(KGTV) - Dozens of people lined up for hours, as Play it Again Sports reopened in La Mesa on Thursday morning.Alfredo Lopez was the first in line, hoping to buy new weights."It says they're really resilient. So I think that's definitely part of what La Mesa has," Lopez says.The store had been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But it had to stay closed longer than expected after looters destroyed the store following protests in La Mesa on May 30.The protests were over police violence, but the angry mob that attacked the Play it Again Sports came long after the protests ended."I was not happy. I was upset that night, for sure," says owner Dan Buxton. "So much had been put into the store and for all it to be taken away at that moment, it hurt."Buxton says he had to replace the ceiling, the light fixtures, the flooring, windows, displays, and much of his inventory.But he says the community helped rebuild and showed its true colors."Clearly, the real La Mesa is what we saw after May 30 and we're proud to be part of it," says Buxton.As for the line that greeted him when he opened the store Thursday, Buxton simply said, "Thank you.""Just like the support we've been receiving for the past 7 weeks, it's the same thing," he says. (KGTV) - A local company wants to fill the gap of high unemployment among the blind and visually-impaired.While the majority are college-educated, 70 percent are unemployed. San Diego-based company Aira hopes to reverse the trend. The assistive technology service is announcing a new initiative to provide free service through the Aira?Employment Program.Aira uses smart glasses equipped with a camera that streams live video to a remote, human agent. Using the video stream, GPS, and web data, agents offer live, on-demand assistance to people who are blind or visually impaired.Now job-seekers will be able to take advantage of the service for free as they look for employment. Agents will help navigate employment sites, fill out applications, build resumes, and travel to and from meetings with prospective employers. "Besides ignorance of not knowing what a blind person is capable of doing, the accommodation aspect is the other fear and Aira can help bridge a lot of that," said Juan Hernandez, an Aira Software Engineer who is totally blind. With help from the community and national partners, Aira has an ambitious goal of lowering the unemployment number from 70 percent to under 7 percent.By removing barriers, Aira hopes companies will see an opportunity, blind and visually-impaired workers ready to put their vast skills and talents to work.  1436

(KGTV) -- At least three people were hospitalized Wednesday morning after a multi-vehicle collision on a La Mesa-area freeway caused by a wrong-way driver.At around 4:30 a.m., the California Highway Patrol received reports of a gray Honda According traveling the wrong way on northbound state Route 125 near Grossmont Boulevard.The CHP said the Accord collided with a Toyota SUV, disabling both vehicles. According to the CHP, the wrong-way driver ditched his damaged vehicle in the middle lanes and then left the scene on foot.Moments later, several other vehicles crashed into the Accord-Toyota wreckage.ABC 10News learned at least three people in the second crash were taken to the hospital with injuries of unknown severity.The incident forced the closure of all northbound SR-125 lanes at Lemon Avenue at around 4:50 a.m. Lanes were expected to reopen by 6 a.m.A description of the wrong-way driver was not immediately available. 958

LAKESIDE (CNS) - A pedestrian was struck and killed Friday by a bus in the unincorporated community of Lakeside, near Santee.The crash was reported at 5:45 p.m. at 12250 Woodside Ave., according to the California Highway Patrol.Firefighters worked to save the pedestrian's life.
