ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County woman says she was scammed at a gas station by a performance 'worthy of an Oscar.'"We pull in and my husbands about to pump in the gas," said Alice. An ordinary trip to fill up turned eventful last month at the Shell gas station on Santa Fe Drive. "I see a man pull up in a black SUV, brand new and shiny," said Alice. Alice says a man in his 30s got out of the GMC Yukon and approached them."He was in head-to-toe designer clothes," said Alice. In the backseat was a well-dressed woman and a little girl."He says, 'Excuse me, Sir. I'm here vacationing from Dubai with my family and my wallet was stolen,'" said Alice. The man asked for some money for gas and then took out a ring."Here, take my ring. It's worth 0. I have money and plenty of jewelry at home. I just need money for gas and food," said Alice.Alice told the man to keep the ring and then had her husband put in on a pump with their credit card."I believed their story ... I put myself in their shoes. I would be devastated, and I would want someone to help me," said Alice.Days later, she learned from her cousin in Los Angeles those strangers were scammers. "I was the 4th person she knew of personally that this happened to. I was duped," said Alice."Then this past Wednesday, Alice was back at the gas station and filling up, when she saw something familiar," said Alice.It was another new GMC Yukon. Inside was a different family. She saw them talking with a young man, before pulling out a ring. "I ran over put my hand in front of the guy and said, 'You should be ashamed of yourself. This is a scam!" said Alice. She learned the family had a similar story about vacationing from Dubai. The SUV sped off, leaving behind a woman hoping others don't fall victim."It makes me angry. It's the giving season and they take advantage of that. They're actors. They played their part perfectly. They're going to get an Oscars, and I handed them the award," said Alice.Alice believes both vehicles had out-of-state license plates. She says she contacted the sheriff's department but was told this incident would likely be defined as panhandling, which isn't a crime. 2184

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The recent birth of a southern white rhino calf marks a major success milestone in the project to save the species' close genetic cousin, the northern white rhino. Only two northern whites are left in the world. Both are females incapable of reproducing.Edward, the calf born in late July, was conveived through in vitro fertilization using frozen sperm samples. "It was so exciting for everyone who worked on this project, the culmination of a very long time and a lot of work," said Dr. Barbara Durrant, a scientist who has worked on the in vitro aspect of the project.Still, Durrant says this milestone still comes during the early stage of the audacious plan. Scientists eventually hope to create northern white embryos with stem cells. Those embryos would then be transferred into female southern white rhinos, who would deliver and raise the calves. The Safari Park brought six females to its facility to act as surrogates, including Victoria, the female who gave birth to Edward.Durrant is excited to move to the next step."We're turning our efforts more toward the lab, toward figuring out how to do the in vitro fertilization and the embryo development.Durrant estimates as long as ten years until the project finally leads to a living northern white rhino calf.Edward is currently being kept in a part of the Safari Park to which the public does not have access. (KGTV) - Police are investigating an elaborate phone scam that cost an Encinitas woman ,400.Lauren Kennedy says she was driving to work Wednesday morning when she received a phone call around 8:30 a.m. She says she had just gotten off the phone with her mother when all of a sudden she was calling her back.But when she answered, it wasn’t her mother’s voice.“It was a man’s voice telling me he had abducted my mother and he was going to kill her if I didn't do exactly as he told me,” Kennedy said.Kennedy said it became so real when she heard her mother’s voice on the other line.“At that point, that’s when I knew it was real," she said. "I heard her in the background, and I thought for sure that they had taken her.”The man on the other line directed her to go to the nearest grocery store and put money into Money Pak cards. Then they demanded the card numbers over the phone and ordered her to destroy the cards afterward.They told her to cut up the cards and email them photo evidence that they had been destroyed.“At that time he hung up and never called me back,” she explained. “So within a minute or two, I called my mom’s phone and at that time, she answered.”That’s when Kennedy’s realized she had fallen victim to an elaborate phone scam.The Sheriff’s Department says the scammers used a “spoofing device” to make it look like the phone was made from her mother’s phone number.The scammers also called Kennedy’s’ mother in the middle of the fake ransom call. They got her worked up by saying they had her daughter.“They just wanted her to be scared and sound scared. All I heard was her saying my name. I still can't believe it," Kennedy said. “I think their whole intention with calling her was to have her voice in the background while they were asking me to do whatever they wanted me to do." Kennedy says she not sure how the scammers got her information or her mother’s. She says she is always careful with her information and weary of scams.“I don't answer phone calls I don't recognize,” she said. “I don't answer blocked numbers. I let people leave voicemails to determine if it’s legit or not. I feel like the public needs to know about this (scam) because if I can fall for this, anybody can fall for this.”In an email, to 10News the Sheriff’s Department says people should hang up when they get phone calls like this and should immediately call law enforcement.Kennedy says that's what her mother did when she go the call, but for her  - it’s easier said than done.“This was life or death," she said. (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded to the scene of a half-acre brush fire in Escondido Monday afternoon. Cal Fire said the brush fire broke out near Del Dios Highway and Mount Israel Road.Firefighters wer able to extinguish the flames quickly but will remain on scene for several hours. Del Dios Highway appears to have reopened in both directions after the fire prompted the closure, causing traffic to back up for miles during rush hour. .@CALFIRESANDIEGO and cooperators are at scene of a half-acre vegetation fire near DelDios Hwy and Mount Israel Rd. (KGTV) - A local driver is warning of an unusual encounter with a dark SUV Saturday night on a North County freeway.Dashcam video captured on Interstate 15 shows an SUV with a light bar across the top. The driver tells 10News she initially thought it was a police vehicle and then spotted the back windshield, which was lit up by blue lights that resembled audio levels.Not long after, she says she heard a siren noise coming from that same SUV, as it approached a red light.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhood10News showed the video to CHP officer Jim Bettencourt who said he believes the blue light, the light bar, and siren are all vehicle code violations."If they were utilizing that to get people to move out of the way or caused a crash that would be another slew of charges," said Bettencourt.Bettencourt said because the SUV didn't have a symbol representing law enforcement, the driver wouldn't face an impersonating an officer charge. 972
