference took place a day after Guillen's family claimed that the missing soldier had reported to them before she disappeared that she had been sexually harassed. While CID said Thursday that an investigation into those allegations remains open, they have not yet found credible evidence of harassment.CID also refuted the family's claim that Robinson had harassed Guillen and that Robinson was Guillen's superior officer.Guillen went missing from Fort Hood on April 22. It wasn't until late June that the Army said it suspected foul play in connection with Guillen's death.Army officials reported earlier this week that human remains were found in connection with the search. Maj. Gen. Scott Efflandt, III said Thursday that the remains have not yet been confirmed to be those of Guillen. 1596
As Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell awaits trial, newly released documents provide insight into the charges she's facing.A deposition from 2016 has been made public that alleges Maxwell was a recruiter for Epstein's underage sex ring.Testimony from Virginia Giuffre, one of Maxwell's alleged victims, implicates Prince Andrew and former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. Both the prince and Richardson have denied the allegations against them.Giuffre also reports seeing former President Bill Clinton on Epstein's private island. When she asked Epstein about why Clinton was there, she said Epstein told her that Clinton owed him a favor.Clinton has previously denied ever going to Epstein's island.Giuffre also said one of the men involved in Epstein's sex ring was a "large hotel chain owner."The in the court filings, Maxwell and her attorney portray Giuffre as unreliable, pointing to errors in certain information she provided. 950
As a variant strain of the coronavirus spreads through the United Kingdom, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, said in an interview on ABC News on Tuesday that it’s possible the variant is in the US."That's certainly possible I mean, when you have this amount of spread within a place like the UK, that you really need to assume that it's here already, and certainly is not the dominant strain, but I would not be surprised at all if it is already here," said Fauci on ABC News. The variant strain has fueled lockdowns and fears in the UK. It also has prompted much of the world to cut off travel to the UK. Health officials fear that the variant strain spreads more easily. The United States has not cut travel between the two countries. Fauci does not expect that to be necessary.“That's not that's not really in the cards right now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the requirement of testing is something that is being actively considered right now," Fauci said. The CDC reminded the public that viruses often mutate. The CDC added that it’s investigating why this version differs from the disease caused by other versions that are currently circulating. As travel remains permitted between the two nations, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo criticized officials for not cutting off travel. Cuomo did note that several airlines began testing passengers arriving in New York from the UK for the virus."Right now, this variant in the U.K. is getting on a plane and flying to JFK. Right now today,” Cuomo said. “One-hundred twenty countries require a test. We don't. Other European countries have done a ban. We haven't. And today that variant is getting on a plane and landing at JFK. How many times in life do you have to make the same mistake before you learn. Be one of the 120 countries that requires a test before you get on a plane to come to the U.S. This is the mistake we made."The United Kingdom has implemented some of its strongest lockdowns since the onset of the pandemic in recent days. While not much is known about the mutated strain of the virus, it is believed to spread more easily."To our international friends and partners, I want to say very frankly that we understand your concerns and I hope everybody can see that as soon as we were briefed in UK government on the the fast transmissibility of this new strain, that I think 3:15 on Friday afternoon, we lodged all the necessary information with the World Health Organization and we took prompt and decisive action the very next day to curb the spread of the new variant," UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. 2635
