President Donald Trump said on Monday he is choosing among five women to nominate to the Supreme Court by the end of the week, and is pushing for the nominee to be confirmed by Election Day.Trump said that he has had conversations with his potential nominees, and could meet with them in person later in the week.“I’d rather see it all take place before the election,” Trump said to reporters. The nominee would replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Friday after a bout with metastatic pancreatic cancer. No matter the nominee, they will face one of the most challenging nomination processes ever seen.Election Day is just 43 days away, which will make for a shorter nomination process than typically seen. Also, the Senate generally takes the weeks leading up to the election off to allow for senators to campaign. Nomination hearings might force senators to stay closer to Washington in the critical days leading to the election. The timing has both frustrated and stymied Democrats. In 2016, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would not consider President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February 2016. That left the Supreme Court down to eight justices for over an entire year. But this time, McConnell says its different with Republicans holding both the Senate and White House.“The American people re-elected our majority in 2016,” McConnell said. “They strengthened it further in 2018 because we pledged to work with President trump on the most critical issues facing our country. The federal judiciary was right at the top of the list. Ironically it was the democratic leader who went out of his way to declare the midterm 2018 elections a referendum on the handle of the Supreme Court."Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer fired back at McConnell."To decide it at this late moment is despicable and wrong and against democracy,” he said.McConnell and Trump could face hurdles from within the party. Republicans hold a 53-47 Senate advantage and a 50-50 tie would be broken by Vice President Mike Pence. If four Republicans choose to vote against a confirmation, the vote likely fails. So far, Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski have said they would wait until after the election to vote for a nominee. There are three other Republican senators, Mitt Romney, Chuck Grassley and Cory Gardner, whose vote is still in question. What these senators decide will likely determine whether Trump will be able to fulfill his wish of getting a nominee through by Election Day. 2568

President Donald Trump lashed out at the FBI late Saturday, describing its failure to follow up on a tip about Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz as "very sad."The FBI has said it failed to act on information about Cruz, who massacred 17 people Wednesday at his former high school in Parkland. The shooting reignited demands for tougher gun laws, with student survivors gathering in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday to criticize Trump and other lawmakers for their inaction.  483

President Donald Trump lashed out at former CIA Director John Brennan on Saturday, claiming he made mistakes during his time at the CIA and calling him a "loudmouth, partisan, political hack.""Has anyone looked at the mistakes that John Brennan made while serving as CIA director? He will go down as easily the WORST in history & since getting out, he has become nothing less than a loudmouth, partisan, political hack who cannot be trusted with the secrets to our country!" Trump wrote on Twitter.Trump did not say what the claimed mistakes were. The White House announced on Wednesday that Trump would revoke Brennan's security clearance. In a statement, Trump said Brennan "has recently leveraged his status as a former high-ranking official with access to highly sensitive information to make a series of unfounded and outrageous allegations -- wild outbursts on the internet and television -- about this Administration." The statement added that the "recent conduct characterized by increasingly frenzied commentary is wholly inconsistent with access to the nation's most closely held secrets." 1111

President Donald Trump retweeted video Monday night that shows a man assaulting a department store clerk in Michigan."Looks what's going on here. Where are the protesters? Was this man arrested?" the president tweeted Monday night. The video was filmed inside a Macy's department store at the Genesee Valley Center Mall near Flint, Michigan. It shows a customer repeatedly hitting an employee, knocking him to the ground and hitting him again while repeatedly using the "N-word."The employee repeatedly tells the suspect that he's sorry throughout the video. On June 15, Flint Township police were called to the store around 5:45 p.m. Police say a store employee was assaulted by a man while a second man filmed it.Police say they're still gathering evidence. But the video spread quickly on social media, including on Twitter and YouTube. Looks what’s going on here. Where are the protesters? Was this man arrested? https://t.co/2E1UbU5vNN— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 23, 2020 Some social media posts allege the employee used a racial slur. Macy's responded with a statement saying, in part, "All the materials from the evening have been reviewed and it is clear the attack was unprovoked.""Macy's and mall management have added additional security to ensure our customers and colleagues can safely enjoy their shopping experience," the company's statement said.Flint Township police are looking for 18-year-old Damire Canell Palmer of Mount Morris, Michigan and 22-year-old Damarquay Jovan Palmer of Flint Township in connection with the case.
