City workers finally moved in about a month ago, but vacated last weekend after the county served the city with a violation for the asbestos."I think it's taken a horrible toll," said Councilwoman Barbara Bry, who took office after the deal was signed. "I was downtown over the weekend and noticed workers literally wheeling boxes and files and chairs out of 101 Ash."The city insists the building is safe, conducting 235 air quality tests in the last few months, and that it closed the building in an abundance of caution. Bry is now calling for an audit into how the city could do a deal like this. She said she cannot understand why the city would take possession of a property that old "as is.""That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said. Bry has forwarded her request to the city's auditor. Meanwhile, the Mayor's office has authorized the city to hire an outside consultant to determine how this deal came to be. 2005

Carlos Espinoza and his wife Esther are buying a two-bedroom condo in Rancho Penasquitos for 9,000, the full asking price. They put 12 percent down, which they accumulated by increasing contributions to Carlos's 401(K), then borrowing from that fund. "Save as much as you can, even though sometimes you may feel like it's not enough," Carlos said. "The American Dream is alive again."Rich Kushner, a realtor with Burke Real Estate Consultants, said the most important thing an entry level buyer can do is get pre-approved for a loan. That will cause a seller to take an offer more seriously."Everything's negotiable when you write a contract, but you're going to have a stronger offer if you have a pre-approval letter," Kushner said. Realestate.com says inventory of entry level homes is up 21 percent annually in San Diego. Still, challenges remain. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released Thursday the name of a man who was shot and died after reportedly breaking in to a San Carlos home. Hollis Forman, 38, entered the home in the 6300 block of Lake Shore Drive July 16 and began fighting with the 54-year-old homeowner, police said. The homeowner’s wife called 911 as her husband confronted the man. Police said the homeowner’s 20-year-old son grabbed a gun and shot Forman, who ran out the back door and fell into the pool. RELATED: Suspected burglar shot to death, resident injured during San Carlos home break-inWhen officers arrived, they found the homeowner suffering from stab wounds to his upper body and Forman in the pool, dead from a gunshot wound, according to investigators. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Since a movie theater was first added to Horton Plaza in 1985, San Diegans downtown have had cinema options at their fingertips.That is, until the plaza fell on tough times, as business slowed and patrons gained more options for retail and entertainment downtown.The trend has now reached the plaza's Regal movie theater, which closed its doors this year.
