LONDON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese automaker Geely has completed the acquisition of Volvo Car Corporation from Ford in London.Geely Chairman Li Shufu and Lewis Booth, Ford's chief financial officer (CFO) attended a signing ceremony in London on Monday."This is a historic day for Geely, which is extremely proud to have acquired Volvo Cars," said Li."The signing and completion of this acquisition reflects the commitment of Ford and Volvo executives to the future of this company, along with the vital efforts of union representatives and government officials in Sweden, Belgium and China as well as other relevant countries," said Li."This famous Swedish premium brand will remain true to its core values of safety, quality, environmental care and modern Scandinavian design as it strengthens the existing European and North American markets and expands its presence in China and other emerging markets," he added.Geely named Stefan Jacoby, chief executive of Volkswagen Group of America, as president and chief executive officer of Volvo Cars.Jacoby said: "I am honored to join a company with the prestige and growth potential of Volvo. The board comprises several new directors including Hans-Olov Olsson, former president and chief executive of Volvo Cars and former chief marketing officer of Ford, who will become vice chairman of the board.Hans-Oskarsson, deputy chief financial officer, will replace Stuart Rowley as the CFO of Volvo Cars. Rowley and former Volvo president and chief executive Stephen Odell are moving to leadership roles at Ford of Europe.Geely paid 1.3 billion U.S. dollars in cash plus a 200-million-dollar note, less than the price worth 1.8 billion dollars announced in March due to changes in pension obligations and working capital.Under the new ownership, Volvo Cars will keep its headquarters and manufacturing presence in Sweden and Belgium, and its board will have autonomy to execute its strategic plan. GUANLING, Guizhou, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged local government to use all resources to rescue victims of a landslide in southwest China's Guizhou Province.Rescuers should save the lives of the victims and treat the wounded using all possible means, said Hui during an inspection tour of the disaster-hit area from late Monday to Tuesday.He also called for the utmost efforts to properly resettle people affected by the landslide and sounded caution regarding additional landslides.He said all areas prone to landslides should be examined closely and nearby residents must be evacuated immediately upon any sign of an impending landslide.Further, information about the disaster relief efforts should be made public in a timely, objective, open and transparent manner, said Hui.The landslide occurred at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in Dazhai Village, Gangwu Township of Guanling County, burying 107 people from 38 families. Rescuers said their chances of survival were slim.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from rain-triggered mudslides in Zhouqu County of northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 337, with 1,148 others still missing, Chen Jianhua, official sources said Monday night.Another 1,242 people were rescued, Chen, Party chief of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which administers the county, said at a press conference.Chen said 218 injured survivors had received treatment in local hospitals, and 41 severely injured ones had been transferred to hospitals in the provincial capital, Lanzhou, as of 4:30 p.m.

XI'AN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Two floods and other rain-triggered disasters that hit northwest China's Shaanxi Province in the past 11 days had left at least 111 dead and 167 missing, provincial authorities said Sunday.The first floods, from the rain-swollen Hanjiang River and its tributaries, hit Shaanxi's Ankang, Hanzhong, and Shangluo cities from July 14 to 19. Another flood that began Thursday worsened the catastrophe.The floods have affected about 4.25 million people and forced 703,000 people to be evacuated. In the worst-hit Ankang City, 63 people were killed, 119 missing and 2,824 injured, according to a statement from the provincial government.The floods also caused an estimated economic loss of 9.56 billion yuan. Officials noted that more than 71,000 people were mobilized to assist in the flood control.
