We don’t often think of racism impacting people’s health. But Dr. Amber Johnson has made a career of studying how the two issues are intertwined.“We’re in Los Angeles at this moment. Black women are the most rent-burdened in this area, so you think about having the stresses of being in a low-class environment and having to deal with racism and cope with racism," said Dr. Johnson, a professor at California State Long Beach who focuses on racism in health care. "And a lot of times, there’s feelings of isolation and loneliness all those things contribute to early physiological wear and tear on our body. Our bodies are literally wearing down."Dr. Johnson says racism is ingrained in our health system. One reason she says implicit bias, which are attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding and our decisions, even if we don’t realize it.“These implicit biases are passed down through practice, beliefs, experimentation, all these other things that really contribute to these implicit biases that we see, that are, that become very apparent when black people present in health care fields,” she explained.But systemic racism may start before you get to the doctor's office. Some experts say it begins with access.“People of color face long-standing and persistent disparities in health and healthcare, and these span across a wide array of measures,” said Samantha Artiga, the Director of the Disparities Policy Project at the Kaiser Family Foundation. Artiga's job is to look at how people of different races, genders, and classes are treated differently within the health care system. She says disparities in health care and health outcomes start with access to care and works their way up through every imaginable facet of life.“People of color are more likely to be uninsured than white individuals. That translates into increased barriers to access and care because they’re more concerned about costs, may have less access to a provider, not have a huge source of care outside of the emergency room,” she explained.Those healthcare woes can then be tied directly to jobs because 159 million Americans of all races get health insurance through their employers.But experts say the root of the race and health care problem lies in the kinds of jobs filled mostly by Black and Brown Americans. This is because they are more likely to be working in industries that may not offer coverage to their employees, or when it is offered it may not be affordable to individualsResearch from the National Institute of Health and the Center for American Progress shows African Americans in the US are less likely to have health care coverage than white people. That may be why Black women are more likely to be overweight. Black children are more likely to have asthma. Black adults are more likely to have hypertension. Cancer kills Black people at a higher rate than any other group. Black people are more likely to be diabetic than white people. Black babies die at more than double the rates of all other races in the US, and Black women die more than three times as often during childbirth as white women.Those are just some of the disparities that exist.Over and over again while researching this story, we heard about another major healthcare issue for many people of color: a shortage of doctors, nurses, and other health care workers that look like them, sound like them and have similar life experiences.“Black physicians make up 4-5 percent of all doctors practicing nationwide, whereas, Blacks make up 13 percent of the US population,” said Dr. Leon McDougle, the president of the National Medical Association, a national group that represents Black physicians in the US. He says when he was in medical school, he didn’t have a lot of Black classmates.“I went to medical school here at the Ohio State in the mid-’80s and there weren’t many faculty doctors that looked like me, and when you saw a Black doctor, it almost became a mental image. So, that was inspiration for me to say this has to change,” said Dr. McDougle.He says in 2020 when he sees patients of color, it has an impact on them and they have an impact on him and his students.“More than half the time when I see patients, I have a medical student, and not too uncommonly, that student will be African-American or LatinX. And to just hear the patients give them, cause most of my patients are African American, and to hear them help uplift them in their pursuit of becoming a physician, I hear that all the time,” he said.So, there is hope that there will be more healthcare workers of color, but there is still a long way to go. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, over the last five years, the number of Black medical students has gone up about one percent, from 6 percent to 7 percent.Many say that's not enough.And the people working for change say the opportunity to make it happen is now.“It’s hard work to move systems and move structures and I just hope we don’t miss the opportunity that is presented at this current time, in terms of the attention, focus, and movement to do something about it,”“It’s not just for me to say I did this, but it’s for me, it’s for my mom, for my grandmother, it’s for my daughter. That’s four generations of black women that I’ve seen negatively affected by racism,” said Artiga.“It’s killing Black people. It’s killing, it’s killing us,” said Dr. Johnson. 5410

Two senior administration officials confirmed Meadows tested positive for the virus, which has killed more than 236,000 Americans so far this year. WATCH FULL INVESTIGATIVE REPORT, TONIGHT ON 10NEWS at 6PMSAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A North County couple said they paid a company thousands of dollars to put in a new kitchen, but that company never finished the job.Months after signing the contract, they learned the guy in charge was the subject of multiple Team 10 investigations and had his license revoked by the Contractors State License Board.