OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Forever 21 is one of a handful of stores that allows men and women to try on clothes in the same area.Now, some shoppers believe it might be time for a change.This comes after a man was charged for allegedly recording a woman and a girl inside a Forever 21 changing room at the Overland Park mall.“For a place like this, I don't think that's appropriate at all to have men, women and children in the same dressing room at all,” said Jaymee Henderson, who shops at Forever 21.Scripps station KSHB in Kansas City sat down with an attorney to find out what the laws are when it comes to recording video in a clothing store like this.Attorney Bernie Rhodes said anything within the store is fair game."If I want to walk into a Forever 21 store and put my cell phone in my breast pocket and film my interaction with the sales clerk, that's perfectly legal,” said Rhodes.But once you get to the dressing room area, the rules change."What a store can't do is install a security camera in the bathroom or dressing rooms because there we have what we call an expectation of privacy. The same is true for perverts,” said Rhodes.Rhodes said a person can record themselves in the dressing room with their own device.In the Forever 21 dressing rooms, there is a large gap between the floor and the fitting room wall. That’s how prosecutors allege a man took video of a girl and a woman on his cell phone.A petition on Change.org is calling on the store to separate their dressing rooms by gender, but Rhodes believes that change won’t prevent people from breaking the law."It falls upon the individual who is acting illegally, he or she knows what they're doing is wrong. "It's really a very effective way to get unstuck when you have an issue like ADHD or autism."She says children with ADHD and autism may have be having more difficulties amid the pandemic than others."What we've seen during the pandemic is an exacerbation of pre-existing conditions, and some kids for the first time are showing signs of panic, loneliness, depression and anxiety," Capanna-Hodge said. "Certainly, we're seeing parents who are extremely overwhelmed."Those same overwhelmed parents, hoping for holiday togetherness, are now having to explain to their children why they have to have a quieter than usual holiday gathering.Capanna-Hodge has three tips for parents to do just that.1. Have a developmentally-appropriate conversation2. Validate feelings"You want to listen and say statements like, 'I hear you' You don't want to dismiss how a kid feels if they're crying, you don't want to say, 'I feel that way too.' You'll have to deal with it. And I know all parents say that, but we want to be there and listen."3. Find alternative ways to keep family traditions alive"We came up with a box full of all the ingredients that Nona would need to make thier special treats, and then us having that same box and doing it via zoom and still preserving that tradition because that's important to us." PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, tens of millions of school kids across the country suddenly found themselves going to school at home. Among them was 17-year-old Andya Sharps.“It was kind of rough, my high school year,” she said, “but I'm just excited that it's all over.”It was rough, in part, because in addition to being a high school senior during the pandemic, Andya also has a young son.“We had to learn how to do work at home, instead of being around our teachers for help. So, it was just a little hard,” she said. “Then, [my son’s] out of school on top of that. So, I had to deal with his schoolwork and my schoolwork at home.”Despite the challenges, she’s now graduating from her Philadelphia high school having been student of the month several times and with perfect attendance.“She came to us with her infant and she came with her determination and she just had a drive to finish,” said Lita Byrd, principal of Ombudsman Northwest Accelerated High School.Andya’s accomplishments left her grandmother, Adrienne Pearson, nearly speechless.“As talkative as I am, I’m kind of without words to express it,” Pearson said. “This is just magnificent that she's doing this she's doing this for herself, as well as for her son, and I am so very, very proud of her.”However, Andya had help along the way, too, thanks in part to an immersive curriculum and program for 12,000 at-risk students in U.S. public schools through ChanceLight Ombudsman Educational Services.“You've got to create that environment where, one, that the slate is wiped clean, it's a brand-new day and we're going to find out what you're really strong in,” said ChanceLight CEO Mark Claypool.For them, technology has always been a part of that, which is why they say the pandemic didn’t affect their students’ ability to learn remotely, as much as it did others.As for Andya, she’s heading to college and plans to study pediatric physical therapy.“You can do anything that you put your mind to,” she said, “no matter what.” 2030
