VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- California could become the first state in the nation to use recycled plastic as part of its roads and freeways. The state Senate unanimously passed SB 1238, which directs Caltrans to study the use of plastics in asphalt for construction, or repair of a state highway or road."There's no other state in the nation that has more paved roads in California," said Sen. Ben Hueso, who wrote the bill. "So, imagine if California developed the use for a product that it's abundant in … This would be a game changer. This would be a great way to reuse plastic.”That's especially important now, as China has stopped buying recycled materials from the U.S. Prior to 2018, California sent 2/3 of its recyclable materials to China, which has since banned all plastic trash imports. Now, instead of going into the landfill, it could go into California’s roads."It would help create jobs in our state. It would help a local contractor that we have in our county, it would help improve the sturdiness of our roads and reduce the maintenance of our roads," said Hueso.Hueso said he got the idea from a group of students at Bonita Vista High School in Chula Vista. He met with their Progressive Club and Green Club, challenging them to find solutions. The students introduced Hueso to MacReber Southern California, a Vista company that takes plastic and prepares it to be used in asphalt."It makes too much sense not to do," said MacReber CEO Rebeca Sparks. "With this technology, we can truly offset our footprint, and not only offset it but be do more than that to be plastic positive."MacReber takes plastic out of the recycling and landfill chain, and then processes it. The company then sells the plastic to asphalt companies. They use the plastic mix instead of oil when making asphalt.MacReber said in addition to being more environmentally friendly, it also creates a stronger, sturdier road."It's going to look feel and move the same as a traditional asphalt," said MacReber President Chris Sparks. "But our product lends to a stronger, longer lasting asphalt road."Hueso said finding a use like this for all of the plastic waste produced in California is vital to the environment, especially now that China has stopped buying the state's plastic waste. The bill still has to get approval from the state Assembly, and then it would need the governor’s signature to become law. After that, Caltrans would be responsible for studying and implementing the idea. 2478

WASHINGTON — The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell slightly last week to 751,000, a still-historically high level that shows that many employers keep cutting jobs in the face of the accelerating pandemic. A surge in viral cases and Congress’ failure so far to provide more aid for struggling individuals and businesses are threatening to deepen Americans’ economic pain. Eight months after the pandemic flattened the economy, weekly jobless claims still point to a stream of layoffs. Before the virus struck in March, the weekly figure had remained below 300,000 for more than five straight years. 626

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Californians are getting ready for a new set of businesses to reopen after June 12, 2020. Last Friday, the state released specific COVID-19 guidelines for several industries, including gyms, bars, and hotels. Vista Fitness owner Brian Belasco is setting up cones in his parking lot to create social distancing spots for his patrons. He's doing this well in advance of the state's gym reopenings on June 12."Being able to reopen means the world to us," Belasco said. Last Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom released specific guidelines for the next group of industries allowed to reopen with modifications, no sooner than June 12, 2020. They include gyms, schools, film production, professional sports, bars and wineries, hotels, cardrooms, family entertainment, museums, and zoos. Since mid-March, Belasco said his trainers have been successfully teaching online workout classes. "We just finished a virtual challenge," Belasco said. "We had members losing up to 30 pounds in 28 days."But he said he is ready to see his members in person. "It's the camaraderie, especially times like right now, bringing people together that is our specialty," Belasco said. That is why he says he is implementing many of the State's new gym guidelines, which include:Limiting the number of members insideConducting temperature and health screenings upon entryStaggering lockers and machinesProviding disinfecting wipes or gel for hands and equipment No sharing water bottles or towelsWearing masksFor weeks, Belasco has been practicing these guidelines already with his coaches and volunteers. "They get called in one by one, temperature check, foot bath, hand sanitizer, and then they get pointed to their station, and they're all spread out in this room," Belasco said as he pointed at the mat in the middle of the gym. So when June 12 rolls around, Belasco said the new guidelines will seem like old news. "We've been ready. We've been researching. We have all of the supplies, and we are ready to go," Belasco said proudly. All businesses in this category will require the San Diego County Public Health Officer's approval before they can reopen. Virginia voters elected the nation's first openly transgender candidate to the Virginia House of Delegates on Tuesday.Danica Roem unseated incumbent delegate Bob Marshall, who had been elected thirteen times over 26 years, according to Marshall's website. As of 9:07 p.m. ET, Democratic candidate Roem had 54.59% of the votes to Marshall's 45.36%, with 19 of 20 precincts reporting, according to the Virginia Department of Elections."Tonight, voters chose a smart, solutions-oriented trans leader over a divisive anti-LGBTQ demagogue -- sending a powerful message to anti-trans legislators all across the nation," said Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, president and CEO of Victory Fund -- a political action committee that works to increase the number of openly LGBTQ officials at all levels of government.Roem is the first openly transgender person elected to a state legislature in the US, according to Monica Roberts of the?TransGriot blog, which covers issues in the transgender community. Althea Garrison, elected in Massachusetts, was the first openly transgender person to serve in a state legislature, but did not campaign as an openly transgender person during her race in 1992.Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, also congratulated Roem in a?tweet : "Couldn't be more thrilled for Danica Roem. And good riddance to Bob Marshall, one of the most anti-choice, and anti-LGBTQ members of the VA House."Roem told Cosmopolitan in September that she views her gender identity as a strength."The message that I can succeed because of my gender, not despite it, because of who I am without being afraid of who I am is a human message," Roem said in the September interview with Cosmopolitan.Voters headed to the polls Tuesday for various races, including the Virginia and New Jersey governor races. 1851

WASHINGTON — Ivanka Trump has been deposed by attorneys alleging that President Donald Trump’s 2017 inauguration committee misused donor funds. A new court filing, first reported by CNN Wednesday, notes that Ivanka Trump, the president’s oldest daughter and a senior White House adviser, was interviewed Tuesday by attorneys from the Washington, D.C., attorney general’s office. The office has filed a lawsuit alleging waste of the nonprofit’s funds, accusing the committee of making more than million in improper payments to the president’s Washington, D.C., hotel for event space during the week of the inauguration in 2017.In a Thursday morning tweet, Trump confirmed that she had met with the D.C. attorney general in connection with the investigation. She said she shared an email with investigators in which she asked staff at the hotel to charge a "fair market rate" for hotel rooms."This 'inquiry' is another politically motivated demonstration of vindictiveness & waste of taxpayer dollars," Trump said. 1027