“Maybe I was just naive, but it was an eye-opener,” said homeowner Mark.Mark asked 10News not to use his last name.He said while he and his wife were out of town a leak under the sink flooded their kitchen.The couple hired a mitigation company to take care of the damage but needed a restoration company to build it back up.They came across Mark Morningstar, who came highly recommended by a user on the website Nextdoor."One of the recommendations we got was through Maria, and Maria posed as a satisfied client,” Mark said. “She said, 'Hey, I know this person Marc Morningstar, he can do cabinet work, and he can do granite work. He can do basically everything.'"Maria Meeuwisse was the listed author of Mark's recommendation, she is also the license holder for Quality Painting SoCal.According to customers who spoke with Team 10, this is the same company where Morningstar works.State records show the license was issued in August 2018 for a painting and decorating contractor.Team 10 found postings on NextDoor from someone with the same name as Meeuwisse - talking up Morningstar and the company.Thinking the reviews were real, Mark and Diana said they hired Quality Painting SoCal to fix their kitchen."He (Morningstar) said ya I can do all this quote-unquote,” Mark said. “I can act as your quarterback and take care of everything for you.”Mark said Morningstar promised it would take about two weeks for the new kitchen and cost around ,000.So that's what Mark and Diana authorized on their credit card.Mark said Morningstar brought in contractors to do the work, but things quickly went south.They said the granite was installed incorrectly, cabinets weren't lining up, and eventually, crews stopped showing up, leaving Morningstar to do it himself."There would be a week, two weeks where he wouldn't show up, and the weeks he did show up, he would show up for a day, and during that day he would show up for a few hours, and it was clear he didn't know what he was doing,” Mark said.Mark said months after Morningstar started the job, the kitchen wasn't done and Morningstar stopped showing up."We googled Marc (Morningstar), and the investigative news came up immediately -- hit number one,” he said. “We watched the video and were like, "Oh my god, that's that guy.'”A 2017 Team 10 investigation exposed Morningstar's criminal business practices. Several former customers complained he took their money but never finished installing the fake grass. Team 10 also learned Morningstar had done some of the work after his contractor's license was suspended. According to a spokesman for the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), when a license is suspended, no contracts can be signed, no money can be paid, and no work can be done.Morningstar was also accused of using another contractor's license number.The CSLB eventually revoked Morningstar’s license.Court records show in September 2018, Morningstar pleaded guilty to diversion of construction funds, grand theft of personal property and improper home improvement contract procedure.Team 10 went to the listed address for Quality Painting SoCal to ask Morningstar about Mark and Diana's complaints.A woman who identified herself as Maria Meeuwisse, the company’s license holder, answered the door and said Morningstar wasn’t there.Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin told Meeuwisse customers are saying Morningstar is doing work without a contractor's license.“Which is not true and we’ve been talking with the CSLB about that,” she said.While asking Meeuwisse questions, a man who looked like Morningstar came in through a back entrance.Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin tried to talk to the man, but Meeuwisse closed the door.On Tuesday, the Contractors State License Board added disclosures to Quality Painting SoCal’s license. A disclosure means the CSLB has an open investigation against the company and has disclosed on its website that it believes there is evidence of a probable violation that would lead to either a suspension of revocation of the company’s contracting license and/or criminal prosecution. CSLB’s investigation is open. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Six Russian military officers sought to use computer hacking to disrupt the French election, the Winter Olympics in South Korea and U.S. businesses.That's according to a Justice Department indictment unsealed Monday that details attacks on a broad range of political, financial and athletic targets.While announcing the charges at a press conference, Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers called the officers’ actions “the most disruptive and destructive” computer attacks ever attributed to a single group. Demers said no country has weaponized its cyber capabilities as maliciously and irresponsibly as Russia, “wantonly causing unprecedented collateral damage to pursue small tactical advantages and to satisfy fits of spite.” All the defendants are alleged intelligence officers in the Russian military agency known as the GRU. The DOJ previously charged members of the same unit, also known to cybersecurity researchers as “Sandworm Team,” for their role in Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 U.S. elections. Though, the new indictment doesn't charge the officers in connection with the interference in the U.S. elections.The indictment also accuses the defendants in destructive attacks on Ukraine’s power grid. “These were the first reported destructive malware attacks against the control systems of civilian critical infrastructure,” said Demers. “These attacks turned out the lights and turned off the heat in the middle of the Eastern European winter, as the lives of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men, women and children went dark and cold.” From there, Demers says the conspirators’ “destructive path” widened to encompass “virtually the whole world.” The conspirators allegedly unleashed the “NotPetya” malware, which was reportedly designed to bring down entire networks in seconds and searching for remote computer connections through which to attack additional innocent victims. “The entirely foreseeable result was that the worm quickly spread globally, shutting down companies and inflicting immense financial harm,” said Demers. “This irresponsible conduct impaired the ability of companies in critical sectors, such as transportation and health, to provide services to the public–not only in Ukraine, but as far away as Western Pennsylvania."Demers says the malware led to monetary losses of nearly billion. Next, officials say the conspirators then turned their sights on the Winter Olympics. “The conspirators, feeling the embarrassment of international penalties related to Russia’s state-sponsored doping program, i.e., cheating, took it upon themselves to undermine the games,” said Demers. “Their cyber-attack combined the emotional maturity of a petulant child with the resources of a nation state.” The officers are accused of conducting spear phishing campaigns against South Korea, the host of the 2018 games, as well as the International Olympic Committee, Olympic partners, and athletes. Then, during the opening ceremony, they allegedly launched the “Olympic Destroyer” malware attack, which deleted data from thousands of computers supporting the Games, rendering them inoperable.
