Many parents have debated about how much screen time is too much and what’s best as school comes to a close and we hit the summer break. Now, some experts say that thinking screen time is bad might be old-school thinking. Video games have changed a lot since the days of Atari Pong. Now, more than ever, they’re designed to keep the consumer engaged. One of their biggest targets: adolescents. "Video games have classically been more of a problem because once you really engage that reward system, it’s frustrating and tough to pull kids off," said psychiatrist Joel Stoddard.He said that’s because a child’s reward system is stronger than a child’s control system. And there’s a difference in the way the brain reacts to video games than it does to the online schooling. "For most of the video games that kids are really into, like Fortnite and Zelda: Breath of the Wild, those games are designed to really engage their reward systems and keep their attention. So, that’s a little bit different than online school, which is not really designed in the same way to grab hold of those areas in the brain that are involved in like ‘this is what I want’," said Stoddard. "When kids are engaged with a teacher or with academic content online, that serves a very different purpose than playing a video game or having a zoom call to socialize with a peer," said Jennifer Walsh-Rurak, Vice President of the Northeast Region of Fusion Academy. That interaction, whether it’s playing video games with friends online, or FaceTiming, is better than no interaction. "In this day and age where they can’t naturally go outside and engage with kids in the neighborhood, we don’t want to discourage them from having that social peer interaction which we know is so critically important," said Walsh-Rurak. Stoddard says the extra time on the screens, isn’t all bad. It can actually be beneficial to an extent."The brain gets better at doing what it does so, when we’re interacting with screens all of our visual and screen areas are getting better. If you’re gaming, maybe some of those special attention and those reward areas get more sensitive, if we’re doing social media we’re going to be highly attuned to what does that ‘like mean, what does it not mean’. The brain just gets better at what it does," said Stoddard. However, it’s important to think about what else the kid could be doing instead of playing on the screen. "We do know that video games can suck kiddos in so they’re not actually having normative typical social interactions. They might gain weight, for example, and have disrupted sleep. And those have that sort of knock-on effects," said Stoddard. "I think proactively before it gets to that point, ensuring that kids have time built into their day where they plan to be outside maybe walking the dog, engaging with a family member in a conversation, reading a book. In March 2016, a man claiming to be a US Army captain stationed in Syria reached out to a Japanese woman on an international site for digital pen pals.Within weeks, their relationship grew into an internet romance with the man sending daily emails in English that she translated via Google. The man who called himself Terry Garcia asked for money -- lots of it -- from the woman identified as FK in federal court documents. Over 10 months, she sent him a total of 0,000 that she borrowed from friends, her ex-husband and other relatives to make her love interest happy.But in reality, Garcia did not exist. It was all an international online scam ran by two Nigerian men in the Los Angeles area with the help of associates in their home country and other nations, federal officials say.And Thursday, US prosecutors charged 80 people -- mostly Nigerians -- in the widespread conspiracy that defrauded at least million from businesses and vulnerable elderly women.Of those, 17 people have been arrested in the US so far and federal investigators are trying to track down the rest in Nigeria and other nations."We believe this is one of the largest cases of its kind in US history," US Attorney Nick Hanna said.A plan to smuggle diamondsThe whirlwind online romance between FK and Garcia was all conducted on a Yahoo email address with no phone calls. One said he was a Red Cross diplomat who could get the diamonds shipped to FK, court documents show.Shortly after, another man who claimed to work for a shipping company asked FK for money to ensure the package was not inspected at customs, the complaint alleges. Requests for additional money kept coming, with the fraudsters citing different reasons each time on why the package was stuck at customs."FK estimates that she made 35 to 40 payments over the 10 months that she had a relationship with Garcia. During that time, the fraudster(s) emailed her as many as 10 to 15 times each day, and Garcia was asking her to make the payments, so she kept paying to accounts in Turkey, the UK and the US," the federal criminal complaint says.The loss of money has left FK angry and depressed, authorities said. "She began crying when discussing the way that these losses have affected her," the criminal complaint says.17 arrested and dozens on the runThe scams were not just limited to romance, Hanna said. They included business schemes where fraudsters hack escrow company email systems, impersonate employees and direct payments that funnel money back to themselves."In some cases, the victims thought they were communicating with US servicemen stationed overseas, when in fact, they were emailing with con men," Hanna said. "Some of the victims in this case lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in this way."Of the 80 people charged, federal authorities arrested 14 people mostly in Los Angeles, the local US Attorney's Office said Thursday. At least three other defendants were already in custody. KENSINGTON, N.H. – A father in New Hampshire killed a coyote with his bare hands after it attacked his young child on a trail Monday, according to the Kensington Police Department. Before that attack, police say they received a report of the coyote attacking a vehicle on Drinkwater Road in Hampton Falls at about 8:40 a.m. Shortly after, police say a 62-year-old woman on Hemlock Road reported that she and her dogs were attacked by a coyote.“The coyote was on her three-season porch and her two dogs had opened the sliding door and were attacked by the coyote,” wrote the department. “The two dogs retreated back into the house and the coyote attempted to get into the house. While the homeowner was fighting to keep the coyote out of the house, she was bitten.”The homeowner was treated at an area hospital and received the first series of rabies shots. She will return later in the week for a second set of shots. Her dogs were also treated. Then at about 11 a.m., police say that same coyote attacked a family walking on a trail in Exeter.
