A University of Florida research unit killed more than 150 birds over the past 10 years, the Gainesville Sun reported, citing U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service documents.The paper says that of the birds killed at the Plant Science Research and Education Unit, 47 were sandhill cranes and 105 were ring-billed gulls.While the Florida sandhill crane isn't considered endangered, it is a threatened species according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.Director of the unit, Jim Boyer, told the Sun the cranes and gulls had damaged or eaten crops grown for research, including high-value peanuts part of a breeding study.The unit says it has since decided to use non-lethal means to protect crops from cranes. 732

A sergeant involved in the search for a missing hiker in Zion National Park says there are several discrepancies he sees in the case of her 12-day survival in the park.Holly Courtier went missing while hiking in the park on October 6. A rescue effort involving the national park’s team and others, including K-9 teams and trained investigators, found Courtier on October 18 after a credible tip of a possible sighting.Her family said Courtier hit her head, became disoriented, and was able to stay near a “water source” in the park.In an interview with ABC4 in Salt Lake City, Sgt. Darrell Cashin says he finds some “discrepancies and questions that do not add up.”Cashin is a liaison with Washington County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, a job he’s had for about nine years, in addition he says he has 25 years experience on search and rescue teams.One thing he says didn’t add up was the water source. Park officials say Courtier was found along the Virgin River, but Cashin says that river was likely not drinkable or at least would have caused her to get sick.In August, Zion National Park officials sent out a warning to all visitors to avoid contact with the Virgin River “until further notice” because of levels of cyanobacteria from a toxic algal bloom.“If she had been drinking that water, unless she had some really high immune system, she would’ve been very, very ill and probably unable to come out on her own,” Cashin told ABC4. “She either took a lot of water with her or had another clean water source that was near here, but the Virgin River is not that source.”CNN reports the family told them Courtier was only able to take a few steps before collapsing. A Texas man is facing riot charges in Minnesota for allegedly firing a semiautomatic rifle into a Minneapolis police building during demonstrations following the death of George Floyd.A criminal complaint alleges Ivan Harrison Hunter, 26, is a member of the Boogaloo Bois, a group that espouses violent anti-government views, and that he drove to Minneapolis at the end of May with the intent of participating in a riot.U.S. Attorney Erica MacDonald announced Hunter faces charges of traveling across state lines to participate in a riot.Floyd, who was Black, died on Memorial Day after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on his neck for nearly eight minutes. The incident sparked protests against police racism and brutality across the country.Federal investigators have said he fired 13 rounds from a semiautomatic rifle into the Minneapolis Police Department's Third Precinct building while looters were inside. The building later burned. They say they have video of the incident and Hunter was identified from a screen grab of that video.According to the complaint, Hunter made statements on social media describing what he did in Minneapolis.Police in Austin, Texas, stopped a pickup truck on June 3 in which Hunter was a passenger for multiple traffic violations. Hunter had six loaded magazines for a semiautomatic rifle in a tactical vest he was wearing.
