It sounds like a scene from a monster movie.Children from a church group were playing in a creek in West Alexandria, Ohio, on Wednesday evening when one of their leaders spotted a 7-foot-long crocodile swimming nearby. There were 16 kids -- all first- through sixth-graders -- playing in Bantas Fork Creek, and adults were in the water and on a small bridge to keep an eye on them, according to Rick Turnbull, who helps teach the children.Another adult "saw something in the water, a shadowy object moving, and he yelled down to the person on that side of the bridge and shouted 'get the kids out of the water,' " Turnbull said.Rich Denius was in the water with one of his sons and helped get the children to safety."Give Jesus all the glory for protecting these kids," Denius said. The crocodile was about 20 feet away by the time everyone got out of the creek. Turnbull said it swam right under the bridge they were standing on."He wasn't afraid of us. He swam under it, popped his head up and looked at us," he said.A wildlife officer was called in and shot the animal. Turnbull said the kids had been taken out of the area before that happened. It was probably a petCrocodiles are not native to Ohio, and the state's veterinarian said it was probably a pet that someone dumped when it got too big."This was the first sighting, so he probably hadn't been in there very long," Dr. Tony Forshey said. The crocodile was 7? feet long and weighed 171 pounds, he said.Forshey said officials scanned the animal for a microchip ID but didn't find one, and there weren't any signs of other crocodiles in the area. It's an unforgettable lessonTurnbull said the church group takes the children down to the creek a couple of times each summer, when the water's warm, to study nature as part of their religious lessons. On Wednesday, they discussed how some fish will gather together near a light source to protect themselves from predators."It was wild that we'd had a lesson about predators lurking in the shadows," he said.West Alexandria is about 20 miles west of Dayton, so they also talked about the need to be aware of their surroundings -- especially after last week's shooting in a popular Dayton nightlife district.Turnbull also stressed the importance of obeying people in authority, which really paid off because when the time came, the children climbed out of the creek without complaint."It's a lesson that these kids will never forget," he said. 2456

It is a common sight this time of year---Amazon delivering packages, but this time it's some of Baltimore's 4,000 employees of the company helping it deliver 2,000 so-called "boxes of smiles" to those who need them the most in the city."This includes toys, gifts, items of personal care and so and so forth," said Amazon Operations Director Preet Virdi as workers brought the gifts into the City Hall Rotunda. The need for such essentials became evident earlier this year when the city attempted to put a number on its disenfranchised citizens."We have approximately 2500 men, women and children who were experiencing an episode of homelessness at that time," said City Homeless Services Director Jerrianne Anthony. For those who have experienced life without a roof over their head, the boxes of smiles represent far more than a collection of gifts and essentials."Amazing. Amazon. The gifts. We need them. We need the Mayor's Office of Human Services, because without them, we have no hope," Sakina Ilyas told the crowd. But once she stepped out of the spotlight of this staged event, Ilyas opened up about her own experience with her family's past homelessness."It was very, very stressful especially during the holidays. No family. Nowhere to go,” said Ilyas. “The problem here in Baltimore City is lack of housing. Lack of affordable housing. There are over 17,000 abandoned houses that are just sitting there."In the meantime, just 10 days from now, on December 20, the Housing Authority of Baltimore City will no longer accept applications for public housing, citing a waiting list of 14,000 that averages seven years to deliver. While the unexpected gifts, along with a check for ,000 are appreciated, Ilyas is left pondering the obvious."More is needed, because when this is gone, the stage is set, the curtain is open, but what happens when it's over?"The city did adopt a three-year action plan on homelessness earlier this year with the goal of combining action, results and concrete steps to address the problem. 2036

It’s the foundation of American democracy: voting.Depending on where you are in the U.S., though, your election experience could look very different from that in your neighboring state or even just your neighbor.“It really does depend on where you are in the country,” said Marian Schneider, who heads up Verified Voting, a non-profit, non-partisan group that advocates for better election security. In particular, the group takes a closer look at when it comes to the use of computers in elections.“We use computers in every aspect of election administration in this country,” Schneider said. “We have also historically underfunded our elections and not put the money into them that we need in order to run a computerized operation.”So, what might voters encounter on election day? There are a few possibilities.- A paper ballot, where a voter uses a pen or paper to mark their choices and that paper is then scanned and counted by a computer.- A computerized device, where a voter presses a touchscreen to mark an electronic ballot, which then prints out a paper version that is scanned and counted.- And there are paperless electronic machines, which have a completely computerized ballot, with no paper trail. It is the last one, Schneider said, which raises big concerns because they are the most vulnerable to hacking. “First of all, they make it difficult to discover if something has gone wrong,” she said. “And then, even if you are able to discover it, you can't recover from it.”It can’t be recovered because there is no paper trail to serve as a backup. It’s a type of ballot currently used in all elections held in Louisiana, as well as some jurisdictions in nearly a dozen other states: Delaware, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. Some of those are now in the process of phasing out the paperless devices, but upgrading election security is costly.“What you just saw most recently is bipartisan agreement to fund elections at the state level, so Congress just agreed to provide 5 million, in addition to 5 million they allocated in 2018,” said Liz Howard, with the Brennan Center for Justice. “So, we’re getting close to billion from the federal government to improve election security across the country."While states continue grapple with the cost of replacing vulnerable and aging voting machines, Schneider said voters still need to do their part.“There's only one surefire way to make sure your vote is not counted,” she said, “and that's if you don't show up at the polls.” 2590
