BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Scripps station KMGH in Denver spoke to a heartbroken Broomfield family who was scammed out of a lot of money and who is sharing their story in the hope no one else falls victim to the same scam.Bre Madsen and her dad, Terry, have always loved Labrador retrievers."As soon as I saw Leeya's face, I thought for sure this puppy grabs your heart."But when Terry saw 9-week-old adorable Leeya on GreatRetrievers.com, he knew she was the one."I'd really like a purebred 'cause I’d like to do some pheasant hunting as I get closer to retirement,” said Terry. The breeder appeared to be based in Texas and listed the lab at a reasonable price tag: 9. The breeder even offered free shipping, immunizations, guaranteed health record and was ready to go.Terry paid the amount two weeks ago and is still waiting for Leeya. He can’t seem to reach the breeder anymore by phone, but still receives the random excuse via email, explaining the missed shipping date."Just couldn't get this puppy on the airplane. Things weren't going right," said Terry as he recounted the last excuse he was given.Bre wanted to be sure about the scam and pretended to be someone else interested in Leeya."When I'm on the phone with the guy and he's telling me that Leeya is still available, it took everything in me not to just break down and cry," said Bre.KMGH tried calling multiple times and did not reach anyone, nor a recorded voicemail associated with the breeder. We started digging into the testimonials on the breeder website too.A photo of a little girl in a hospital bed with a caption from her mother, about how helpful the golden retriever was to her daughter stricken with cancer, is actually ripped from an AP article. The picture is of a little girl with cancer but the girl is located in Ecuador, and that dog... well, it’s actually a cocker spaniel.Unless there's a good explanation, it seems like Leeya might not make it to Colorado, so Bre and Terry are sharing their story."It was so hard to see my dad get his heart broken like that and I just thought if there was anything that would help this from happening to anyone else, I would do it. I don't want them to do this to another family," said Bre.For more information about the Pet Animal Care Facilities Act under the Colorado Department of Agriculture, visit PACFA where you can file a complaint if you suspect someone is posing as a breeder. Also, any person operating as a breeder must register and be licensed with the USDA. Banking since COVID-19 has taken on a different form. From wearing a mask to not being able to talk with a teller, several changes have been implemented in recent months. At Michigan Legacy Credit Union, a cashless transaction requiring the help of a teller can now be handled from home, from the mall, or by the lake. They launched the virtual teller app in early July."As long as you don't need a cash transaction, you can open up a membership, you can apply for a loan or a mortgage," Teller Michael Castano said. "There's so many different member service opportunities you can have just from the comfort of your home.""Only 7 percent of our transactions are done by members in our lobby with a teller. Everything else is electronic format," CEO Carma Peters added.Peters said declining transactions in brick-and-mortar branches has fueled the credit unions to push to mobile banking, and since COVID-19, there's been a massive increase in mobile banking."We let members call us, text us, chat us, use our mobile website. Our mobile logins went up in the month of April by 50,000," Peters said. She said the plan was to equip branches with virtual tellers before launching the app. That comes next.Banking in-person has also taken on a different look. Wearing a mask during a visit prior to COVID-19 might raise suspicion. Now, it's encouraged at all credit unions. For banks that remain open, the American Banking Association has also called on all banks to adopt a face mask policy. This story was first reported by WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan. 1551

Black people from all walks of life are sharing their experiences of racism, why they’re hopeful about the current movement and how we can heal as a country.Evangelical leader Tony Evans is one of the most respected Christian pastors in the country. He shared his thoughts on how the church played a role in racism and how it can lead in the solution.“As a boy growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, I had to deal with my father explaining to me why we couldn’t go into certain restaurants due to segregation,” said Evans. As a 70-year-old black man, Evans says he has experienced his fair share of racism and discrimination.“I’ve gotten pulled over by police because I was in the wrong neighborhood,” he said. “’Why are you driving in this neighborhood?’ In college I went to a white church and the church told me that I was not welcome there.”Segregation nearly kept Evans from becoming the first African American to earn a Doctor of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. “If I would have applied a few years earlier, they would not have let me in, because that was part of a whole history of segregation, that was even in the theological religious realm,” he said.Early in his preaching, Evans says radio stations told him a black speaker might offend too many white listeners.“Circumstance after circumstance like that where I have in my sphere, both secular and sacred, where I have seen unrighteous decisions made on the basis of race and it contradicted the theology I was learning,” he said.Evans says the church was also a major contributor to racism today.“If it had never endorsed the unrighteous system of slavery in America, if it never gave theological validation for it, if it never supported the social construct of it, then we would not have it, because it would have trained its people to infiltrate the culture with a righteous and just world view,” he said.Evans, who wrote a book on race called “Oneness Embraced,” says churches need to lead in the solution through service.“Black Christians and white Christians crossing racial lines to serve other people in need,” said Evans. “When we decide we are going to cross the line to adopt public schools, to adopt the local police precinct, to adopt the central services in the community, to handle the homelessness in the community. We could turn this thing around in a very short period of time because they would see us leading the way, not merely reacting to what people are doing at either extreme in the culture.”Evans laid out a more detailed national three-point plan for how churches can respond to racism.“This is where God must be brought into play. And I must say, if he is left out, there will be no solution because he's the one who is ticked off about it.” 2746
