On Friday afternoon, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded it's warning to consumers to cover all types of romaine lettuce, now including whole heads and hearts of romaine lettuce, in addition to chopped romaine and salads and salad mixes containing romaine.Romaine lettuce has been linked to the growing number of people hospitalized due to a multistate E. coli outbreak. 53 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli in 16 states since March 13, the CDC said. Thirty-one of those ill have been hospitalized. Five of them developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening. OAKLAND, Ca. — You might have forgotten what it felt like to be in a theater that’s packed with people, watching a movie on a big screen.Carlos Courtade remembers the connection.“You came for the feeling, like you were part of something,” he said.He remembers the energy that this pandemic has turned into emptiness inside his theater, The New Parkway, in Oakland, California.Courtade is The New Parkway’s director of community outreach.“We already, as an independent movie theater, pride ourselves on having some of the lowest ticket prices around town and also, at the same time, paying our employees the most out of a living wage, more than any other movie theater around, so already our margins are already really, really narrow,” Courtade said.Courtade is familiar with the script that’s been written for theaters in 2020.Hundreds of theaters have closed, and many will never show films again.But The New Parkway is unique, and that’s easy to see when you look at its theaters. Instead of seats, there are couches, giving it more of a basement or living room type feel than a theater.What’s also unique is what is keeping them in business.“Unlike a lot of movie theaters around, we had the benefit of having a full-sized kitchen,” Courtade said.The kitchen is a plot twist that’s keeping the lights on at a movie theater that hasn’t shown a movie in nine months.The New Parkway’s staff prepare and package food it typically would serve in its theater but now sell it to customers who order online.“For the most part, it’s been enabling us to keep our heads above water,” Courtade said.The food helps pay the rent at a time when the movie-less theater is missing 0,000 a month in revenue.But when you look around Oakland, like many cities, you can see why just being open is a win.“I don’t think anyone knows what the impact is going to be long-term,” said Marcus Osborne, who started working as a manager at The New Parkway during the pandemic.As coronavirus, social distancing, and isolation threaten movie theaters today, the threat of tomorrow for this industry beyond this pandemic, if you ask Osborne, is whether customers will ever fully come back.“How are we going to continue to make movie theaters and other forms of entertainment important to people if they’ve found a way to live without it?” he asked.“I’ve heard a lot of people say they wouldn’t come back to the theater even post-pandemic,” Courtade added.The New Parkway says it won’t fully reopen until there is a vaccine readily available.It's hard to predict the ending to this pandemic, but like a movie, there is a moral in the story of businesses like this one: finding a way through, no matter what.“Sometimes you just have to think outside the box,” Courtade said. “Something that might not be obvious or clear right away shouldn’t prevent you from looking at things in a different point of view.” 2886

(KGTV) — The Oceanside Main Street program launched a campaign to support local businesses in May and now that restrictions have been extended, so has the fundraiser.Manager Gumaro Escarcega said the goal is for the community to help the community, so they partnered with Whitlock Ink to create t-shirts and masks to sell that say “Oceanside Strong.” Initially, ,000 was raised and a majority of that was distributed to 13 Oceanside small businesses. Escarcega said with restrictions continuing, they made the decision to keep fundraising, so the products are still available.“As the pandemic continues to impact our communities, we felt that we need to send positive messages out there,” said Escarcega.Stacey Holmes owns Otterlei Coastal and said she’s felt the hit of the pandemic, so she was relieved to receive the help from the campaign.“We were able to use the grant for a little buffer, not knowing what tomorrow is going to bring,” she said.She also said that not only is the money-making a difference, but the community is coming together like never before to help each other. She said store owners are encouraging customers to stop by each other’s shops and restaurants, which has also helped.“I’m trying to pay it back forward to, make sure you go visit such and such store, go visit this restaurant or what have you, so even as a business we’re all supporting each other as well,” she said.Escarcega said right now, Main Street is working on another grant program that should be launched in August. (KGTV) — Every summer, a unique, orange ball can be seen bobbing on the ocean's horizon just off the shore of Ocean Beach.The "David Buoy" was placed off Ocean Beach pier last week, heralding in a summer tradition for the beach town.The buoy is one of several deployed by San Diego lifeguards between North Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach every year for lifeguards to utilize as a workout destination. But Obecians have made the lifeguard tool something unique.RELATED: San Diego speakeasy named among Best Tiki Bars in AmericaLifeguard Sgt. Rick Strobel and James Murphy, a junior lifeguard program director, helped to standardize the use of buoys every summer for workout programs. In Ocean Beach, a group of Obecians asked Strobel about the buoy and started to swim out to it themselves, Strobel told 10News."It became a topic of discussion, 'did you swim the buoy today,'" Strobel said. "They were also big David Bowie fans and the named it 'David Buoy.'"Strobel says the following year, the group gave him a David Bowie sticker and asked him to place it on the buoy before it was set. Mostly lifeguards and junior lifeguards but swim teams water polo teams and triathletes as well," Strobel said. "'David Buoy' has been embraced by the OB community and we as lifeguards really appreciate the support."Strobel says swimmers should always check with a lifeguard before swimming out to any buoys and swim when lifeguards are on duty. And if someone can swim to a buoy in about 10 minutes, " you are an excellent candidate to become a lifeguard.""Know your limitations and know the conditions," Strobel says.Lifeguard tryouts are held every September for the following summer. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) –A man visiting the beach with his family drowned in Oceanside over Labor Day weekend, police say. Oceanside Police say the 31-year-old man from Victorville was on a trip with his family when he went swimming and never returned to shore. According to police, he was later found by some people walking on the beach. After he was located, lifeguards tried to revive him using CPR, but the man died, authorities say. The drowning happened the day after a 73-year-old woman died in Mission Bay. Lifeguards say she appeared not to be swimming in a straight line when they swam out and brought her to shore. Lifeguards performed CPR on the 73-year-old, but she later died.
