SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diego salon owners say the regulations released by the state may not be enough to help save their businesses.Like other business owners around San Diego and across California, salon owner Season McKesson has been trying to navigate through the many changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.Through the pandemic, she and other business owners have had to deal with closures, implementing safety precautions, and obtaining personal protective equipment.RELATED: New guidance issued for hair/nail salons, barbershops to move outdoorsOn Monday, the state announced updated guidelines for hair salons and barbershops to operate outdoors.McKesson was prepared to reopen her salon to operate outside until she read the regulations thoroughly. According to the state’s guidelines, salons can reopen but they cannot offer any chemical-related treatments and cannot shampoo customers.“At first, I was trying to be optimistic; you know, giving our industry a way out to come back … but after they dropped the bomb that it’s only haircuts. Reality sets in, and there’s absolutely no way people are going to make ends meet,” she said.McKesson told ABC 10News the guidelines cuts what she believes are essential to the salon experience.She added, “You go to a salon for a certain experience and you’re going to sit and get sprayed down in 100-degree weather. There’s no way.”McKesson is also concerned about the space to operate outdoors, saying not many salons have patios and would have to move into parking spaces. She is similarly worried about the cleanliness of working outside.“It’s not sanitary. It’s not a controlled environment; sitting behind a chair is a controlled environment. I know it’s being cleaned and I know what’s being touched,” McKesson said.Several other salon owners around San Diego County told ABC 10News they are leaning towards not reopening because of the rules, which puts them in an already tough financial situation as they try to keep their businesses alive. 2021
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several major streets around San Diego are closed to cars to make way for more bicycles Sunday. The San Diego Bike Coalition hopes the event, called CicloSDias, will encourage people to ride their bikes instead of using their vehicles. Streets like Adams Avenue in Normal Heights and El Cajon Boulevard in City Heights will be closed. The event starts at 10 a.m. and lasts until 5 p.m. The event will also host a free concert with food and activities on El Cajon Boulevard between Fairmont and 44th Street. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scooter riders near the beach are checking their rides a little closer following reports of a group of vandals cutting the brake lines on Byrd scooters in Pacific Beach. "That actually happened to me once in Key West. I had rented scooters and somebody had cut the gas line and we had to walk several miles,” said Jamie Gustine. It was a gas line then, but Jamie says now she’s forced to worry about cut brake lines when she rides. "My kids have ridden them, I have an 8 year old and a 12 year old who was riding the scooter as well, so that's where it scares me the most," she continued. Several people took to social media after the holiday weekend reporting a group of people cutting brake lines on Byrd scooters in Pacific Beach. "It's always something you're thinking about as a parent,” said Michael Cole. Michael Cole, thinking about it as he teaches his 7-year-old daughter to ride. "Somebody is eventually going to get hurt when you're doing something like that, especially down here by the beach, you grab a scooter, you're not thinking that someone cut the break lines."San Diego Police say you should contact the scooter company directly so they can remove the damaged scooters from the streets. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some COVID-19 survivors are noticing a surprising symptom months after their battle with the virus: hair loss.Nikki Privett said she had a mild case of COVID-19 back in April, but several months later, she says her hair started falling out in chunks.“I noticed that more and more was coming out in my hands and then eventually in July it became handfuls,” she told our sister station WRTV in Indianapolis. Dr. Nancy Maly, a physician in dermatology at Sharp Rees-Stealy, said she has seen more patients with complaints about hair loss recently, both from those who have recovered from COVID and those who have not been infected."I definitely have seen more patients lately coming in for hair loss -- with and without having had COVID," Maly said. "From what we know about COVID, there's not really a compelling reason to believe that it's the virus itself but more likely it's this stress-induced kind of hair loss that we know about and see all the time."Doctors believe it’s most likely a condition called telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss that can affect both women and men, and typically starts about three months after a stressful event.It can be triggered by emotional stress like a job loss or the death of a loved one, or by physical stress like a serious illness.Typically, adults shed about 100 hairs a day. But Dr. Maly said when your body is in shock or fighting a disease, there can be backlog on that hair loss.“During that stressful time, your body is prioritizing the most important functions and shedding your hair is not one of them,” she said. “So you end up having that delayed reaction where the hairs that were supposed to fall out during that time fall out later.”There is not a direct treatment for telogen effluvium but this temporary form of hair loss usually resolves itself after about three to six months, she said.There’s also early research showing a different kind of link between hair loss and the virus.Two small studies showed that bald men may be up to 40 percent more at risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19. Scientists theorize it’s because bald men have higher levels of a hormone called adrogen that seems to help the virus enter cells. 2216
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - School districts across San Diego could begin to build affordable housing for employees and teachers who are struggling to make ends meet.Under the Teachers Housing Act of 2016, districts are now allowed to build housing on land they own. They can designate the homes specifically for teachers and employees, while still getting tax credits and funding usually only given to affordable housing projects open to the general public."The people working at schools need to live in the community they're working in," says San Diego County Board of Trustees Vice President Mark Powell. He recently published an article on the website VoiceofSanDiego.com advocating for the idea. He believes it would be a great way to make sure districts can attract and retain teachers who may not be able to afford California's rising housing prices."If wages are not high enough for them to afford to work in this area, then they're going to leave," says Powell. "That creates a vacuum, and it creates a shortage of a workforce."Right now, the average salary of a teacher in San Diego is ,314.That's less than half of what you need to make to afford a median-priced home in the area.Teachers we spoke with say they can't afford to live in the school districts they work for."I feel like an outsider," says Olympian High School Music Teacher Jennifer Opdahl. She drives about a half-hour to and from work every day. Opdahl says she has problems connecting with the community when she doesn't live there. She also gets frustrated that she can't vote on issues that affect her district. "I would be less stressed. I would be less exhausted. I would have better balance," Opdahl says of the benefits of living closer to campus. "All of those things equate to better health and, honestly, a longer career."San Diego Unified School District officials say the idea of using excess land to build housing is something they're already looking into. Recently, they partnered with Monarch Developments on an apartment complex in Scripps Ranch. The developer is leasing the land from the district and will designate 20% of the apartments in the complex as affordable housing. The district hopes their employees will be able to move into those units."We absolutely intend to be a part of the solution," says SDUSD Board Member Richard Barerra. He says the district is also looking at a handful of sites that they can turn into housing.Barerra says the district plans to move Central Elementary School in City Heights to a new location on the site of Wilson Middle School. He says the land where Central sits right now could become housing. He also says the district is considering renovating their headquarters on Normal Street to include a teachers' village with housing and open space. The district is also turning their old book depository building on 22nd Street and Commercial into a mixed-use development."To deliver quality education, you need quality educators," says Barerra. "So everything we can do to make it possible for great teachers and particularly young teachers to come into our district and teach our kids, it's all part of the investment in education that voters in San Diego have made."Because the districts already own the land, Powell believes they can bypass a lot of the planning steps that delay construction and add to costs. That would help keep the cost of rent down for teachers when they move it. It could also eventually become a way for districts to add money to their budget."You can use bond money, or you can get federal grants or loans from the state to build the units," says Powell. "Eventually, at some point, these lands start to pencil out and are positive cash flow."Barerra says he thinks SDUSD could have housing completed within 3-5 years."I think what we will do is create a sense of what's possible that other districts can look at and this can be really a big part of the solution," he says. 3939
