SANAA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese medical mission arrived Sunday in the southern Yemeni province of Aden as part of a cooperation agreement between the two countries, state-run Saba news agency reported.The 45-strong mission will provide medical services to residents of the southern provinces of Aden, Lahij, Abyan and Hadramout, according to the report.The mission includes neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, thoracic surgeons, pediatric surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists and a number of administrative staff, Jamal Khadabish, director of the Aden-based al-Jomhoriya hospital, was quoted by Saba as saying.The mandate of the Chinese mission would last for one year in accordance with a protocol of health cooperation between Yemen and China, Khadabish noted.

BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhua) -- China and Japan "contacted" and exchanged views on the East China Sea issue in Beijing on Tuesday, said a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry."The two sides exchanged views on relevant issues, considered the contact beneficial and agreed to continue to maintain contacts and make joint efforts," said the statement.This was the first director general-level, or bureau chief-level, contact since the two countries reached principled consensus on the East China Sea issue in June 2008.

GENEVA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday asked the World Trade Organization to set up an expert panel to rule whether the European Union's antidumping duties on Chinese-made footwear violates global trade regulations.At a meeting of the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body, the Chinese delegation reiterated that the EU's antidumping measure was inconsistent with related WTO agreements and it impaired China's benefits."China requests the DSB to establish a panel to ensure the protection of China's legitimate rights and benefits under the WTO agreements," the delegation said in a statement.The delegation said that it was taking the action after the latest consultations with the EU on March 31 failed to resolve China's concerns and "no mutually satisfactory solution could be reached."The delegation's statement also urged the 27-nation bloc to bring its legislation in line with WTO agrements and "to terminate the measure on Chinese footwear on account of their inconsistency with WTO rules."The EU said it regretted the step take by China and blocked the panel request. But according to the WTO's dispute settlement procedures, a panel request can be blocked only once, which means the panel would be established automatically if China makes a second request at a DSB meeting scheduled for next month.China first brought the dispute to the WTO on Feb. 4, which initiated a 60-day consultation period between the two sides.A panel request is the second step in the WTO's dispute settlement procedure following unsuccesful consultations in finding a resolution.

BOAO, Hainan, April 10 (Xinhua) -- World politicians and entrepreneurs attending the annual Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Saturday called to prevent trade protectionism from posing a real threat to the fragile global economic recovery.The worst financial crisis since 1930s plunged the world economy into downturn last year, the first time since the Second World War. But many economies are recovering at unexpectedly quicker rates as massive fiscal stimulus has paid off.The world economy was in a recovery, but the global demand was still worryingly weak, Yi Xiaozhun, China's deputy commerce minister, said at the BFA meeting in Boao in south China's island province of Hainan.Many signs also showed a rise of trade protectionism as more and more countries took protectionist measures, Yi said.Former Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan said the once strong support for international cooperation appeared to be eroding as the financial crisis subsides, which is "even more worrying."Some nations were verbally against protectionism, but they in fact imposed anti-dumping or anti-subsidy measures and made a fuss about exchange rate problems, Zeng wrote in the BFA official publication.Up to 250 anti-dumping complaints were raised last year, 20 percent more than a year earlier, and 41 anti-subsidies complaints, up 193 percent year-on-year, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO).China has become the biggest victim of trade protectionism, according to the U.K.-based Center for Economic Policy Research. He added that the Doha round, if completed, would help create a large number of jobs and guarantee global economic recovery.Goh Chok Tong, Senior Minister and former Prime Minister of Singapore,also called to guard against trade protectionism under the green and environmental protection labels.The developed countries should help developing countries to upgrade technology rather than abusing protectionism, Goh said."We should work together to resist all kinds of trade protectionism, otherwise there will be no economic recovery and growth," Yi said.The three-day conference, under the theme of "Green Recovery: Asia's Realistic Choice for Sustainable Growth," will conclude on Sunday.The forum is committed to promoting regional economic integration and bringing Asian countries even closer to their development goals. He had always hoped that China could host an Olympic Games. And his wish was finally realized in 2008. The Chinese people thank him."Yu, who is also an International Olympic Committee vice president, added, "We want to express our deep condolences to the death of Mr. Samaranch. He has made tremendous contributions to the Olympic movement."He Zhenliang, the Honorary President of the COC and one of China's most famous sports figure, was deeply saddened by the death of Samaranch, whom he worked with for 20 years since he was elected to the IOC in 1981."The Olympic Movement lost a great leader, China lost a close friend and I lost a very close friend and an old brother," said the 80-year-old He.It was during Samaranch's reign that China returned to the Olympics in 1984 after a 32-year absence.
