(KGTV) - The Fund for the Animals Wildlife Center is at capacity while it cares for a record number of patients.At the center, experts rehabilitate animals they hope to release back into the wild. Most of the predators are kept in the back of the 13 acre property to keep humans from imprinting on them, affecting their ability to survive after release.Staff take extreme care and 'secretly' feed their animals.From January 1to July 1, the center cared for 588 animals. As of Friday, they're currently caring for more than 100, and at capacity.Some of their animals documented in pictures provided to 10News, like an orphaned badger, the first badger the center has had in 20 years. They also have a Great-Horned Owl which was hit by a car."Our patients are one of three things, they're unfortunately orphaned, or ill or injured," director Matt Anderson said.They've seen 35 percent more patients compared to the same time last year, meaning they're caring for 154 more animals."It's what we call baby season, everybody expects it, it's a hectic time, all hands to the deck, the staff are wonderful so we're pushing forward and already have some success stories," Anderson said.The Center is funded through donations and The Humane Society of the US, those dollars critical now more than ever. Another factor behind the boom, higher rain levels meant more food all the way up the food chain."Lots more plant life, and lots more to eat for the prey items that our predators eat," he said that's also what brings predators into our neighborhoods."They're really really good at finding their own food, and so it's best to let them alone in their habitat and enjoy them from a distance," Anderson said.Reminding us how important it is to leave the animals alone so they can survive, go back into that sensitive ecosystem and keep it in balance. 1863

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A sea lion is resting after being rescued from a parking structure in Redwood Monday. According to the Redwood City Fire Department, the sea lion was rescued from a parking structure. The 5-month-old pup, named Santos by the department, made it back to the fire station where he posed for pictures before taking a nap. The center plans to monitor and treat Santos before being released. 595

Researchers say a whale found in the Arctic could be susceptible to COVID-19 since it's "particularly susceptible to infection."Researchers headed up by Martin Nweeia from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, will observe wildlife, mainly the narwhal whale is known for its vast nine-foot tusk."Scientists have a difficult enough time keeping up with the human spread of this virus, so we are eager to monitor an animal that is particularly susceptible to infection," Nweeia said in a press release.Nweeia has studied the narwhal for over 20 years, so he and his team know that animals can get the deadly virus."If this coronavirus were to gain a foothold in wildlife, there could be potential cascading impacts for ecosystems worldwide and the communities that rely on them," Nweeia added.Additionally, Nweeia and his team have already been observing the Ugandan lowland gorilla see its susceptibility because if it ever came into contact with one organism with COVID-19, it could wipe out the entire species, Nweeia said. 1072

Retailers and carriers are preparing for an online holiday shopping surge that could tax shipping networks and lead to delivery delays.FedEx and UPS are ramping up their holiday hiring while expanding their weekend operations and asking retailers to use their shipping network when there is more slack. And stores are pushing shoppers to buy early and are expanding services like curbside pickup to minimize the need for delivery.For the last few years, many retailers had been using their own physical stores, in addition to their distribution centers, to fulfill online orders. But now they are designating some of those stores to handle even higher volumes.
