There are still no clear guidelines on what constitutes tech addiction, but it's a growing concern likely on the minds of parents everywhere as they see their kids' faces constantly glued inches away from a screen. And everywhere you go, you're all but guaranteed to see people buried in their phones."The term 'tech addiction' is itself empty," Alter says. "Tech itself is only the vehicle for hundreds of different experiences, some of which undoubtedly become addictive for some people. They vary considerably, so I prefer not to use a single label to describe them, though most are delivered on screens."Apple and Google may be the two biggest culprits, as their products are the vehicles to deliver these experiences. However, Facebook deserves a fair amount of blame, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged in a blog post earlier this year, directly referencing the Time Well Spent movement. The social network announced plans to roll out changes aimed at making interactions more meaningful."By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down," Zuckerberg said. "But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable. And if we do the right thing, I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too." 1331

These counties also represent heavily-Democratic leaning constituencies, and the majority of those votes are anticipated to be for Stacey Abrams, the statement read. The campaign also said it was waiting for absentee ballots -- "another major pickup opportunity for Abrams"-- to be counted, something that Abrams told her supporters in Atlanta as well."Across our state, folks are opening up the dreams of voters in absentee ballots, and we believe our chance for a stronger Georgia is just within reach. But we cannot seize it until all voices are heard," Abrams said at the event early Wednesday morning. "And I promise you tonight, we're going to make sure that every vote is counted."Voters rights issues have taken front and center in the Georgia high profile gubernatorial race between Kemp, the GOP secretary of state, and Abrams, a Georgia state representative. If elected, Abrams would be the nation's first black female governor.Democrats have accused Kemp of a conflict of interest as he refused to step away from his post overseeing state elections while he campaigned for governor.Last month, a federal judge ruled Georgia election officials had to stop rejecting absentee ballots with voters' signatures that didn't appear to match signatures on record. On Sunday, Kemp's office opened an investigation into the Georgia Democratic Party for what it said was an attempted hack of the state's voter registration system, without providing proof. Georgia Democrats flatly denied the allegation. He dismissed critics alleging that he weaponized state law to suppress the minority vote as "outside agitators."A lawsuit filed Tuesday in a Georgia federal court by five state voters asked a judge to strip Kemp of his powers over the midterm election -- including any potential runoffs.Voters in the Peach State also faced long lines and malfunctioning machines during Tuesday's vote. 1887

To address Washington’s outbreak, Gov. Jay Inslee has banned all events and gatherings of more than 250 people in Seattle’s metro area. Seattle Public Schools also announced that its schools will close for at least two weeks, starting Thursday. Large events are also being canceled or paired down. Many sporting events will be played without spectators. That includes this year’s NCAA basketball tournaments. "The NCAA continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 in consultation with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panel,” wrote NCAA President Mark Emmert in a statement. “Based on their advice and my discussions with the NCAA Board of Governors, I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division I men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance.”The outbreak is affecting the Democratic presidential race as well. On Wednesday, former Vice President Joe Biden said he will indefinitely stay off the campaign trail as cases of the coronavirus spread. Instead, he will have “virtual events” for supporters to watch. As for the virus’ effect on Wall Street, stocks fell sharply, shaving 5.9% off the Dow Jones Industrial Average and bringing the index into a bear market. The more widely followed S&P 500 is within one percentage point of its own bear market, which would mark the end of one of Wall Street's greatest eras. Investors are waiting for a more aggressive response from the U.S. government to economic fallout from the coronavirus. Trump is expected to announce an executive order insisting on American-made medical supplies and pharmaceuticals in response to the coronavirus outbreak. That's according to a person familiar with the plan who wasn't authorized to publicly discuss the matter and spoke to The Associate Press on condition of anonymity. The president says he will be addressing the nation from the Oval Office at 9 p.m. He's expected to discuss efforts to combat the virus. 2014

Three weeks earlier, police wrestled a black woman to the ground at a Waffle House in Alabama, leaving her breasts exposed during the scuffle."We're once again outraged by a video showing police officers using excessive force on an unarmed, nonviolent African-American Waffle House customer," said Sherrilyn Ifill, president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund."Once again this incident was sparked when a Waffle House employee called the police after the patron allegedly complained about customer service. And once again the police responded with violence."In the incident in Saraland, Alabama, a woman questioned why she was charged extra for plastic utensils, Ifill said. The customer got into an argument with employees, and the situation spiraled out of control after police were called, the NAACP official said.Police, citing statements from Waffle House workers and a customer, offered a different account. They said the woman was with two others, and one of them brought in a drink from outside. After a worker told them to get rid of the drink, the group yelled profanities at employees and threatened violence, police said.Among the threats: That one of them "might have a gun," and that one would "come over this counter and beat your f****** a**," police said.Police said the woman resisted arrest.Waffle House said it reviewed security video and believes police intervention was appropriate, CNN affiliate WKRG reported. Police said that after watching the video and reading witness statements, they will not take action against the officers.Ifill is urging Waffle House to review and overhaul its policies to ensure employees do not subject customers to unnecessary police contact and brutality. The incident drew comparisons to last month's arrest of two men at a Philadelphia Starbucks as they waited for a friend to arrive. After that incident, Starbucks plans to shut down its stores for a day?later this month to train employees on racial bias. 1989
