SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three San Diego Dreamers are flying to Washington D.C. to meet with congressional members, attend rallies and continue to advocate for our border communities. “March 5 is a very significant date for us," Dulce Garcia said. So we want to make sure we’re in D.C. when March 5 comes.”“Absolutely, yes I’m nervous," Francisco Peralta said. "This is the first time actually being in D.C. ever and also it’s the first time that I’m going to be sitting in a room where, you know, with members of congress.”Ali Torabi will also be going. He started a GoFundMe to help raise money for their trip, as well as helped organize an art show. The three Dreamers will leave Saturday, March 3 and return Wednesday, March 7.   892

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When you book a flight, your base price may not represent the final bill due to mounting airline fees. As 10News examines ways to make it in San Diego, we have solutions for saving money on travel. It's not your imagination: fees are part of the way airlines do business."Instead of just one price for everything, it's now an a la carte menu," said AAA spokesman Allan Gundy. The hidden charges don't just apply to your luggage. Gundy says fees can climb for seat selection, reservation changes and cancellation, beverages, and in-flight wifi.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Getting to paradise on points this summerBefore you book, consider investing in a refundable ticket if you believe changes are possible. Also, many airlines charge higher fees to cancel within 24 hours of a flight, so act quickly if you know your travel plans need to be altered, AARP reports.Remember to download movies or games before you fly or, if you must have wifi, Grundy says to "sign up for a monthly subscription service like gogo, which is what most of the major U.S. airlines use."Food prices are high on planes, but you can buy snacks to take through TSA checkpoints and pick up beverages after security.RELATED: Making It in San Diego: What to know about using Tijuana airport's Cross Border XpressGundy also recommends you don't book the cheapest flight you find online because it may not be that great of a deal."Look at what all the additional fees would amount to and look at the total ticket cost," said Grundy. As for cutting down or skipping those fees altogether, there are a few things you can do. "There are airline branded credit cards that as a perk may offer free luggage," advises Gundy. You can also dodge fees by reaching out to a travel agent to find the best deals. 1798

president pro tem. During her years in public office, she’s worked alongside another woman who has worked her way up the ranks, Kamala Harris. When Harris was elected as the Attorney General, Atkins was elected to the Assembly. The two worked together on homeowner issues and through the last ten years, have become friends. Atkins said she remembers various phone calls from Harris through the years, ranging from Harris asking for support during her run for U.S. Senate, to asking for her support in a run for the presidency. Atkins said one of her favorite calls was on her birthday.RELATED: What happens to Kamala Harris's Senate seat?“I keep playing my birthday message from her. Aug. 1, I got a birthday message from my U.S. Senator, the Vice Presidential candidate, singing me happy birthday. I think that’s increased in value significantly,” she said, laughing.Atkins said Harris holds herself with poise and warmth during speeches and in the public eye, and that’s exactly how she is in person as well. She added that she expects Harris to face obstacles in the White House for various reasons ranging from being a woman to being a minority, but those are the qualities that maker her strong.“This is one of those moments where it is about time and she is so qualified, she is so ready, she is so qualified for this role and this job and to be on this stage,” said Atkins.RELATED: Kamala Harris becomes first Black woman, South Asian elected Vice PresidentAtkins said those traits have already started inspiring others to follow her lead.“To see the faces of women and young girls and people of color again say 'our voices matter,' it was quite something,” she said. 1789

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Trips to the grocery store can be tough on the wallets of families trying to make it in San Diego.According to the USDA, a family of four can spend anywhere between 0 and ,300 a month on groceries alone. The bigger the family, the more you spend. San Marcos resident Melanie Anderson says the grocery bill for her family of six was around ,500 a month.“I went to the store with no plan. I would go there and let the store tell me what I needed,” Anderson said.RELATED: USDA's meal planning guide for stretching your food budgetAnderson, a stay-at-home mom of four children, said she and her husband were interested in traveling more so they decided to take a look at their budget.“I realized I wanted to save money so that I could spend it on unforgettable things,” Anderson said.Once all the numbers were in place, they realized they could make changes to their grocery bill.RELATED: Ocean Beach duo cook up 'foodie' meals on a day budget“We were wasting food, we were throwing away food, we weren't planning,” said Anderson. Now the family spends between 0 and 0 a month on groceries.Anderson says her strategy is 'meal planning in reverse'. She focuses on creating dishes around the food she already has and only buying meat, bread, and produce that are marked down or on clearance. One of her biggest tips is calling the grocery stores in advance.RELATED: How to budget when you're on an inconsistent income“First, call the grocery store and ask them what time do you clearance whatever item you’re looking for. Whether it’s the meat department, ask to speak to the meat department. If you’re specifically looking for organic produce, ask that. They are very agreeable in letting you know that information.” Anderson said. According to Anderson, the system is faster than her old trips to the store. “I blaze in there, I look at the produce, I look at the deli meat, I look at the regular meat, the bakery items and I am out of there in ten minutes,” Anderson said. RELATED: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeSome of the items in her fridge include organic mushrooms, usually .99, marked down to .49. The lettuce she bought marked at .49, cases of wine for less than , ground turkey for .99 and ham on clearance for .99. Anderson is now a budget-savvy blogger and documents her grocery store savings and other ways to cut down your budget on her website and Facebook page, Six On A Budget. Her followers are now posting their grocery store victories. “They send me pictures of everything in their grocery cart. They’ll say I used to spend 0, now I spend 0. It’s so satisfying,” Anderson said. RELATED: San Diego ShortFall tool: Can you make ends meet?Anderson suggests heading to the grocery store early to get the best deals. She also says you should double check the 'sell by', 'use by', and 'best by' dates because you usually have a few days to use certain items before they go bad. Anderson also recommend you get creative in the kitchen with sites like Supercook where you can plug in ingredients you already have for recipe ideas. If you prefer to create a shopping list before you head to the store, the USDA has budgeting tips and suggested menus to help you save money. 3340
