White House chief of staff John Kelly was interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller's team in recent months, three people with knowledge of the matter told CNN.Kelly responded to a narrow set of questions from special counsel investigators after White House lawyers initially objected to Mueller's request to do the interview earlier this summer, the sources said. Kelly is widely expected to leave his position in the coming days and is no longer on speaking terms with President Donald Trump, CNN reported earlier Friday.Kelly is the latest high-ranking White House official known to provide information for Mueller's investigation, though his interview marks a departure of sorts since Kelly didn't join the White House until July 2017. Most of the dozens of other interviews have been with people who were associated with the Trump campaign, were part of the transition or served in the early part of the administration. The Mueller questions to Kelly centered on a narrow set of issues in the investigation of potential obstruction of justice, chiefly Kelly's recollection of an episode that took place after new reporting emerged about how the President had tried to fire Mueller. The President was angry at then-White House counsel Don McGahn about what had been reported by The New York Times. McGahn had refused to publicly deny the reporting. The special counsel wanted to try to corroborate McGahn's version of events. The White House counsel's office had initially fought the Mueller request. One source familiar with the matter said that Emmett Flood wanted to make sure "ground rules" were negotiated."In order to question a government official about things that happened during the course of government business, you've got to show that it's highly important and you can't get it anywhere else," the source said. The source noted that the Kelly request came at a sensitive time, following raids of the home and office of Michael Cohen, the President's now-former lawyer. The resistance to Kelly doing an interview represented a key turn by the President and his attorneys who had previously allowed the special counsel to interview current and former White House staff and handed over hundreds of thousands of documents.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. West Virginia public school teachers will strike for an eighth day Monday because the state legislature didn't meet their demand for higher pay and better benefits over the weekend. All 55 counties announced school closures for Monday. About 20,000 teachers walked out February 22, keeping almost 277,000 students out of class.Union leaders say the teachers won't return to work until they get a 5% raise. The pay raise remains in legislative limbo. At the state capitol in Charleston, a conference committee has been appointed?to resolve the differences between the state Senate and House. It's not known when the committee will meet, so it's possible the strike could stretch out for days. The waiting frustrates parents, students and union leaders, who've marched and crowded the state capitol for legislative hearings."We're playing with people's emotions, their livelihoods and it directly affects our students," said Christine Campbell of the American Federation of Teachers. "This is unprecedented. It's confusing and I think (teachers are) disheartened by the process."West Virginia public teachers earn?an average salary of about ,000, making them among the lowest paid educators in the United States.Gov. Jim Justice and the union leaders agreed earlier in the week that teachers and service personnel would receive a 5% pay raise. However, that raise must be passed as a law, since West Virginia is not a collective bargaining state. The bill quickly passed in the House Wednesday, but Senate lawmakers expressed concern about how the state will fund the raise.Democrats say new revenue projections show the money is there and that a difference of one percent would amount to million. On Saturday, after hours of passionate argument and discussion by lawmakers, the state Senate passed a version of the bill that provides a 4% raise. The House voted not to adopt the 4% version of the bill. With no agreement between the chambers, the conference committee was created.Three members from the House and three from the Senate -- two Republicans and one Democrat -- were selected. The group will have three days to come to a decision about the bill.A brief period of confusion occurred Saturday night after the Senate believed it had voted for the 4% raise. But a House version of the bill, which favored the higher pay raise, had somehow been entered into the Senate voting system and was approved by unsuspecting Senate members. When the error was discovered, the Senate corrected the mistake and re-voted for the lower pay raise.Elizabeth Yost, a teacher from Mercer County, said she was not discouraged by the votes in the legislature."When the events unfolded from there, it was evident we have a representative government in the Senate that abused power last night," she said. "Today, my determination, and that of my colleagues, is stronger." 2868

With millions of Americans set to lose a weekly 0 unemployment supplement this week, leaders in Washington are discussing another stimulus package that could extend the supplement for the unemployed. The 0 a week program from the federal government was added to state unemployment benefits.Leaders on Capitol Hill also are pushing for a second round of stimulus checks. While it appears Democrats and Republicans are in agreement that there should be another stimulus bill, compromising to the details remains an issue. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that he is looking at continuing an unemployment supplement, but at of 70%. Trump said that he and other GOP lawmakers believed that the supplement gave Americans an incentive to remain unemployed.“We want to have people go back and want to go back to work as opposed to be sort of forced into a position where they're making more money than they expected to make and the employers are having a hard time getting them back to work,” Trump said. “It still worked out well because it gave people a lifeline, a real lifeline. Now we're doing it again.”Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer agreed that an unemployment supplement is needed as unemployment levels remain in double figures. Democrats in the House passed a bill in the spring that would have extended the added unemployment through the end of the year. The GOP-held Senate has not considered the legislation.“It makes no sense to cut back at a time when we have over 20 million unemployed and we have the greatest unemployment crisis since the Great Depression,” Schumer said in an interview with CNN. “To cut back on unemployment insurance makes no sense whatsoever. That's what they're proposed. In the other proposal, we'll pay people to go back to work. Well, those who go back to work are getting the salary.”Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell suggested that an agreement is still a ways off. He also hasn’t signed off on an unemployment supplement, and says that his focus is to get workers back to work rather than provide supplemental unemployment. McConnell, however, said that his proposal would include a second round of stimulus checks. Details of that plan are not available, but McConnell previously said a second round of stimulus would include fewer Americans. With coronavirus cases remaining at high levels and large gathering spaces forced to operate at reduced capacities, it is hard to imagine employment levels reaching pre-coronavirus levels. McConnell told reporters earlier in July that the next round of stimulus funds should cover Americans making less than ,000 per year, which is far lower than the threshold for stimulus funds during the last round of aid, which many Americans received in April and May.McConnell said on Tuesday that the Senate is also looking at replenishing the Paycheck Protection Program, which gave companies funds to help them make payroll during the coronavirus pandemic.“With the majority of businesses expected to exhaust their initial paycheck protection funding this summer, we'll also be proposing a targeted second round of the PPP with a special eye toward hard hit businesses,” McConnell said. “And speaking of building on what worked in the Cares Act, we want another round of direct payments, direct payments to help American families keep driving our national comeback." 3375

What happened to Katie Hill shouldn’t happen to anyone. But, this moment requires more nuance, as Katie Hill’s story - our story - is also one of workplace abuse and harassment.— Rep. Katie Hill (@RepKatieHill) October 7, 2020 235
