Scientists at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med), led by its Nevada State Public Health Laboratory (NSPHL) are studying a likely case of COVID-19 reinfection.Forty-eight days after testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 in April 2020 and after testing negative consecutively twice, a Washoe County, Nevada patient tested positive again, in June.The patient had tested negative on two separate occasions in the interim. The genomes of the patient’s virus samples were sequenced in April and June, displaying significant genetic discordance between the two cases, implying the patient was infected twice.“We examined the genomic material of the viruses and samples to investigate this, says NSPHL Director Mark Pandori. “It is just one finding, but it shows that a person can possibly become infected with SARS-CoV-2 a second time.”To solidify confidence in the case, Pandori and the research team partnered with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Biology Unit to conduct identity testing on the specimens and lab samples evaluated in the study to verify the specimens were from the same person.Embedded in the genomic material of SARS-CoV-2 is a detailed code that Pandori says may provide insight to a better understanding of this virus.“A virus has a biological genome like all living things. Since March, the NSPHL has analyzed the genomic RNA of approximately 200 positive COVID-19 samples from Nevadans who have tested positive for COVID-19,” said Pandori. “The power of genomic information could turn the tables in the fight against the coronavirus.” The information is shared to a world-wide database known as “GISAID”,” alongside the work of thousands of researchers.According to Pandori and the NSPHL-led research team, reinfection cases are a potential warning sign that it is possible to catch COVID-19 more than once, and with unpredictable severity.“If reinfection is possible on such a short timeline, there may be implications for the efficacy of vaccines developed to fight the disease. It may also have implications for herd immunity,” says Pandori. “It is important to note, that this is a singular finding. It does not provide any information to us with regard to the generalizability of this phenomenon.”Herd immunity depends on the theory that after natural infection, our immune systems will collectively protect us as a community from reinfection and further spread. There are currently many more unknowns than knowns about immune responses to COVID-19. “After one recover from COVID-19, we still do not know how much immunity is built up, how long it may last, or how well antibodies play a role in protection against reinfection,” says Pandori.”While research and scientific advancements continue to build, Pandori says the hard work of fighting this pandemic together will continue through the use of facial coverings, hand-washing, social distancing, as well as wide-scale testing, contact tracing, and isolation of new cases.“This is a novel disease. (KGTV) — A man was arrested after deputies say he fled the scene of a San Marcos crash and was stopped by passersby from leaving a second crash scene.San Diego Sheriff's deputies received a report of a beige Mercedes-Benz traveling at an unsafe speed on northbound Bennett Ave. before is ran off the road and collided with a concrete wall and then a residence at 600 Bennett Ave.The driver, a 26-year-old man, tried to flee the area, but was detained by passerbys until deputies arrived.While deputies were responding to that incident, SDSO says they received another call about a black, male suspect wearing camouflage clothing who had used a hatchet to smash the window of a vehicle at a Stater Brothers Grocery store at 1330 East Mission Rd. The man reportedly fled in a vehicle matching the description of the Mercedes-Benz and struck a gray Audi in the area of Knob Hill Rd., SDSO said. The driver of the Audi, a 61-year-old woman, was not injured. At the scene of the Bennett Ave. crash, paramedic treated the suspect at the scene and he was released. Based on evidence and interviews, deputies determined that the suspect was under the influence of prescription medication and heavily intoxicated at the time of the collision. The man was later arrested for driving under the influence, vandalism, and leaving the scene of an accident.SDSO's traffic division is investigating the crime. 1420

(KGTV) - A Paradise family is thanking the San Diego community, after donations began pouring in for them following the deadly Camp Fire.The Harrisons are currently staying with family in Santee after the fire destroyed their homes. With nothing to return to, the family said they may make San Diego their permanent home and have already started looking at schools for their teenage son."I don't think Thanksgiving could have come at a better time," said Emily Keith, who evaded flames while carrying the family's three pets and caring for her brother."I had to go up on sidewalks and into front yards and in between trees, and try to maneuver my way out of town," Keith said.RELATED: Light rain falling on Camp Fire zone could hurt search effortDuring the evacuation, the children were separated from their parents. At one point, their car caught fire and they were forced to run from the flames."It was a life or death situation, honestly," Haley Harrison said. "I was running down the road hoping that someone would stop."The family made it safely to Chico nearly seven hours later. While they haven't been able to go back to Paradise, they've seen photos of their homes burned to the ground."My kids are safe. 18 years of stuff and memories we had in the house are gone but I don't care about that," Haley and Emily's dad Tyler said. "You hit the reset button. SANDUSKY, Ohio - Luggage lost in the wind with a Sandusky, Ohio man's supply of life-saving medication inside.Alvin Rogers was taking the Greyhound bus from Sandusky to Pensacola, Florida in September. His headache started in Atlanta."They were telling me I couldn't go to Pensacola because of the storm," said Rogers.Rogers' insulin pens, similar to the medicine he lost in the bags that can't be found by Greyhound. Hurricane Florence delayed Rogers, but while he was stuck, Alvin was told his three bags were sent to Pensacola on another bus."I said, 'Well, how can my luggage go to Pensacola in a storm and I can't," asked Rogers. "I mean, it's still gotta be on the bus."That was the first time Rogers was separated from his bags and the thousands of dollars worth of medicine that he needed for an extended trip. When Rogers finally got to Pensacola a day later, the bags were nowhere to be found."So I had to wind up buying a plane ticket to get back to Ohio so I could get my doctors to get me some more meds," said Rogers.Rogers' bus and plane tickets bringing him to Pensacola, Florida and back to Ohio.A month later, back in Sandusky, Rogers still doesn't have his bags even after constant calls from Roger's roommate, Karin Lucas."A fiasco," said Lucas, describing when she calls Greyhound. "I get transferred constantly. Representatives pass the buck."Rogers and Lucas say when they reach out to Greyhound for help, they're surprised when a live person is on the other end of the line.Lucas says they could get 0 for each of the three lost bags through the Greyhound claim process. But the emergency plane ticket was nearly 0 itself. The original Greyhound ticket was about 0, including the extra money Rogers paid to get help loading and unloading the luggage and Rogers can't get that money back."For all the good it did, I still wound up losing everything," said Rogers.Roger's claim form identifies ,000 worth of medicine and personal items lost in the bags."Everything he owns was in those bags because he planned on relocating," said Lucas.Lucas says when she reaches out to Greyhound for help, she gets nowhere."For them to be as nonchalant about the situation is really really sad," said Lucas.The Cleveland Greyhound Station, where Rogers says his bags might arrive if they are ever found.Greyhound said they are still looking for the bags. Even once they are found, Alvin says he'll likely have to pick up his bags at the bus station in Cleveland or one of Ohio's other bigger cities. Rogers said he's been told Greyhound won't deliver bags to smaller pickup spots like Sandusky.Back in April, a bizarre Greyhound trip left Cleveland for New York City before turning around before a problem with the bus. Then, the city went all the way to Toledo because the driver missed the exit for Cleveland. Back then, riders said Greyhound was not very helpful finding a solution and did not offer refunds. 2963
