SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer Saturday detailed plans to redevelop the Sports Arena site, officially announcing what developers will tackle the project.According to Faulconer, the plan incorporates a mix of entertainment, housing, and parks."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. "A new arena has always been a priority of mine, and it's the right time."Brookfield Housing and ASM Global were chosen to construct the new arena and thousands of housing units, beating out the other finalist, Toll Brothers Housing.The redevelopment area encompasses roughly 48 acres in the Midway-Pacific Highway Community area. At the press conference, representatives from the Gulls and the Seals spoke, saying they're excited for their teams to play in the new space. Faulconer said the city's goal is to include a new arena to replace Pechanga Arena."The vision for this property is for a world-class arena, park space and amenities," Faulconer said. Leaders said they are now looking toward November when Measure E will be on the ballot. This will determine if the 30-foot maximum height for buildings will remain, or if it will be raised. "Though the news from the city today felt like a punch in the gut, years being married to the sport of soccer has taught me that sometimes you can win on the field and not get the result that matters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In an effort to help San Diego's homeless population, the City of San Diego is proposing a third storage facility the homeless can use to store their belongings. The city organized a town hall in July to gather input for the facility that would be placed on 54th and Lea Street.According to the San Diego Housing Commission, the facilities provide a "safe place for individuals who are experiencing homelessness to keep their belongings as they look for work, attend classes, or meet with a service provider or doctor."One of the centers, located on the 200 block of 16th Street, provides bins for more than 400 homeless individuals. Although the centers provide a service to San Diego's homeless population, some residents have made their opposition clear. Before one of the facilities opened in Sherman Heights, residents voiced their concerns. Neighbors told 10News they worried the facility would increase illegal activity and pose safety concerns in the area. To address concerns, security was placed inside the building as well as patrols sent out into the neighborhood. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Local community activists put together a report that shows what they’re calling the roadmap to racial inequality, basing it on housing data from the 1930s.On Thursday morning, members of the community used red paint to outline zoning lines of the streets of Kensington. The lines were a physical representation of what happened after the Great Depression under the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Ricardo Flores, executive director of Local Initiatives Support Corporation, said, “The very benign use of zoning actually created segregation this day. It says if you can buy 7,000 square feet of land then you can live in this neighborhood.”Flores’ group and other organizations took to the streets to promote the data.“Today, in this day and age, you can ask a high school kid, ‘Where do black and brown people live?’ You ask any adult, ‘Where do black and brown people live? How do they know that? How is it so embedded in us?” said Flores.The activists hope to get support from San Diego officials and a promise in changing the way housing decisions are made.Flores said, “They should look at that parcel of land and allow them to be subdivided, sold, or build on it and rent it out.” 1221
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It sounds like a deal of a lifetime - guarantee a weeklong vacation at a coastal resort every year - for a one-time payment of 0.The county of San Diego is auctioning off nearly 900 timeshares, some in areas like Del Mar, Solana Beach, Carlsbad and downtown for as little as 0. Timeshares can also be transferred to out-of-town hotels, one year at a time. The county expects many to go at the initial offering price. A timeshare is when a person shares in the ownership of a property with others, so that each gets a week of vacation per year. Many of the timeshares were repossessed after the Great Recession, when owners failed to pay at least five years of property tax. "For one week of family bliss in a vacation once a year, this may be the opportunity for as little as 0," said Dan McAllister, the county treasurer-tax collector. "But it is a buyer beware sale."San Diego attorney Dan Eaton said there are many risks to buying a timeshare, and getting out of one can be very difficult."If you think you're just buying a 0 timeshare and you've got access to the timeshare for life without any further cost, that's a huge mistake," Eaton said. Timeshares include annual fees - including maintenance - that can get very expensive."If you stop paying those fees, they can foreclose," Eaton said. "It's an interest in real property."At the Solana Beach Sand Pebbles resort - starting bid 0 - annual fees range from 4 to 2 depending on unit size. And some of the timeshares don't include some parts of the year. Allison Russell, the resort's property manager, said it's vital people do their due diligence before buying.
