The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted businesses and industries around the country as unemployment rates are at historic highs and many are wondering how and when our economy will recover."One of the biggest impacts is going to be on workers' wages. They’re not going to recover for years. Executive Director Blake Konczal says he doesn't expect people to start to really look for another job until unemployment benefits run dry. But once they do, there will be a mad dash for any available jobs."When you’re looking for work, when unemployment is that rampant, the question regrettably isn’t, ‘Why aren’t I getting a higher wage?’ People want a wage," says Konczal.The good news, though, is that economists don't expect the cost of living to increase much.“Because wages have been low, demand has been low, so the cost of living has only gone up gradually," says Strauss.But with high unemployment and few wage increases, people will likely be spending less."That negative effect will be moving forward in a lot of industries relying on discretionary items because you're still going to buy food, because that’s a necessity, but you’re not going to go on a vacation, you’re not going to buy a new car," says Strauss.Konczal is worried about how this economic downturn will affect small businesses…“And the people who worked for them,” Konczal said. “In nine out of 10 times those types of businesses are the strength of our economy, sets us apart. But in this particular quixotic COVID environment, they’re the ones who are really getting hammered."Even before the pandemic, experts say there was still a high demand for qualified employees. The Department of Justice said Monday that an NYPD officer had been arrested and charged with allegedly acting as an "illegal agent" for the Chinese government.In a statement released Monday, the DOJ said that in addition to illegal agent charges, 33-year-old Baimadajie Angwang has also been charged with committing wire fraud, making false statements and obstructing an official proceeding.The DOJ alleges that Angwang was providing information about Chinese citizens in the New York area to the government of the People's Republic of China. He was also allegedly "developing intelligence sources within the Tibetan community."According to Scripps station WPIX in New York, Angwang is a Tibetan native and resident of Long Island. He worked in the NYPD's 111th precinct in Queens and was also employed by the U.S. Army Reserve as a staff sergeant.Angwang initially arrived in the U.S. on a cultural exchange visa. Once that visa was renewed, he overstayed the length and later claimed asylum "on the basis that he had allegedly been arrested and tortured" in China due to his Tibetan heritage.A complaint alleges that Angwang has worked under the control of the Chinese government since 2014. He allegedly told his Chinese government handler that he wanted to be promoted within the NYPD "so that he could assist the PRC and bring 'glory to China.'""As alleged in this federal complaint, Baimadajie Angwang violated every oath he took in this country. One to the United States, another to the U.S. Army, and a third to this Police Department," NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said. The European leg of Lady Gaga's "Joanne World Tour" has been postponed as the singer grapples with health issues, Live Nation announced Monday.In a statement posted on the promoter's site, Live Nation revealed that the portion of the tour that was set to begin September 21 in Barcelona, Spain, and conclude on October 28 in Koln, Germany, has been postponed until 2018."Lady Gaga is suffering from severe physical pain that has impacted her ability to perform," the statement read. The CDC is recommending Americans not travel for Thanksgiving during the current spike in coronavirus cases nationwide.“As cases continue to increase rapidly across the United States, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website reads. “Travel may increase your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19. Postponing travel and staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others this year.”This is the strongest urging from the health agency, which is part of the Health and Human Services Department, asking Americans to take stricter precautions to slow the spread of the coronavirus.There are more than 11 million reported cases of COVID-19 in this country since the pandemic started, and more than 250,000 Americans have died."We're seeing exponential growth in cases," CDC COVID-19 incident manager Dr. Henry Walke said during a press briefing. "The opportunity to translocate disease or infection from one part of the country to another leads to our recommendation to avoid travel at this time."If people are still planning to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, the CDC has a series of questions on their website for travelers and family members to consider before going ahead with travel plans.Questions include: Are you, someone in your household, or someone you will be visiting at increased risk for getting very sick from COVID-19? Are cases high or increasing in your community or your destination? Are hospitals in your community or your destination overwhelmed with patients who have COVID-19? Do your plans include traveling by bus, train, or air which might make staying 6 feet apart difficult?“We understand that people want to see their family and relatives and do it as they’ve always done it. But this year we’re asking them to limit their travel," Dr. Walke said. The CDC also recommends those who travel to follow all of their guidance for slowing the spread of coronavirus: wear a mask, wash hands, social distance, get the flu shot, and bring extra masks and hand sanitizer.Whether or not there is travel involved, the CDC also recommends some safety precautions when celebrating Thanksgiving with a group of people.These include bringing individual utensils, plates and cups to reduce sharing, wear a mask when around people not in your household - even indoors, use single-use options when possible to reduce sharing.Consider eating outside and limit the number of guests, the CDC says. Also, clean and disinfect touched surfaces between use.
